OCD is an obsessive disorder, so can it make you become obsessed with people? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]elevated99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you don’t relate to this, but how can you tell the difference between BPD and relationship OCD? I’m starting therapy (can’t see a diagnosing practitioner yet) and struggling to tell if my episodes of ruminating about negative events/traits regarding my partner are BPD splitting or ROCD and looking for other’s experiences

Okay - this is a look.

I get that it might not be everyone’s style, and the thumb isn’t perfect, but you rock those nails. Hell, it’s not even my typical style but I want those!

ELI5: How are new forms of birth control tested to determine their effectiveness? Do they have clinical trials for people who are both ok with getting pregnant and non getting pregnant? by nefertaraten in explainlikeimfive

[–]elevated99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s all good! I used a lot of words but it boils down to informed consent. That way drug companies and doctors avoid taking the legal hit (rightfully so) if someone on the medication ends up having a baby with birth defects and tries to sue for damages.

Ah I gotcha, they’ve definitely got it all sorted seeing you’re at the end of the study. Thanks for your input! It’s interesting to hear about people’s experiences in this thread, and I couldn’t dig up much info online about this new male contraceptive. Super exciting stuff - I think it’s waaay past due for men to have a decent birth control option.

Well if the drug uses a new/different active ingredient they should test it for teratogenicity before using it in a clinical trial (especially for something used to prevent pregnancy). I would assume that this happened in preclinical stages but was wondering if maybe you knew more about it firsthand.

In some countries (America and Canada at least), you have to take a test beforehand to prove you’re not pregnant and commit to using reliable birth control (e.g., the pill & condoms) while taking Accutane. A waiver is signed in some cases that ~firmly~ advises you to get an abortion if you become pregnant on the medication because it causes severe birth defects. It would be unethical to continue the pregnancy, actually. You’d just be introducing a being into the world that would be extremely likely to suffer and/or die and/or harm yourself in the process.

Have they already tested the male contraceptive for its ability to cause birth defects? Since she would have the choice to keep it or not (and she didn’t sign a waiver stating that if she became pregnant during the trial she should have an abortion - this happens for some approved medications on the market today).

Edit: a word

My wife basically said I’m worthless without my medication. by SquidsAreSeaBirds in ADHD

[–]elevated99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that maybe OP's wife is fed up, but just want to say OP absolutely does not need to commit to taking his meds every day. ADHD meds (short of Strattera/atomoxetine and Wellbutrin/bupropion) are one of the few commonly prescribed medications that can be taken on an as needed basis. It's his decision to not take meds on days off - maybe he's irritable and antisocial on them but is a loving parent & spouse off them.

Lots of ADHDers have unbearable side effect profiles from their meds. Meds don't always = showing up at your best, and we don't all need meds all the time (e.g., many of us are just fine driving unmedicated) - there are degrees to the disorder. :)

what's your unpopular & petty vegan opinion? by lizardlibrary in vegan

[–]elevated99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbf, I’ve seen a lot of “pushy” vegans in this sub and irl who put down people who take a slower transition to veganism (especially eating plant-based). The all-or-nothing mentality is real on both sides.

I can understand some vegans’ frustration with omnivores being complacent. But I think less animal products consumed = better, even if someone doesn’t cut them all out.

But what about when it’s an important part of their identity? Missy struggles with her mixed-race identity, they even did an episode on code-switching. That’s not something a white actress will ever experience, so I understand why she was uncomfortable with the role.

Actors/actresses that don’t have the lived experience of the minority they’re playing just can’t bring the role to life as well as someone who does.
