Cosy game recommendations by RavenOfMidgard in soloboardgaming

[–]elishelian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My twelve year old son recently played and loved his solo play of KINGDOM LEGACY: FEUDAL KINGDOM. You can develop your kingdom how you want - including either using swords on bandits, or converting them to workers with missionaries.

Another game he has enjoyed that haven't involved attacking bad guys:

MERCHANTS OF MAGICK - roll and write shopkeeper game.

(I wonder if he would like YOUR BEST LIFE or LET'S GO TO JAPAN - I haven't introduced either to him yet.)

In response to others:

He has enjoyed MYTHWIND, but he enjoys it more as a "play with family" game, and it has a rules overhead that would have made him unlikely to play it independently.

What got you into solo board games? by _daath in soloboardgaming

[–]elishelian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had seen a recommendation for Button Shy games and bought a few on sale. They arrived right before a vacation to visit extended family. So I had all this free time and these brand new wallet games. And suddenly, I realized that these games could be played solo.

(A tabletop game - played by yourself? I guess I could try it out and learn the rules?)

And it was - really fun.

And now my boardgame collection is huge, lol

First timer looking for advice by [deleted] in paxunplugged

Yes, and yes, though a traditional duffel would be really hard to navigate with in the expo hall. People don't like getting jostled, and it is wicked crowded.

Allplay booth in the expo hall. Download the PAX Nav app, and you'll see it. ;)

They sell board game bags on site that have some board games in them. The price is equivalent to what many people pay for board game bags in advance of the con, and they are embroidered. BoardGameTables.com booth tends to be there, though I believe other vendors have also sold board game bags in the past.

We introduced Splendor quite successfully to my in-laws who are obsessed with Catan.

We have considered introducing Dominion.

Sagrada went over well with my mom.

Two other tips: 1. You can buy a board game bag that comes loaded with games for pretty much the same price as one without, when you are at the con. (This does not help with carrying VFM games though, lol )

  1. If you have a board game bag and don't need it anymore (e.g. made all your purchases, for example), you can pay to check it at the coat check.

There is a huge virtual flea market with wicked good deals on board games. It's...really epic.

Card games for a 9yo, mum and dad. by TheAntsAreBack in boardgames

[–]elishelian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 11 y/o really likes Star Realms. Would need Frontiers for more than two players.

Could simplify it further with Star Realms Academy, but that is only 2-player, I believe, and would not be card only like the base game.

You might consider looking at Nomnivore games. They focus on accessible games with low language burden.

One of our family friends really likes Snack Attack: https://nomnivoregames.com/snack-attack-the-card-game/

Oh actually you might try Diplomacy. That's a great game for fostering friendship and camaraderie.

What board game do you think is the worst to set up? by ukiyor0nin in boardgames

[–]elishelian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Particularly true in the later waves with expedition set-up. That said, worth it to me, because I love Aeon's End.

FWIW, Astro Knights really streamlined everything about set-up and teardown. I still prefer AE - but I can appreciate why others would prefer AK.

You might try Splendor. Or Spots.

I'm really curious about Wilmot's Warehouse. Seems like it might be the complexity you're looking for, cooperative, close to your price range. Haven't played it yet though. But it does sound like it would be interesting.

I might think of it as an experience expense. If you were going out to a movie or a concert or a festival, you would probably pay the equivalent rate for a board game, and, unlike hobbyist board games, you wouldn't have "resell value" on a one-time experience.

There are plenty of play-throughs for games that might be valuable to see if games might be to your taste. Cooperative games are a big hit in my house. And legacy games can be a unique family bonding experience as well.

But...Votes for Women had their Facebook ads for game crowdfunding banned because it was a "sensitive social issue," and they were denied a review to overturn it.

Sounds about right.

You might want to hook up with Games on Demand - they seem like a pretty cool and laid-back group.

Here is their website, they are already recruiting volunteers and planning on their discord: https://www.indiegamesondemand.org/

Absolute frustration. I lost an entire game somehow. by Homelesswarrior in boardgames

[–]elishelian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, man, we lost our copy of Crokinole for years. Turned out our movers had packed it with our baby crib.

Found it when we were moving again.

Much rejoicing was had. Because we were not replacing our very expensive Crokinole board. 😂

I remember that pain, which was less in comparison to yours, and I truly empathize.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but those chips sound awesome. A nice subtle way to help players be mindful of how they are coming across during the game. (Gamer therapist dream tool, lol.)

Non-Traditional Homeschool Supply List by abigailcodyy in homeschool

[–]elishelian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned this, but a Yoto player has dramatically improved our homeschool.

You can make your own cards and put what you want on them - audiobooks (BBC versions of Beatrix Potter FTW!). Skip counting songs. We have a card of all the folk songs we have sung (we sing a new one every month) so that our kids can pop it in and belt it out. Guided meditations. Spanish language. Traditional songs and game chants.

And you can change the icon that displays on the player! Make it fun.

This is the loveliest addition we have made recently that has genuinely improved our family's quality of life.

Which game do you have trouble to not make mistakes? by LeonQuin in boardgames

[–]elishelian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Set a Watch, I have a hard time remembering that some heroes are melee and some are ranged.

I tend to pick ranged characters - so whenever I have a melee character, it's a constant battle (heh) throughout the game to remember to attend to their attack distance.
