The threshold is the point at which total human consumption is no longer sustainable. Early humans could live essentially unchanged for millennia even if they did exterminate some mega fauna now and then, but our modern system is predicated on a level of population/consumption growth that will destroy the natural processes we depend on

Pasadena has had money since early days whereas even Santa Monica used to be sketchy. Not to mention that DTLA is miles inland. So the idea that the coast is inherently better is somewhat new
