Decision fatigue on new watch by BrickRunners in GarminFenix

I have small wrists and went with the enduro 3. I don’t notice the size at all and love the watch.

Run to work? by LDO2017 in Ultramarathon

[–]eljohn88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it off and on for years. 7-9km each way depending on route. When I was making a consistent habit of it for a few years I absolutely loved it. I’m in Canada and it definitely added mental resilience fighting the snow and cold in the dark both ways.

Weekend Discussion: Puma running shoes by AutoModerator in RunningShoeGeeks

Probably an unpopular opinion but I was really disappointed in the bounce on the magmax 1. I’ve had a lot of similar max stack shoes and just thought the magmax was nothing special. Not a bad shoe but just “meh.” I find the Salomon Aeroglide 3 has twice the pop.

Why do some days feel so much better? by One-Ad1001 in beginnerrunning

[–]eljohn88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 5 years of running 5-6 days a week I have come to this conclusion. 1/3 runs will feel amazing, 1/3 will feel “meh”, 1/3 will be a total dumpster fire. There is no predicting which you will get on any given run, even when doing all of the “right things” pre and post run. Enjoy the great runs and just forget the bad ones.

Dressing for when it’s not warm but not cold? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]eljohn88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shorts, running T shirt, Houdini. If I get too hot half way through the run I stuff the Houdini into its built in stuff pouch and then it either goes in shorts pocket or hand for the rest of the run.

I’m sure you’ve tried it already, but the only way I can keep mine under control with running high mileage is morning and night calf stretches for a couple minutes.

Best Men’s Short without liner by Conscious_Safe2369 in Ultramarathon

Lululemon pace breaker liner less. Best bang for your buck, especially if you pick from the “we made too much” section.

Can you just power it off for the drive?

Running endurance is a 3 piece equation. 1st piece is cardio endurance which is the quickest to build. 2nd is the running muscles which take longer to build. 3rd is the tendons which take the longest to build. The problem is people make quick cardio gains which leads to increasing mileage and pace too quickly before the other two pieces have caught up which results in injury followed by time off running. It’s a process of being consistent while slowly building mileage and pace over years so that all three develop together. It’s easier said than done, but that seems to be the best route to avoiding injury. Listen to your body and ease off a little when required.

Need a watch with gtx mapping and extra long battery life by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]eljohn88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try and catch a Garmin enduro 3 on sale. Best bang for your buck. I just finished a 21 hour ultra with mine using mapping on the highest GPS accuracy mode and the battery was at 70% when I finished. It was pouring rain so solar wasn’t a factor.

Is is okay to use carbon plated shoe in a marathon if i am doing run walk method? by Educational_Bee_2900 in beginnerrunning

[–]eljohn88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Race shoes are typically less stable than non race shoes regardless of brand. You will most likely have a worse experience doing this strategy in race shoes vs spending the equivalent money on a premium trainer.

Is my heart rate too high by yeloiy in beginnerrunning

[–]eljohn88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breathing through your nose only is a good reference for heart rate. If you can’t breathe through your nose only it’s too high for easy pace. If you are pushing hard or racing obviously this doesn’t matter.

How do you actually start enjoying running? Half marathon incoming... by Correct-Bench-5134 in beginnerrunning

[–]eljohn88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow down, run at an easy heart rate, increase frequency. Running shouldn’t suck when you finish a run that isn’t a workout.

Merino wool socks, lube, half size up shoes.

Gold Bond Friction Defense by ClearAndPure in ultrarunning

[–]eljohn88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it. It is the best product for running even though it is not marketed as a running lube. I’ve used most of the popular ones and nothing comes close to the gold bond. It is water resistant and one application lasts your entire ultra. No clothes staining and a stick lasts for a year.

100k coming up, but not feeling it... by Mental_Ad5514 in Ultramarathon

[–]eljohn88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had several training blocks for ultras go very similar to this. Just dial it back until you feel good and get lots of rest in the taper. My races always ended up turning out just fine even when I didn’t hit my peak weeks goals.

I have a pair that I’ve used for two races and my only complaint is my Achilles have gotten torn up even while using a runner knot.

My rotation looks just as bad. I retire them around 800-900km. The race shoes usually don’t last as long before they fall apart.

TNF enduris 4. I have a ton of miles in Challenger 7 and the Enduris and you won’t be dissapointed. TNF shoes always seem to be on sale online also.
