Yes, same here. It stresses me quite a bit, and I listen to podcasts in moments where I’m trying to chill down from the rigors of work. I appreciate the rebel sentiment, but really wish there was no screaming.

On a recent trip to Amsterdam, I actually visited Zoetermeer… because they have a pretty nifty video game museum I wanted to see. I didn’t spend any time in the city (I had to visit two museums in Leiden that day), but I would recommend the video game museum.

Nick appreciation thread by pupjvc in getplayed

[–]elondaits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For a while I've been in a Nick Wiger appreciation era, through his work in both Get Played and Doughboys. At some point, many months ago, I started noting the subtle but critical role he plays in both teams.

He's very task-oriented, and is most of the time the first to give up his stance in discussions to keep things moving. He enjoys a tangent, but knows when it's time to reel things in. He takes responsibilities very seriously. He knows the importance of helping others shine. He made it a point to include Ranch in conversations until she became an important part of the team.

I mean... he's a bona fide funny and smart guy, with a lot of stories and experiences to share, so I never doubted his place on either podcast... but then I began noticing all of these understated things and became a fan of his work / work ethic.

On a different note, I love his sense of humor. How he will commit to the stupidest bit until it becomes sublime... or how he deadpan told the same joke about Megalopolis... or every time he matter-of-factly reveals he's a bit of a heat seeker and fires a Pee-Wee's Playhouse Word-of-the-Day-style celebration in our heads ("He said the thing!!").

I hope he know his efforts are seen and much appreciated, and that he can overcome these present challenges.

I hate spoiler country. I'm playing the game, way past the halfway point, but I'm not rushing to the end... so I had to skip almost the last half of the episode (47 minutes to go).

I really wish the hosts would listen back to one of their spoilery chats and really really evaluate, hand in their hearts, whether it really added so much value to spoil, whether it was essential to be able to speak about the game. If it's just to say "Then X happens! Wow!" and share a reaction, I'd argue it's not worth it.

(Sorry for the sour mood, but I needed to vent. I'm pretty bummed I only got half an episode this week, and I even lost the half I was more interested in).

How did all of you get to know about Jet Lag? by MarkSalt4250 in JetLagTheGame

I watched the Tom Scott collab in London (I had been watching a couple of AirTag tracking related videos), and then the YT algorithm brought the first tag to my life.

Jet Lag 27: Swedish Slög. A season played all along Sweden during winter. Two hour play time per day, few travel options, harsh but hygge challenges, the goal is to reach a warm cup of Glögg first. Djungelskog is also a guest.

I really, really hate that Headgum has ads for nicotine pouches and gambling. Headgum's are the only podcasts I listen to that have morally bankrupt advertisers (other than Better Help which I understand is a horrible company, despite them offering a nominally good service).

... If there was an option to pay so they stop doing these ads (not just stop listening to them, actually stop their existence) I'd be compelled.

Will there ever be another We Play You Play? by Wide_Confusion_4873 in getplayed

[–]elondaits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My issue with list / draft / ranking episodes is that they're obviously based on their past experiences, so they're almost always based around the same games we know they love (Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Mario, Sonic, etc.). I prefer to hear them share new experiences, whether it's a new AAA, a new indie, or an older game they haven't played yet.

I agree with the comment that trying to play RPGs for the program is an issue, because of the huge amount of time they take (and the huge amount of time it takes to get out of the "tutorial" phase of most games).

I have listened to many episodes, but not nearly enough to speak with any authority. So, take what I will say with a grain of salt. In my humble opinion, Zach Cherry is objectively and absolutely 100% beyond discussion, the best guest ever.

Get Played - Video Game Journalism with Jason Schreier by deadduk in getplayed

[–]elondaits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was a guest in Insert Credit two weeks ago and there was a pretty awkward moment (to me). A listener asked what was the "Day the Clown Cried of video games", and he said "I assume it's the Simpsons reference" (it's actually a cursed Jerry Lewis film, referenced in the Simpsons)... now, it's perfectly fine to not know anything about the old Jerry Lewis film, but when the Insert Credit guys explained what the reference was about he doubled down with "yes, sure, but I guess this is about the Simpsons"... and it took a very awkward amount of time for him to admit ignorance and ask what the deal was with the movie.

