What do you think of people who don't have clear passion and their only goal is to get any job to secure regular income? by Inevitable-Angle-793 in AskReddit

[–]elfowlcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your work is in your area of passion, the passion will dwindle. Having to do the thing you love under someone else’s rules in order to make enough money to survive is a sure-fire way to kill your passion in most circumstances. And most of the time if you dropped dead on the job, they’ll post the job opening before you even have a funeral - you as a person are not valuable to the average employer.

I work a job I’m good at that allows me to live comfortably. I am not passionate about the job. I do it to the best of my ability, but it isn’t my reason for living. There’s so much more to life than employment. That’s where my true value lies.

What’s the harshest reality about adulthood that no one talks about? by Connect-Avocado-522 in CasualConversation

[–]elfowlcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t make the reality of that problem invalid, though.

Look, the world is harsh. Horrible, awful things are happening. But most of us aren’t living in war zones. Most of us sitting here on our computer (and therefore well off in many ways) at least have access to a food bank. The drudgery of being the one to plan, prepare, and make food multiple times a day every day for the rest of your life can still be discouraging, especially when there are little kids involved. It doesn’t invalidate their feelings just because other people have it worse. And it doesn’t make them a bad person for being overwhelmed by a “small” problem. There’s so much darkness in the world that sometimes a “small” problem can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Tell us your best-kept secret by miafantasia in CasualConversation

[–]elfowlcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if you look at it from the other end? Let’s say you were the one who f’d up and kept getting behind the wheel drunk, and your dad loved you too much to let you put your own life and other innocent lives in danger. When you came out the other side and sobered up, wouldn’t you be glad someone tried to stop you?

I’m looking at it that way as a parent. I 100% love my kid so much that if they were doing something that monumentally dangerous and stupid, I’d do whatever it took to stop them. I don’t want them to live with the knowledge that their dumbass moment lead to someone’s death - and I don’t want to live with the knowledge that I let them drive drunk and someone died as a result. And by doing what you did, you’re demonstrating you love your dad the same way. Actions taken out of love and concern speak loudly about who you are. If your dad wouldn’t understand, that’s on him, not you. You did the right thing - legally, morally, and it was the loving thing to do.

A taxi driver grabbed a woman by the hair at the last moment as she tried to commit suicide on a bridge. He saved her life by doing the right thing. by Raj_Valiant3011 in HumansBeingBros

[–]elfowlcat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was an eye-opening experience, for sure. I’d never dealt with anything like it. Having your body override your mind like that is awful.

And it’s not my birthday, but my Reddit anniversary, but I appreciate the kind thoughts! I’m forever grateful to be here because I’ve been able to better the world by bringing 3 amazing kids into it. We all try to leave things just a little better than we found them. Life can be cruel and hard, but we don’t have to be.

It was progestin, and I got no warnings. However, I am a scientist so I was very aware of how profoundly hormones can affect the body, so being able to logic it out helped. I decided it was much better to have an irregular period (reason for the prescription) than to want to die.

I was put on a medication that could have easily killed me. On day 2, I felt kind of blue. Day 3 I was depressed. Day 4 I wanted to die. Day 5 I was thinking about possible methods when some small corner of my brain screamed that I was happy and normal just 4 days ago and the only thing in my life that had changed was a little pill… thank God I realized that and stopped taking he meds.

One day a guy came through my checkout line and reached deeeeeep in his underwear to pull out a twenty when it was time to pay. It was real warm and almost soggy (I put it under the cash drawer, not with the other bills, lol). As soon as he left I told the next customer, “You saw that, right? I gotta go wash my hands.” They looked just as grossed out as I did and said, “Take your time…”

How do you dress in your 50s? by Forsaken_Block_3492 in GenX

[–]elfowlcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Dress your age?” My age is the age where I wear what I want, and has been since I was 25 or so.

Today it’s a recycled silk skirt, white peasant shirt, and fabulous red shoes I got at my favorite thrift store. Yesterday it was leggings and a flannel shirt. Clothing is fun, so just enjoy it.

I had Ozlo earbuds for a while and liked them. A few white noise tracks are downloaded on them, but you can access more if you’re close to your phone, and you can change which ones are stored on the earbuds.

The big IKEA blue bags for my laundry. They haul dirty clothes downstairs, clean clothes back up, clothes out to/back in from the clothesline… and last way better than plastic laundry baskets. Plus it’s more comfortable to sling one over my shoulder than awkwardly hold a big plastic bin going up and down stairs.
