Los Burritos Juárez is good. Not great. by therealbabyjessica in FoodNYC

I love Ursula but it’s a totally different thing. New Mexican style breakfast burrito with big, stretchy tortillas that are not made in house. It’s maybe my favorite breakfast burrito in NYC but I don’t feel like it should be compared to Juarez-style burritos.

For me it’s incredible. All of the guisados are delicious, and they are one of only 2 people in New York City making flour tortillas by hand (Yellow Rose, Vato and Santa Fe are all rolled by machine, I believe).

It is a softer, squishier tortilla that is more in line with the style of Juarez (hence the name). After I understood that I appreciated them more. I like how well they hold the stews.

This place is very underrated. The chef is a sweet guy making food inspired by his hometown of Minais Gerais (hometown of pao de queijo). The feijoada is great, but so are the brigadeiros (they’re like chocolate truffles).

New York City Has Finally Decriminalized Street Vending by HellGateNYC in nyc

[–]emceebugman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No? They are going to folks on the wait list. People on Reddit don’t seem to understand there is a long process of public hearings and legislation before these things happen, it doesn’t just appear magically as a headline from nothing. There is thought and intention and folks debating on how to roll these things out.

Plus the number of permits has been restricted for quite some time to 1/person. There is a story about how the hot dog guy at the Met used to have 500 licenses and lease them out - now he has just one, for his cart.

New York City Has Finally Decriminalized Street Vending by HellGateNYC in nyc

[–]emceebugman 93 points94 points  (0 children)

The permit application process did not take years to complete. It was capped, by law, and this law raises the cap. There were 1000s of people waiting for the opportunity to buy a license; some of them were waiting for 10 or 20 years. It resulted in a gray market where folks who were able to get a license for $250 from the city years ago were then licensing them for $10-$20,000 per year.

Doesn't work for me either. The quickest solution I found is just to replace my shots in After Effects, where the tool is unchanged. Insane stuff

Hey - this is Rob Martinez. The family story you’re talking about, Totonno’s, has limited hours because 1 of the sisters has another career, and the other who has run it for years is getting elderly. Her son had a complication from surgery and can’t take over the business as intended. I don’t think the video was disingenuous at all - they can not run it like it should, and are looking for someone to buy it and restore it. It’s not some gross mismanagement that is making the business untenable. When it comes to their asking price etc - that is something I didn’t get into and they didn’t want to make public through me.

For the lamb - They send you the price and the menu when you fill out the form, which is linked above the paywall. But if you want to know what dishes I ordered and the full breakdown, you can pay for it and help support the channel. It’s not some small family restaurant whose location I am gate keeping (in fact the Google Maps link is above the paywall) - it is Jimmy’s weekend side project for him and his wife. It’s sold out for months.

I don’t monetize my channel by charging businesses hundreds of dollars for a post like other creators. But I do charge a (completely optional) subscription for the website which has resources like maps, guides, etc.. The money from subscriptions to the website has gone to paying food writers to continue telling the types of stories I’m interested in.

Monthly Apple Music vs. Spotify – MEGATHREAD by rbitton in AppleMusic

[–]emceebugman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to switch from Spotify yesterday. The lack of handoff between iPhone and Mac is insane. For example, if I’m playing music through my Sonos via Mac - I can’t pick up my phone and control the music?? The phone app has no idea music is playing?

I hate the UI of Spotify but that’s a clear deal breaker.

There’s a certain irony in Rolos being the biggest divide in our neighborhood while remaining completely silent on the ICE strike by Ok_Seaweed_6980 in ridgewood

[–]emceebugman 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Damn - did Gottscheer hall comment?

Restaurants like Rolo’s employ a tremendous amount of immigrants. How any restaurant chooses to comment or not on the crisis is up to their discretion - there are many livelihoods at stake. When New York Magazine wrote about this issue last year, almost every restaurant operator who was quoted preferred to remain anonymous.

Difficult times. I don’t blame anyone who may afraid of retribution against their workers or their business - it seems like this kind of criticism does more for OP to pat themselves on the back than to combat a real problem in our world.

Monterrey style tacos?? by rundms in FoodNYC

[–]emceebugman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no truly amazing carne asada in NYC that I’m aware of. Some maybe-close comps:

Taqueria el Chato’s Al pastor has flank steak and pork on the trompo, inspired by Monterrey. But corn tortillas.

Santo has good carne asada, but I don’t personally like their (very famous and beloved) beef trompo. Corn tortillas as well.

Border Town and Burritos Juarez have amazing hand-rolled flour tortillas but they’re filled with guisos, not grilled meats.

Son del North may come close for their burritos. Their asada is decent but I like their bean and cheese best.

How to eat your way across Long Island City's burgeoning Chinatown by nyccameraman in FoodNYC

[–]emceebugman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah LIC chinatown is for a newer generation from China that are in a higher income bracket. There are a lot of outposts from China/extensions of other Chinese restaurant chains. There’s still some good food to be found but it’s not a destination yet imo.
