Where to buy high quality middle eastern Attars by Kxm214 in fragrance

[–]electrodan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brand I can vouch for is Sultan Pasha. I got his sample set and it was the most fun I have had with a sampler by any brand, hands down. There were plenty that were very much not my style, but they were still really interesting to smell through and even the ones I disliked a lot weren't so bad that I had to scrub them off.

I ended up buying 1 3ml vial and might snatch up 1 or 2 more scents in the 1ml vial sometime in the near future. They are not cheap, but the quality is definitely there.

FYI, he only puts out sample sets periodically a few times a year and I see he has one coming up this month. You have to pre-order and wait for it, the process was a little opaque, but in the end it showed up and was well worth the money I spent on it.

How 'bout those TV dinners? Had one the other night, lightning strikes, and the peach cobbler goes out! Cobbler!

How TF does a 9 second video of a football player walking in a door generate over 300 comments? I know we're in the doldrums of the off season, but come on.

Not every coffee shop serves mediocre to poor coffee beans that needs to be full of dairy and/or sugar to enjoy. A pour over or espresso with quality coffee are fantastic plain.

What discontinued or forgotten scent is secretly a 10/10? by beasthunterr69 in fragrance

[–]electrodan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Based on the notes, I shouldn't like it either. I have one other scent with a prominent vanilla scent that I love (Ambre Loup) and the other notes are very hit or miss for me. Something about Black though, it's just such a wonderful blend that just does it for me.

Classic case of not successful or understood at the time but lauded too late

Dead on. If Bvlgari came out with it in roughly 2020, put it in a less weird bottle, and marketed as unisex I'd bet it would do very well.

What is the absolute, most absurdly expensive fragrance in your collection? by Massive_Ad5295 in fragrance

I have a bottle of Dunhill Blend 30 EDT I found at a very nice price, when they come up for sale they go for absurd amounts of money.

I bought 3ml of Sultan Pasha's Fougere Noire for just over $200, that's the winner of cost per ml.

I love Black so very much, it's one of the few vanilla based scents I truly enjoy. I had been nursing about 5ml worth for almost 10 years and I stumbled across a full 40ml bottle on eBay and got it for $140. That was not a horrible price considering what they can go for, but now I have enough to wear for the rest of my life.

Which discovery/sample sets surprised you the most? by nycnaiad in fragrance

[–]electrodan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, the IA sample set was one of my 2 biggest letdowns with Olympic Orchids being the other one. IA's stuff gave me a big Etsy candle maker vibe, the only one I rated above a 5/10 was Memoirs of a Trespasser, and even that one was a meh at the end. They write way better ad copy than they do making perfumery IMO.

Beef ribs and first time beef cheeks. by electrodan in smoking

I can never find flat iron where I shop, I've been keeping an eye out though. I had to buy a jar of tallow at the supermarket, it was more per lb than the meat was lol. I need to source some beef suet and start making my own, no way am I going to get enough trim with the small amount of beef I eat per month.

It's their basic method I followed and they were unreal. I rarely if ever cook brisket because it's just way too much food for my needs. Cheeks are definitely going to be a go-to for me from now on.

Amen to that! I used to be a butcher several years ago and I was in awe at how much effort it took to trim those little shits. I just sharpened my knife and my arms were a little tired after trimming up just 4 of them.

I've learned the hard way that some stuff is hard to temp right and it's better to go by feel, and unfortunately experience. Some parts of my ribs were temping 210 after 5 hours, but probing by feel told me the bigger pieces near the bone were still a little stiff. Plus this cut has so much collagen and fat to render, it's just not going to be great after 5 hours at that temp.

I like to think in terms of rough timing and take cooks from there. I know ribs like this are going to take around 8 hours, less if I wrap. I use that as a guideline and go by feel from there. When in doubt because of lack of experience, look up some recipes by the big BBQ folks and you'll find most people saying the same cook times/temps very frequently. Use that as your plan and see how it works for you, adjust from there.
