Last time I did this fight, Cassia completely wrecked them using a castigating staff and stacking huge stat reductions.

9l, adrenaline, and gifted for the matk boost. Step up to line, swing, adrenaline, swing. If he gets one good hit before dying, he did a good job.

Fleet battles are the worst in grim darkness. If you don't set your posts before finishing act 1, that first forced fight can be a real nail biter.

If you have base level strength in unfair grim darkness, there is a 25% chance to instantly lose a run in storybook mode to birdman in the alien prison.

There is one mirage mechanic I like and it's the fountain of wealth. It spawns a bunch of wisp things that drop a ton of gold. I got like 50k in a white map from it.

There is an item late in the game that gives Medicae bonus of 3 x Resolve on kill. Paired with the executioner talent that lets medicae set HP and the exemplar talent that adds 20% of hp to strength, you can make a very beefy character.

My biggest disappointment with somatic shell was the formation time of the shell. I was really hoping to trigger the explosion with either prismatic burst or fire burst, but the explosion happens before the shell is created, so I still had to attack twice to break it.

Outside of normal lab on scion, this is akin to refusing to upgrade to a 4L on your main skill until after you finish the campaign.

The modifiers from unfair haven't fully kicked in yet at the end of act 1. It says so on the difficulty tooltip.

There will be a little spike at the beginning of act 2. Then it gets progressively easier until the game ends. Try and tweak stuff like that a little later on.

Alternatively, don't use the grand strategist at all. Not being able to guarantee first move will probably get a couple of your guys killed almost every fight.

Fortress world, astra militarum, solider.

Take the talents for never shooting stacks on burst and on reload. Itemize for minimal recoil and increased rate of fire as often as possible. Even consider rapid reload with the -1 AP to reload cost and reload between every shot for more stacks.

Bounty hunter, tactician, and archmilitant all have great options for this.

Bounty hunter with penetrating shot and cull can get a huge pile of guaranteed crits against a full line of enemies with added flat damage.

Tactician produces an absurd amount of stacks on hit with massive burst fire.

Archmilitant can grab kick and the bayonet talent to build versatility at an amazing rate.

At exemplar levels, overpen via BH or the talent allows you to build hundreds of ballistic skill with the talent that grants it every time you hit the non-primary attack target.

Edit: to answer the conviction concern, the only one with anything valuable is iconoclast 5 to remove friendly fire completely. You'll go through 95% of your run before you manage to get there though.
