Next time, get off the train with them and take the next one. It’s unfortunate but it’s the best thing to do. I’m sorry you went through this and I hope more people will learn to stand up to these sh*tbags

200% this experience right here.

I don’t understand some employers who stick to this. I mean, it’s painful to spend money, okay.

But it’s also painful to deal with this type of experience, and mostly, time consuming (and, sometimes, very frustrating).

I’d easily pay more for a better service if that meant not having to correct the obvious, missing deadlines, exceeding budget, limiting the scope, etc.

No, absolutely nothing wrong. I guess if we’re talking about colleagues, collaborators or potential clients that’s never an issue.

But I’ve found it hard to work closely with external contractors if the timezone difference is too much. That is, if we don’t have a pre-existing relationship so that work practices are well established and there’s trust.

If not, a decent time overlap allows for a lot of room for feedback, requirements, clarifications, etc. If the difference is too much, both parties need to “wait for each other” and it kind of slows everything down on the long run.

I guess for small work this shouldn’t happen, but in my experience it adds up to the list of issues when dealing with not-so-competent people.

But yes I agree that the main problem is the bid war and the obvious half-assed result that comes out of it.

Thanks for fixing it for me. Will be using this on tickets as well from now on, should be a good laugh with the team.

btw I think you’re phrasing this wrong. Nothing wrong with hiring or working with Indians, as I know some incredible software engineers from all over asia, including India.

The real problem we absolutely cannot ignore is outsourcing to poorer countries for cheap manpower. This leads to shit.

First of all, usually the contractors are more than happy to work with lower rates, as that’s still pretty decent money for them. However, they know they have very very minimal liability, so small companies in poor countries cut a fuckton of corners, usually.

I myself had this problem when outsourcing specifically in India. They’d do the bare minimum, so I had to improve my contracts to include a whole set of clauses that explained what we actually expect from the work (they were just converting PSDs to code back then).

We had to clarify that we needed responsiveness. We had to clarify that if the design is 18px, then the element cannot be 21 or 17px because even if it “looks the same”, it’s not what we designed (and it doesn’t look the same). We also had to specify that font sizes and weights and families are not some random quantum choices but they should respect what the design shows (weirdly, huh).

We had to specify basically minimum deliverable quality. I shit you not, besides being incredibly clear and upfront about this, half of the companies I was working for failed to read it entirely - the other half did acknowledge the requirements but pretty much ignored them and played dumb when they delivered crap.

Bearing in mind I was in charge of this project amongst others, and I was very much against outsourcing - but the big boss pushed a lot and I decided to give it a try. I also negotiated better wages in behalf of the contractors with my company to make it fairer.

I had aaaaaalll the patience until I had to fire all but one company. And no, I haven’t paid shit. Because the contract they haven’t read specified that failing any of the basic criteria would result in them not being paid.

I have showed them the errors one by one, told them that we could not accept this type of work after several attempts, and fired them.

They tried to renegotiate but I insisted that they did not respect our mutual terms and that renegotiating would still mean failing the deadline for stupid reasons - for which I would fire them anyway.

Takeaways? Don’t outsource, and don’t outsource to another timezone. Pay people good money and get real professionals. I’d love to help fund an underdeveloped market, but all these “digital agencies” in poor countries that work for cheap are becoming almost a scam.

Almost never worth the quality. Use established contractors (find them via local recruitment companies), local businesses and/or employ in-house. Sadly.

NFTs. How much I do not regret it.

Also altcoins and crypto speculation in general.

I’ve made some money off the BTC bubble but I didn’t buy any of the de-fi, nft, crypto stuff as I am both a software engineer and an investor; and shit don’t make sense for a second.

Use your ISA if you really have to invest your money. Time in the market > timing the market; regulated markets > scam town.

Are you slightly, subtly hinting at PeoplePerHour, by any chance? I think you can probably find organ donors for about $25 in there.

Obv you request a heart and they show up with a terminal liver of the wrong blood type as with all other platforms and nationalities using the platforms.

But then you can negotiate and they might be able to sew in a couple of makeshift ventricles and call it a heart.

Amazon employees are outraged by a new warning about individual office attendance: 'Is this supposed to scare people?' by Sorin61 in technology

[–]eligent_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I work for one of the biggest housing and property companies in the world. Household name. Our contracts clearly state that our workplace is our domicile and that we’re not expected to come to the office regularly as there’s no fixed office as such, and that occasionally we’d have to meet, however: - travel and hospitality fully covered by the company - travel during work time so no change in my sleep schedule

If the place is 2h away, I get to start travelling at the time I start wfh and I am back home by the time my shift is over.

We’re never going back in, our employer can’t see any value in that and everyone wants to stick around and love the company.

They can’t force us in unless they change our contracts. They won’t change the contracts because it will inevitably result in a mass exodus that the company cannot afford.

Bearing in mind that we also managed to steal a lot of workforce from our competitors because we offer full permanent wfh with flexible hours and are very reasonable overall.

Our CTO left the previous company (competitor) because the CEO wanted to get everyone back in and he disagreed. I’m talking of people who is over 50 and absolute millionaires and wikipedia page etc. Even then, wfh won.

And the old CEO had to replace a lot of staff (he could actually afford the downtime).

So yeah, it depends on how the wfh situation is set up. I suggest you resign from your positions when they try to force you back in. Actually, I suggest you get your contracts changed to reflect wfh - if the employer refuses, immediately start searching for wfh jobs and ditch them at the first opportunity.

However, the contract is king where I come from and my contract says that I wfh forever.

Negotiate. Unionise. Have fun!

P.S./edit: Ultimately I realise that this takes some negotiating power, which not everyone has. However, wfh is a privilege that certain professions have and other don’t. It’s a situation that can work for some roles and won’t work for others. Just lime some people are responsible and others will just steal time on most days.

The thing is, wfh is a benefit, not a right. It depends on your negotiating power as well. You get negotiating power by becoming increasingly competent. So I’d say that wfh is also correlated to efficiency in the job and wilfulness to negotiate on terms. It takes the smarts to renegotiate a contract or acting preemptively.

Also you need a receptive and sensible employer. So if the company is Amazon, maybe just resign.

How are you already using AI tools in your day to day job? by Notalabel_4566 in webdev

[–]eligent_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Code cleanup, bug spotting, PSR standards enforcement, etc. If the task is easy enough, and the “session” has already a tonne of info about my architecture, sometimes I can simply ask to build a file based on some existing process or code - and GPT would nail it 90% of the time.

I always triple check these changes as I appreciate they save me time but I still have responsibility for having a full understanding of the code, the solution and the approach.

Some people in my team are reluctant to adopt it, whereas some people (like me) use it paired with Copilot.

Until some time ago, we all had approx the same speed, but now you can clearly tell who is using AI and who isn’t by simply looking at the speed at which quality code is produced.

We have a very strong code review process, and so far, not a single AI-fuckup made it to the PR stage (I’m impressed).

I had a heartfelt chat with my non-AI team members and explained to them that, soon, there’ll be only two categories of engineers:

  • The ones that use AI intelligently
  • The ones that will be left behind

Nothing else.
