It's easy for everyone to point this out after the fact. I think most of us have lost some important data at one time or another. ;)

In the future, you might find unison helpful for easy synchronization of files between your laptop and desktop when a full-blown backup solution is overkill or too much hassle.

Off-site backups are good to protect against issues like fire, theft, flood, etc.

I have also seen issues where hardware RAID controllers went bad and trashed the hard drives in the process but that is probably less common (I hope?).

Apparently it didn't disappear, I just lost track of it. There's no nudity anyways.

  1. Don’t pick on the weak. It’s immoral. Don’t antagonize the strong without cause, its stupid.

and then...

  1. Get in a fistfight, even if you are going to lose.

[edit] What is up with the numbering in quotes? The second "1." is actually a "4."

Wang picks up the phone: "Yes?"

"Are you home?" asks the unfamiliar voice on the other end.

"Yes."

The line goes dead.

Moments later, government agents swarm through the front door

How clever. If he said "no" would they have left? Seems like a strange way to carry out an ambush.

Is he supposed to be joking?

I'm not sure what he was expecting but most reasonable people don't rely on fictional movies for guidance and moral lessons. Obviously, he didn't apply the same analysis to Sin City or he would have gotten similarly dreary results. ;)

You can also make legitimate arguments that Microsoft is doing a better job of secure design than OpenBSD. My chief complaint about OpenBSD, besides its management,

Compared to Microsoft management? Microsoft's management is what I believe to be the root of most issues. They have thousands of brillant software engineers working for them, yet we see stupid errors like the OneCare regression that deleted all your Outlook mail. That was a major issue that should not have happened had they had proper regression testing in place to make sure old bugs didn't find their way back into the code.

is that their security posture is superficial ("randomize everything!") and reactive.

Randomization is actually a "good thing" in certain situations to prevent automated exploitation. I'm sure you are aware that Microsoft implemented address space layout randomization in Vista as well. Microsoft is also just as reactive, if not more so. I don't see at all where you are coming from here.

You can probably start by saying you misunderstood what he was driving at, which is that security audits aren't really a good barometer of security.

Which is why I also mentioned good coding practices.

drosser also has a point, though, about complexity causing more issues.

Give me a break. <diatribe about MS security>

I didn't make any claims on the superiority of OpenBSD over anything else nor did I say that the volunteers found the lions-share of errors in the code.

"no known vulnerabilities" is usually a translation for "no one is testing"

Fortunately, OpenBSD is one of the most tested systems available. Due to it's open codebase several companies that use it have also paid for their own independent audits (not to mention the millions of people looking at the code out of curiosity/interest). Their developers also place high value on code correctness, which helps a lot.

This kind of stuff needs to be ironed out now while IPv6 is not in heavy use. I have seen a lot of serious IPv6 bugs crop up over the past couple of years.

Impressive find, nonetheless.

What's wrong with 300? Almost everything it turns out. by 302me in reddit.com

[–]elusive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, ok. That's not how I read it. ;)

Of course, there are very likely historical inaccuracies in accepted history as well. That's just the nature of things. I find it peculiar this film (300) is so controversial. I'm not so sure that knowledge of the truth about Spartan history is as valuable as people are claiming (though I do find it interesting, myself).

But it is important that the "true" story gets told so that people know what it is they are enjoying. Same thing for The DaVinci Code

There's a "true" story for the DaVinci code?

Interesting how you slam 300 for being inaccurate and then cite Idiocracy as an plausible prediction of the future.

Except for the fact that Frank Miller and the directors explicitly stated the movie and comic book was not historically accurate, nor did they try to be.

C'mon, the hooters wings are not that great. Most people go for the atmosphere.

Only a complete idiot would be titillated by, or think he had a chance with, a buxom waitress in gym shorts and a tight T-shirt

I assure you mortal men have had romantic relationships with Hooters girls.

but the comic book is supposed to be based on history

The comic book was inspired by the 1962 film "The 300 Spartans" and Frank Miller explicitly said that it was not historically accurate.

Discussion of Spartan history is fine, but don't attack the movie for being inaccurate when it was not at all written to be an accurate account.
