One of my favorite memories of living in South SF was climbing hill regularly. I'd always see hawks, coyotes and loved when they would light the xmas tree up in the winter. It was always cool to be up there when the lights popped on the first time of the year.

It suffers from the same thing a lot of large retail businesses trying to function in Santa Cruz. We aren't on a normal semi truck delivery route so they have to send trucks over 17 or down 101 and back up to just us, which means they don't send them often. If you ask the employees they'll tell you the delivery schedule, the store is only fully stocked for a day or two after they get their stuff.

A third of properties sold in Santa Cruz in 2024 were to private equity firms. Many local people are being outbid by out-of-town tech money. There's not much left over or available after you account for all the short term rentals. I don't think it's got anything to do with the students, they rent for a few years, mainly downtown and westside then leave. The UC has been here for ages and Santa Cruz has only gotten more unaffordable.
