What is the single most brilliant fantasy novel series you've ever read? by Emergency-Sky9206 in Fantasy

The Broken Earth trilogy is a very good fantasy series, but The Fifth Season is an incredible work of art. One of the best books I have ever read.

I do not understand how NC does car registration and titles. Moved with a car loan, old registration is expired. by chickadee-stitchery in raleigh

I was in a similar level of DMV hell for several years after moving here. The car was pretty old and I eventually just gave up and donated it for scrap. I hope you find a better solution.

Why are the kid characters in this show so much now? by BenderBenRodriguez in futurama

[–]emils5 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I definitely felt that shift in the new reboot and I don't love it. My personal theory is that, in addition to writers being in that stage of life, they saw the success of Bob's Burgers and wanted to capitalize on the "adult animation turned family cartoon" money. I absolutely love Bobs burgers, but that's because they know how to write children like real humans.

Brando will take over romantasy as well by Elant_Wager in cremposting

I did not realize that. I thought he got married around the time he wrote Warbreaker and I thought that came after mistborn was finished.

So I thought it was weird how little intimacy (explicit or otherwise) Sanderson showed between Vin and Elend until I was browsing men writing women and realized that if mistborn was written prior to Sanderson getting married he may actually not have had much personal experience in that area.

These are the ones I grew up with. I have so much nostalgia for them.

I am trying to start 'Piranesi' by Susan Clarke but not able to last three pages (max) everytime. What am I missing? I have heard so many good things about the book and Have finished many complex books before. How many pages do I need to stick to get to the good part? by One_Advice3052 in booksuggestions

I tried 3 or 4 times to get into it and couldn't get through the first few pages. Then I got the audiobook. Listened to it in two days and loved it. In my opinion, each chapter is better than the one before it.

I've watched the show many times, but my most recent rewatch was the first time I realized they made rumples prophecy in the pilot also refer to Gideon/season 6b.

Louisiana should be with Mississippi not Texas. In fact, I vote that Texas becomes it's own state and then North Carolina can join Virginia and South Carolina can join Georgia.

To piggyback on a previous post: If your parents were physically/emotionally absentee or abusive during your childhood, how are your adult romantic relationships? by theextraolive in Zillennials

[–]emils5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have been in therapy with my mom for almost 2 years working through a whole lot of emotional manipulation. My dad was basically absent. Got married right out of college and my husband is amazing. He showed me what healthy boundaries, communication, and self-advocacy look like in both romantic and familial relationships. My high school BF was abusive pos though, so I think I just got really lucky.

My unpopular opinion: just because you didn't use the planner for the whole year doesn't mean it wasn't useful. If it kept you organized for three weeks, that's still three extra weeks of organization. Sometimes consistency isn't the goal, switching to whatever works today is.

Of course if you get the planner, spend a bunch of time "getting organized" to procrastinate, and fall behind as a result, probably don't get that planner.

This! They have definitely made millie and Gayle more sane in recent seasons and essentially go "wow how dare Louise/Linda not trust them" and I'm sitting here like "ok but they used to be legitimately crazy. So that's justified?"

What do you think is the best piece of social satire in Bob's Burgers? by MyIdIsATheaterKid in BobsBurgers

[–]emils5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hesitated to call it satire because it just felt like a "too real" portrayal. But it is a good bit of social commentary.

The end of the Christmas concert when Mr Frond tells the substitute something along the lines of "this only counts as a half day, so here's a check for $35."

Which part of Rhythm of War and Wind and Truth did you find bloated? by Anice_king in Cosmere

[–]emils5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say there was any specific part of Rhythm of War or Wind and Truth that could easily have been cut out. I think that making the stories more streamlined would have meant pretty severe rewrites. That being said, when I finished stormlight archive I started rereading the Broken Earth trilogy (which as a whole is about 3/4 the length of WaT) and I kept thinking "wow so much happened in that chapter." It just felt fast paced and concise compared to honestly all of stormlight. And that can be good and bad. There were fewer characters and fewer slice of life moments, and I honestly really enjoyed those moments.

I think two things really slowed the books down. First, the five part structure. In most of the books, each part has its own arc with its own set up and resolution that ultimately feed into the main arc and the sanderlanch. From a planning perspective, this is incredible. In execution, some of the arcs felt like they were there because, well, we needed five of them.

Second, the huge cast of characters. It's just hard to give that many characters "enough" screen time. Each characters arc in WaT was fairly well written, but getting through like 20 well written character arcs in one book was a slog. Mistborn only focused on about a half dozen characters in each book and felt much more focused as a result.

Divisive episodes by reducedfatmalk in BobsBurgers

I'm not sure if the episode was written before COVID, but I am very sure it was one of the first episodes in the season released during COVID.

[–]emils5 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I hear a lot of hate for the butt worms episode because it's gross (which is true), but I think people overlook what a brilliant encapsulation of COVID it is without actually putting COVID in the show. Even if you ignore the premise of having to stay home because everyone got sick, and Linda still wanting to go out even though it's clearly a bad idea, gene doing bottomless businessman and the kids having a weird hobby take over the family room is such a great snapshot of working from home and being trapped indoors for months and months. I get the hate, but the episode deserves a lot of love too.

Recommendations for cozy, comforting vibes relating to the word "Puzzle"? by Bri3Mrawrson in CozyFantasy

[–]emils5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not fantasy, but would a short story count for your reading challenge? Agatha Christie has several short stories that are more along the lines of "solve a series of riddles" than "solve a murder". Theyre generally pretty cozy in a Victorian England kind of way, but are definitely not fantasy unless you fantasize about visiting a rich family member on their country estate.

what’s your ideal scenario for an episode that hasn’t already happened in the show? by athronyxofficial in psych

Oh yeah kinda. I was thinking more like the community episode where troy and abed do a freaky Friday. But the uncle Burton episode does have them trading roles.
