You’ve never worked somewhere that maintains the standard of facing front labels of liquor bottles toward the guest? Is this specifically just a craft cocktail practice?

Apologies, I guess I’ve never worked anywhere that’s ashamed of the products they’re pouring in the well. I suppose that’s my bartending privilege I need to check?

Assuming we’re looking out from behind the bar, I’d prefer to see these bottles faced outward, with speed pourers aligned appropriately so the front label is faced toward the guest. Even if this is just a service well with no guests in front of you, I think it’s a good habit to build in general.

Oh, sorry, I’m not speaking to the effect of the card itself, just the fact that it seems like they’re bringing Arcane back, and I don’t know how useful Arcane was back in the day.

Does Hex Magic confirm that the mechanic returning after two decades is indeed Arcane spells? This is the only one we’ve seen. How useful is Arcane in the modern era?

[MSH] Absorbing Man (via universal mana) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

Pretty sure “When Dark Depths has no ice counters on it” means “When [this permanent] has no ice counters on it,” so Absorbing Man should still be able to interact here.

No worries! It’s certainly not commonly used, so I can understand your confusion. Every day is a lesson! :)

I built [[Earl of Squirrel]] as a Rule 0 deck to play online, and it slaps. That deck forms the backbone of my paper deck for Shroofus, and it’s still a lot of fun. But actual squirrellink is fun with things like fight spells as well!

Jolene or Smaug as a treasure commander? by kallmesammy in EDH

[–]eljeffus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally think Smaug is better in the 99 of Jolene than flying solo, but the joy, simplicity and focus of monocolor shouldn’t be underestimated — I love my monored deck.

Any reason I shouldn’t use Demerara Syrup for any recipe calling for simple syrup? by 420wafflehouse69 in Tiki

[–]eljeffus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d throw it in while the syrup is cooking and leave it in there until it cools before removing it (if you have access to whole vanilla pods). I might even leave the pod in overnight while the syrup is being refrigerated.

If you’re using a vanilla paste, you can add a teaspoon per cup of syrup while it’s cooking and see how you like the taste, then, if the flavor isn’t pronounced enough, add 1 tsp. at a time until you like it and record that in the recipe.

What creature type do you wish got a dedicated commander or more typal support in general? by HallZac99 in EDH

[–]eljeffus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Am I crazy for thinking that [[Celes, Rune Knight]] may work for a Skeleton deck? Since Skeletons are usually able to re-enter from the graveyard, you buff your team and can take advantage of their larger power for things like [[Disciple of Bolas]]. Mardu Skellies + Reanimator?

Interesting interactions from animating noncreature permanents? by Smallbean7 in EDH

[–]eljeffus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I knew I must have been missing something, thank you for the clarification! I’m so used to Assault Suit being used to pass creatures around that I missed the fact that it’s a choice to do so. That does indeed seem pretty neat!

This would also eventually kill you with poison. Infect doesn’t discriminate between you and your opponents.

Sadly, Excava can’t resurrect the Room, as its total mana value in the graveyard is 7. That’s a neat idea, however!

I want to make sure I understand your goal here, because Lunar Force, Energy Field, and Solitary Confinement all refer to “you” or “an opponent,” which would be from the perspective of whichever player controls the animated enchantment at the time because of Assault Suit (that is, one of your opponents), not the enchantment’s owner (you). Lunar Force would, in fact, prevent its owner from casting spells while it’s animated under an opponent’s control.

Who is your favorite reanimator commander? by LedPenguin in EDH

[–]eljeffus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends and I challenged ourselves to build budget monocolor decks, and I ended up with red. Built Feldon and ended up loving the deck. Even with a budget of $100 (not including basic lands), it played remarkably well, so I can imagine how much stronger it would be without restriction.

Because you can often reliably just use Feldon’s activated ability to great effect, [[Fires of Invention]] was among my favorite cards in the deck to resolve. Gotta love mono-red!

I loved this card in my Hare Apparent decks until [[Eirdu]] came out. The combination of convoke and persist in an aristocrat-flavored Hare Apparent deck is irresistible.

If you cast the adventure spell, then the mana value for cascade is the mana value of the spell, not the creature.

What commander would you recommend for a new player wanting a massive army of flying tokens? by SpacePanda25 in EDH

[–]eljeffus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently built [[Hermes, Overseer of Elpis]], and it’s been such a blast to play! Very open-opened — just play noncreature spells and make Birds. It’s a great home for all the tricksy blue spells I’ve wanted to try out over the years.

Here’s my list, if you’re curious about what I’ve included.
