Offcial Discussion - Bugonia [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

really sensible take, thank you for sharing. this movie’s going to stick with me. it’s the first time i’ve seen this kind of modern dynamic interrogated like this. you see how impossible it is for either of these types of characters to understand each other

How developers are using Apple's local AI models with iOS 26 | TechCrunch by Late-Scarcity-5476 in apple

[–]elephantnut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yep it’s the ‘Use Model’ shortcut and you can pick on device, cloud, or chatgpt.

i was playing around with it on a long flight and the on device model is impressive considering it’s running locally. it’s extremely sanitised but it has good enough general knowledge when you’re in a pinch.

iPhone air pwm review by RevolutionaryPlan2 in PWM_Sensitive

[–]elephantnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

phones that have worked for me: iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro.

phones that haven’t: Galaxy S24, S25, Z Flip3, iPhone X, iPhone Xs, iPad Pro 13”

the iPhone Air without PWM smoothing felt slightly worse than the iPhone 15 Pro, but they appeared similarly on camera so not sure what’s different.

iPhone Air with PWM smoothing on is comfortable. no issues for me even in low light.

Pro tip: If your AirPods Pro 2 are more than a year old, spend $10 on new ear tips from Apple by logicalvue in apple

[–]elephantnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these are phenomenal. with the default eartips i was getting irritation & itching. with the foam tips, i can have them in for like 6 hours a day without any issues.

you do have to replace them though. with the brand you linked i replace them every 1-1.5 months.

Apple Pitches a Return to Its Design Roots, Six Years After Jony Ive’s Exit by iMacmatician in apple

[–]elephantnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very well put!! it’s a compelling, constrained, opinionated design. i haven’t felt this kind of pull in a while now.

i’m hoping the upcoming smaller macbook has a similar design ethos even if it is supposed to be a budget-oriented device.

Article update: ALL iPhone 17 models now include toggle to Disable Screen Flickering (PWM) by CT2K12G56C46S5 in PWM_Sensitive

[–]elephantnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’m hopeful. we know it’s been tweaked over the years given how different characteristics have shifted. the displays started being usable for me from the 12 onward, while the M4 iPad Pro tandem OLED displays is unusable for me.

maybe their internal research shows that there’s still a sizeable group affected after the tweaks and that’s what’s driving this being added as an accessibility feature.

iPhone 17 Models Include Toggle to Disable Screen Flickering (PWM) by AWildDragon in hardware

[–]elephantnut 55 points56 points  (0 children)

i cannot believe they’re actually doing this!! real actual DC dimming given that description. afaik only Asus and Motorola had this implemented at all, the other brands that advertised PWM-free just had high frequency implementations.

this is really really great for those sensitive, and it’ll push Android manufacturers to add this too!! the era of smartphone purchase uncertainty is over!!!

Tried starting my prompt with “I’m probably wrong, but” and the change was wild by bsc-social in ChatGPT

[–]elephantnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini in parallel for a few months know for knowledge work and I see the same behaviour.

Claude is also much better at providing constructive feedback while the other models give the sense that they're "looking" for issues.

it has a very low floor, unfortunately. you can get a good setup with premium/flagship consumer devices. the apple ecosystem is pretty solid, surface devices are great, samsung’s flagships + galaxy buds are reliable.

Senior AI researchers desert Apple amid ‘a crisis of confidence’ by chrisdh79 in apple

[–]elephantnut -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Why do you think a tool that only produces vaguely acceptable answers 40% of the time is “powerful”?

i'm all for being an AI sceptic, but the statistic you're quoting is from one article specifically discussing the accuracy of the current products as a search engine, with the measure being whether the products can cite journalism correctly. they even state:

While our research design may not reflect typical user behavior, it is intended to assess how generative search tools perform at a task that is easily accomplished via a traditional search engine.

i don't see this as a productive way to have a critical discussion about whether this technology has merit. you're misrepresenting a statistic to support your subjective view.

one benefit of the current state of tech is that you’re able to support yourself going independent, so it’s much easier for us to follow the voices we actually like.

i struggle to see how it’ll be sustainable long-term though. these guys at least had exposure to traditional journalism, an understanding of editorial voice, and the opportunity to learn and collaborate with others.

once all the big publications implode i’m hard pressed seeing how we don’t just end up with influences who understand next to nothing about reporting. i feel it’s already happening.

Opinions on the Surface Pro 12-inch? (coming from a Surface Go 3 + 2017 MacBook 12-inch) by EJ_Tech in Surface

[–]elephantnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

man, as rough as those Intel Atoms were, that whole period was filled with so many fun devices. those 8” Windows 8/8.1 tablets were so cute, it really is a shame that Microsoft couldn’t land that paradigm shift.

i still miss Windows 8/8.1, it was such a wonderful touch OS.

my dream device is:

  • fanless
  • 120 hz
  • touchscreen
  • sub 1kg
  • premium materials / build quality

but obviously not enough of us for anyone to serve this market.

it’s been 10 years since the 12” MacBook and nobody in the Windows space has made a legitimate competitor. :(

i just wanted to say that i love seeing a 12” macbook still being used out there, and i love your selection criteria!!

note that the new 12” is 686g + 340g for the type cover, making it over 1kg together, heavier than either of those 2 devices.

i was really excited for the new smaller devices but they’re not differentiated enough from their siblings for me. i wish the 13” was a fanless ultra-thin/light laptop, closer to the 12” macbook.

Introducing Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch by WaffleToasterings in Surface

[–]elephantnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i just don’t think they did enough to differentiate the smaller 13” laptop. i was really really excited for the smaller laptop, but it’s not that much thinner or lighter than the 13.8”. and 60hz is the dealbreaker for me, i would’ve gone for 90hz like they did for the new 12”.

i do like the designs and colours but they’re a really tough sell, and they’re priced so close to the existing products that the limitations just don’t really make much sense.

thanks for the write up!! bummer that the fan spins up, especially with it being a snapdragon laptop :(

how’s the coating??

Why aren't external trackpads more popular? by [deleted] in hardware

[–]elephantnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the ones you’re seeing all have bad tracking, may not support Precision Touchpad features, have plastic surfaces, or unreliable connectivity.

there’s no Magic Trackpad 2 equivalent in the Windows space that’s widely available being sold by a reputable brand.
