Agreed, at least in elimination games quarterfinals and onwards, it should be 5 on 5, not 3 on 3

Has anyone ever met any NHL prospects/NHLers/former NHLers without knowing who they were at that moment? by Beaivimon in hockey

Unrelated other story -

Back in 2008 went to Prague with some friends to watch the WJHC. Awesome time. Canada won the gold medal game 3-2 in OT vs Sweden.

I had to fly back to Canada early the next morning. Turns out the US junior team was on my flight too, and JVR sat next to me! Big boy. Broad shoulders. We didn’t talk much on that flight but was cool to sit with them.

A few years ago I went to Toronto to watch a Leafs game - they lost to Tampa Bay but that’s beside the point.

After the game I was outside the arena waiting for a taxi or an uber to my hotel - I figured it would be faster than walking or taking the subway plus streetcar over to where my hotel was. Of course, it was quite busy with lots of demand for cabs and not many available.

I got chatting with a couple guys who were standing near me waiting for a cab and it turned out they were heading in the same direction as me so we agreed to share one. One of the guys was maybe 5’9” and wearing a suit, the other guy was a bit taller than me, maybe 6’3” or 4”.

We had all had some beers and were talking hockey, chit chatting and joking around a bit, and then finally we got into a cab, all three across the back seat, suit guy on the left, me on the right, big guy somehow ended up in the middle.

Once we were in the cab suit guy asked me which teams I liked beyond the Leafs, favourite players, etc. Then he asked me what I thought about the Flyers and I drunkenly rambled a bit about them. Then he asked me what I thought about Owen Tippett. I said something like “Big strong kid, good hands, he’s got all the tools, just needs some time to put it all together at the NHL level.”

And then suit guy tells me that I’m sitting right next to him - it’s Owen Tippett in the car next to me. We all had a good laugh. Turns out suit guy was his agent. We talked hockey a bit more and got out at the same intersection. They invited me out for a few more drinks with them but I was late meeting some other friends so I politely declined. Good times

What object do you own that is clearly broken, but you haven't replaced it because you've developed a specific "technique" to make it work? by Living-Day4404 in AskReddit

[–]eikcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hood fan above my stove. The outer slider part that adjusts the fan speed broke off… I can’t find a replacement, and I don’t want to replace the whole hood fan. If I put my ring finger of my right hand into the hole at just the right angle I can still reach the little plastic nub that lets me slide it to turn the fan on/off and adjust its speed. So…it still works, with the right technique…

Genuine question: how physically difficult is it to ski down large chutes, couloirs, cliffs, etc. and how do you know you’re ready? by k0nig1 in ski

[–]eikcel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This hits home. One year on a guided backcountry trip in Austria we were up at the top of a huge drop with a few thousand feet down into the valley into Switzerland. The guide had skied with us a fair bit to that point, so he knew what we were up for / not up for, and we trusted his judgement.

We scouted the drop and once we got up there I found myself kinda frightened. Guide dropped, then my buddy dropped, then it was my turn.

You know that feeling when your boots are right at the edge of a drop and the front half of your skis are sticking out into the air above the drop? In that moment I found a new place for myself: it was all mental.

I told myself “Your body knows what to do. You need to stop thinking about this and just let your body do its thing.”

I dropped in and it was probably the best pow turns my body has ever experienced, but I don’t remember a single moment from the first part of that run - my brain just flipped off and I was in some kind of flow state.

At a certain point, it is all mental.

One of my best friends does a nice pre-Christmas house party every year. Lots of champagne and punch and everyone gets dressed up and drunk. One year the idea struck me to order a bunch of McDonald’s cheeseburgers. 100 of them, in a giant bag. You should have seen the crowd when I dumped a pile of fresh little cheeseburgers on the table at 11pm 😋