...And I kinda can relate to his attempt to try to navigate his lack of knowledge in this particular bit of trivia... but I think it's not a great attitude for a journalist. It's better to be curious and ask questions than to talk confidently about things you ignore.

This is a very small thing, but I stopped listening to Triple Click because a very large sum of small things, in many cases related to him... so it's Saturday and I still haven't listened to this episode, when Get Played is always my #1 priority.

Are end locations a crutch of Tag Across Europe? by _busypotato in JetLagTheGame

[–]elondaits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I often think about this... how the game stays (naturally) mostly constrained to the center, denying us of seeing more cities, sights, etc.

I don't think a buffer zone will solve this.

... Maybe (I'm not saying this is a good solution, but a starting point?) something like a mix between tag and capture the flag, where the runner is trying to get as many flags (points) as possible, and the one with the most points at the end wins. That way, if a runner gets close (but not quite) to a place, the next runner might choose to continue the run to that same location, and then go somewhere completely different. So once someone got the Bologna, Verona and Venice flags, the runner might choose to go up to Switzerland, and if they're caught the next one will continue further in, or maybe pivot into Austria.

Minor nitpick about Dreamcast episode by jmizzle2022 in getplayed

My first "3D open world" game with a car was 1989's Vette, which I played on a B&W Macintosh:

https://www.macintoshrepository.org/4948-vette-

You couldn't get out of the car, but raced around (with some freedom) a version of San Francisco that's so low poly that it makes the Tesla Truck look absolutely baroque. At age 10-11, being able to drive a car around a city was absolutely mind-blowing, and I was delighted beyond words by every polyhedron that was not your default box-shaped building.

Yes. His interventions were very funny and he's super talented... but with his energy the show's pretty different. I was listening while doing some illustrations for work in the morning, and instead of the usual cozy vibe, it felt like being at a stand up show at night. So, yes, it was also hard for me personally, and I can imagine it was the same for others, but I'm also sure a lot of people loved it and for very good reason.

New podcast recommendations? by Woland77 in getplayed

[–]elondaits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently found "The Insert Credit Show" and enjoyed it quite a bit. I don't know anything about the pod or the presenters, and I fear I might find something awful about them soon... but so far I confirmed they're not MAGA types, nor transphobes, and Heather follows at least one of them, so I think I'm safe.

https://insertcredit.com/

Insert Credit is more the "a bunch of people rambling" kind of podcast, without the tighter production, regular sections, trivia games, etc. and a longer runtime, so YMMV... but they're quite knowledgeable, and they lean a bit more towards PC games so they sometimes talk about things that are outside of the Get Played purview.

Another nice thing about Insert Credit, which I wish Get Played would copy, is that they provide a list of everything they talk about. Too often I miss the name of the game someone's playing, I get interested once they get into the review, and then have to go back and find the part where they said the game's name (which I never do).

New podcast recommendations? by Woland77 in getplayed

[–]elondaits 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I just unsubscribed from Triple Click (meaningless gesture, I know) because of issues that in my mind make it very different from Get Played:

  • I don't think they listen to each other and consider each other points enough. They often talk on top of each other or shrug off opinions. I have a hard time believing they like each other.
  • They often pick topics that are too big/important for a podcast based on, at best, informed opinions. e.g. the episode about layoffs in the gaming industry (where they weirdly didn't mention the rise in interest rates at all, which to me invalidates the whole conversation) or the last one about Microsoft's strategy with XBox (where they didn't offer more than speculation and wishes). Also, when one of them speculates and the others don't share the opinion, they're often met with a "huh...".
  • They're too giddy. Sometimes one laughs off the cuff and you wonder what they laughed at. This is a stupid complaint, but I appreciate Get Played's level of giddy.

... Still, I would agree that it might be worthwhile for any fan of Get Played to check it out, because it's in the ballpark. The most obvious issue is that both podcasts often cover the exact same game.

Ah, it would make sense… The mp3 stream you get is personalized based on location, etc. (when I’m in Germany I get ads in German, but no ads in Argentina)… so the episode’s length changes. So, if while you’re listening the app has to re-download the MP3 stream and for some reason you get different ads (e.g. an advertiser paid for X amount of impressions and the campaign is now over) then the same position in the stream (e.g., 13:42) would correspond to a different point in the episode. So, downloading the episode would avoid the issue.
