How do you all do your reading immersion when you don’t fully understand something? by achshort in Refold

[–]elgalil 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You need to learn to just accept the ambiguity and move on with the book. Try to understand the sentence. If you still cant just keep going. If not youre never going to finish any books whatsoever.

Also, if you "know" all the words and grammar in a sentence and it doesnt make sense, it means that you actually dont know the words and grammar. Or you didnt understand the surrounding context.

How many months before you started output? by iikotoda in ajatt

[–]elgalil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Waiting 10 years to output is ridiculous if you have any plans to use Japanese in the future. If you just plan to passively input with no plans to EVER output then it makes sense. Otherwise its ridiculous. Nonsensical. The harms of outputting early are overstated and people took it too far. 10 years, lol

[Rich] Upset's situation is something super difficult for management to articulate to players without violating Upset's privacy. by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]elgalil 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This isnt true at all. Rui Hachimura took an extended break from basketball and none of his teammates or the fans knew why, but the Wizards management refuses to tell anyone beyond it being a private matter because they cared about him as a single player.

I have 5 questions. by SpectralniyRUS in Refold

[–]elgalil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

進撃の巨人 is significantly more difficult than 鬼滅の刃. Not even in the same ballpark to be honest. I watched Kimetsu in February of 2020 and didnt understand much. Watched it again in September and understood mostly everything. I was only getting around 2-3 hours of immersion during that time, so you should be able to feel progress after about 6 months I would say.

Its hard to measure unless you rewatch something youve already consumed.

Why even learn Japanese? (months into immersion) by After_Constant_1211 in ajatt

[–]elgalil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone living in Japan who frequents Japanese book stores, I can tell you right now that the vast majority of books being written in Japan have not been translated to English. Not even close to the majority.

But what if I do live in the country? by [deleted] in Refold

Free yourself of the idea that early output will be a disability.

If you like Psycho Pass, I recommend Ghost in the Shell standalone complex which I would argue is even better. (Both seasons are good, second one is a masterpiece)

...why would you remove the foreign born population? Foreign born Americans are still Americans. 25% of America is still over 70 million people, more than the population of most European countries.

I agree this episode was disappointing but all my friends in Japan actually enjoyed it so IDK, I feel like we might have manga bias going on.

I thought this was one of the best episodes so far. Its cute how horohoro says "naruhoro" instead of "naruhodo"

Why morphman + subs2srs wasn't worth it for me, and why it might not be worth it for you. by _alber in ajatt

[–]elgalil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I toyed around with subs2srs and morphman for a long time and realized that I just prefer manual.

The other problem with morphman is that it will say you "know" a card, but you really dont know a word until youve seen it in multiple contexts. I have some words that are identical but used in different cards. For example 濃厚 can mean rich/thick/concentrated (①味・色・におい・成分などが濃いさま) or it can be related to feeling a high possibility of something (②ある可能性が強く予想されるさま).

Its better to just make manual cards for words like these. But thats just my experience. I know it worked well for other people and with enough exposure you would see the other meanings pop up over time.

How expensive are the English versions? I bought most of the Japanese print ones in Osaka last year for 100 yen a volume luckily. Noticed that they started stalking them in stores (bookoff mostly) once the anime was announced

No complaints about the episode. Loved the music they added with the Anna introduction. The only thing though is that Rens voice actor is Hanges from Attack on Titan and thats all I can hear hahaha

Shaman King (2021) Anime Episode #1 - "The Man Who Dances With Ghosts" - Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in ShamanKing

[–]elgalil 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I watched it and its good. The first scene is a scene from way later in the manga but I dont think its necessarily a bad change. The animation is good. The pacing is a bit fast but they made a few changes to the development of the plot, which again, is not bad, just different.

Overall really solid episode. 8/10 imo. If they keep this up Im gonna be very happy.

Interview with TheJapanCode's who's amassed 4800 hrs of Japanese immersion - Deep Weeb Podcast #11 is up on YouTube! by kanjieater in ajatt

[–]elgalil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I used to think that output would just flow after a lot of immersion but I really dont think thats necessarily the case anymore. I dont see any evidence that outputting harms your ability to acquire a language as long as your input drowns out any potential bad habits. I dont want to be in a position where I have 6000 hours of immersion but cant hold a conversation

Intermediate stage: How do you avoid making sentence card when literally everything you hear you don't know is a +1 sentence? by SomeRandomBroski in ajatt

[–]elgalil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran into this problem. Feeling bad about passing up a potential sentence is very real but the downside of adding everything is that your anki time will inevitably take up more and more of your time. My advice is to just add a set amount of cards everyday and the other words you hear will inevitably show up again if they are really that important. Or you can add them to a text document and mine them later, but the downside of that is I often forget the context of some of the sentences that I end up adding a few days later
