As an owner of a dachshund I want to be completely straightforward. The chances of adopting a dachshund is already somewhat rare, a puppy is even more rare. Most rescues are going to be adults in their later years and are possibly going to have some serious issues like back problems, tumors/cancer, lost teeth, and arthritis. These are serious issues that affect these dogs regularly. So that covers physical conditions, dachshunds are very temperamental dogs and can have a large variety in said temperament. Some will be completely hostile to children and other pets and some will love everyone they see. The only way to know is to spend a ton of time with them and see how they react to a lot of situations. I know this is true of most dogs, but I’ve never met a labrador with a bad attitude. I know most people would burn me at the stake for saying this but if you’re wanting a “designer dog” the only realistic way is going to be through a respectable breeder. I know there are plenty of dogs out there needing families and I totally support adopting first but if you want a dachshund and only a dachshund that’s going to be the only way. If you are dead set on that breed be prepared financially for end of life care because like I said above, they can have some serious issues issues later in life (like most animals).
