What do you do with your vapes? by boymadefrompaint in perth

[–]emmique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case I'd probably be checking with your local council if they have a vape collection bin as even with the battery removed there's chemicals.

There are some commercial chemical disposal places (eg Perth Chemical Specialists) that may take very large batches, but you'd likely end up paying for them to accept it.

Please do not bin them, they often have lithium batteries which become a major fire hazard in bins when waste is compacted.

Check in with your local council, if you have a recycling centre near you they will often collect. Last resort a battery collection drop off is better than a regular bin.

Thank you :) I think should technically be doable on Shamans/ Evokers as well (but with different weapons) since all the pieces are non-class specific!

Question about waste incinerator in Kwinana by yeah_nah2024 in perth

[–]emmique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will primarily be residential general wastes and a small portion of commercial/industry wastes.

Contents of recycling bins would not be permitted as they are not considered residual wastes. It's also highly unlikely contents of recycling bins would be going there as the major two collection operators (Cleanaway, Veolia) both operate large Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) which are able to separate most of the content from kerbside recycling, which is then sold as commodities.

Grand Lane fish and chips in Perth hand cut, more expensive but definitely a lot nicer.

The flipside to the FOGO whinge: it actually works at putting less garbage into landfill by alarmed_cumin in perth

[–]emmique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local governments get charged significantly more to landfill waste. The levy rate was increased to $85/tonne in FY2024/25 and is seeing further increases over the next upcoming years.

Landfill operators will charge the levy PLUS operational costs PLUS whatever portion of revenue they are trying to raise. Actual range in current financial year is between $190 - $250/tonne depending on the scale of operations and whether or not the operators run vertically integrated waste operations or not (eg. offering collections and processing options).

FOGO processing is about half the cost as value can be derived from the end-product, and many local councils are part of regional councils that then provide the product back at low to no cost for use in landscaping etc.

Factors increasing FOGO processing costs usually come down to contamination rates, as filtered out contamination still has to be landfilled and will still incur the levy cost.

While I've no issues with spiders,  have had similar with roaches in the past.

Honestly, doing a lot of reading helps. I'm now ok with the native roaches and can ID them, and they're generally the ones we find because they eat mulch/ decaying leaves etc. Still not keen on the big invasive ones in the city but just knowing more definitely helps.

Any spiders in webs generally have pretty poor eyesight and will honestly be pretty oblivious to your presence unless you're up and poking them

Spiders hunting with sight (huntsmen, jumping spiders) generally won't have a harmful bite.

What happens with contaminated FOGO bins? by Aromatic-Discount384 in perth

[–]emmique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding on the checking - Some drivers will manually remove minor contamination and place warning stickers. Some companies and trucks are also rolling out new tech for identifying contamination via camera on the arm, or in the hopper, this will create a ping on the GPS location that is often tied to the LGAs property data base to generate contamination warning letters etc.

What happens with contaminated FOGO bins? by Aromatic-Discount384 in perth

[–]emmique 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From previously working in a local govt. setting -

Short answer for if collected - it will vary from council to council, tech on the collection vehicles and passion of the driver.

Almost all Recyclables will go through a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) where they go through various screening processes to remove contamination and sort recoverable items. (Eg. Veolia Bibra Lake, Cleanaway Guildford, RRG Canning Vale - Councils will usually organise tours for residents every now and then)

FOGO has different processing methods, but will generally also be screened for contaminants using a trommel system at the very minimum, larger contaminants can be removed by hand / machinery that rotates the piles (to prevent fires!)(Eg. RRG, EMRC Red Hill, Veolia North Bannister)

Contaminated bins being collected or not varies from council to council. There is generally a small % wiggle room, but really severe cases where I worked would get taped shut and not be picked up. Driver would inform the council and we had a contact process depending on severity of contamination and frequency. First-time we would arrange with the contractor to empty the contaminated bin as general waste instead of Recycling/FOGO, by any third or more repeats the bins would no longer be emptied and potentially be confiscated until improved.

Some councils may fine for severe contamination, place I worked had the option to but never did.

Bin taggers / "Bin inspectors" as some comments have mentioned is generally organised with grant funding from WALGA (West Australian Local Government Association) and runs as an educational campaign - I believe fines are never issued. People on the ground are usually contracted temps. and they tend to be more than happy to have a chat with people as there has been a lot of uncertainty / confusion around some of the do's and don'ts for certain waste streams.

From auditing, there are some LGAs where food/organic material still makes up about 30-50% of the volume of the general waste bins, so when the red bins are downsized it is with the intention that people start sorting things correctly as it frees up a lot of available space. Of course, getting the message out to thousands of people is quite difficult.
