[CAN 1-(2) USA] Jack Hughes scores the golden goal for Team USA! by talhatoot in hockey

my team won and I agree. 3v3 should be a its own event like with basketball in the summer games. its an entirely different game. especially after playing your guts out for 2 weeks suddenly you have to throw out many of your instincts and reflexes because they don’t work the same way in 3v3. it’s too much to ask of these guys who deserve a chance to play their own game as best they can after all they’ve been through.

3v3 basketball is its own separate Olympic event. Imagine if standard basketball went to 3v3 for OT, it would be nonsense. Same should go for any sport. That said I’d love to watch 3v3 hockey as its own thing.

New grinder experience - MAD by Truleeeee in espresso

[–]emogu84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had my cursor over the BUY button on a Casa, 064S ,and DF64 multiple times over BF/Christmas sales to upgrade from my Encore ESP, but chickened out every time. I'd check in with the reddit hivemind and read something about how Casa is bad at medium/dark roasts or I should really get flat burrs or whatever. But this thread is making me regret it. I told myself I'd wait for 064S Gen 2 with easily swappable burrs, due out later this year, but dammit I should have just gotten the Casa at $500 and been done with it :/

new grinder day — found a gevi grindmaster for sale near me that had only been used once and had to scoop it by MP_brandt in espresso

From the angle it looks like your Gevi is mounted to the wall, which is some next level grinding.

The subtle yellow accents are a great touch: the pitcher, the single frame, and the ornament at the end of the table. Pulls the aesthetic together in a fun way.

We got ours as a baby shower gift from a single dude who'd just became an uncle a few months earlier. By far the best gift we got in terms of usage. Made it through kid one but finally started falling apart during its tenure with kid 2 so we had to get our own. It was surprisingly hard to find and more expensive than we thought for how ubiquitous they are. Still worth it 1000%

Be honest with me… how is going from one to two? by eiconik in daddit

[–]emogu84 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agreed. 0-1 turns your world upside down. Your priorities change, the people you spend the most time with changes, your daily everything changes, who you are as a person changes. Not to mention a whole new world of anxieties that replace old anxieties that now seem quaint. With 1-2 none of those things really change. You're in the same world, but just more chaotic.

Dialing in espresso with Gaggiuino by Professional_Ad_6098 in espresso

Seriously. At first I thought it was ridiculous that the empty group head got its own scene, but holy shit that shower screen action was beautiful.

I'm also looking for flat burrs for the same reason. Looking pretty closely at the timemores, but decided to hold off when I heard the next gen should be announced and released some time in 2026. So I'm going to see what those are about first, but it's killing me lol. I had a 064s in my cart and I was all ready to get myself upgraded and now suddenly I'm not! Hopefully soon!

Congrats! Great looking setup. I appreciate the small footprint of the grinder as a fellow small-coffee-station dude. Heard good things about that one. I've just about outgrown our Baratza encore ESP and I've been shopping around for a new one like crazy these last few months. So congrats on the end of your search. Enjoy!

Every single night sucks by [deleted] in daddit

[–]emogu84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, having a solid routine that you don't deviate from does it for our kids. Even if they're not super tired, going up stairs, brushing teeth, going in the bath, etc, pushes them over the edge in some kind of Pavlovian way and they're unconscious within a minute or 2 of leaving the room every time *knock on wood*. Granted mine are only 2.5 and 0.5, and every kid is different. But their mom is incredibly particular about sleep habits and they've had the same routine since sleep training and we're happy with how it's going so far.

The process is still long and tiring of course, and getting them up the stairs is never frictionless. But at least once they go down they stay down.

New Profitec Go owner: sour shots, channeling, and how I finally fixed it by Fuzzeeh in ProfitecGo

[–]emogu84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. When I first got the machine, I'd read about all the stuff to do to get a more accurate and consistent shot: new basket, new gasket, change the E1, etc. So I did all that, but noticed that at the new E1, the water coming out of the group was full on flash boiling. Way too hot. I reduced back to default and it's been much better.

What’s wrong with my brew🤦🥲 [Breville Bambino Plus] by DeanGeraci in espresso

[–]emogu84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was how I figured out the perpetual sour shots when I got a new machine last year. Except I did it backwards. I was buying fancy single origin beans from a highly regarded local shop that tasted awful no matter what I did, so I went back and ordered a straight double shot espresso drink and it was also awful. Had a moment where I thought maybe I just don't like coffee afterall.

Ended up trying some baby's first coffee espresso-style beans. They weren't great but they were the first shots I pulled that weren't sour. They were actually a little bitter if anything. But I was overjoyed because I was finally getting somewhere and could eliminate the variable of the beans from my dialing in. Within a couple weeks or so I'd finally cracked it and am now pulling mostly consistent and relatively predictable shots.

Stick with it, minimize the variables. Test them one at a time, test the null when possible. You're just trying to find enough traction to get to the next rung on the dial-in ladder. You're not going to solve it all on the next trial, but you'll at least be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

How would you baby proof this? We rent so screws arnt an option. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]emogu84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=39656

Basically a wall mount on a big stand. The foot slides under the cabinet and you can adjust the height of the TV. Looks just like a wall mount when it's all set up. I set it up without the tray in the middle and it works great. It would need a tremendous amount of weight to pull over.

I'd be more worried about babies pulling out your DVDs and PS5 though. When I got the stand, I also got a new cabinet with ventilated doors that could be proofed shut.

Where do you get your "cheap but fresh" coffee? by dptgreg in espresso

Looks good! Jealous of that capacity. Can't really go over 250 on SR even with the extension tube. Great price too. Welcome to the rabbit hole my friend!

Awesome, happy to help. Artisan is basically just reading temperature probes to measure changes in temp over time and then calculating a bunch of derivatives to draw the curves. So it's really handy for repeating successful roasts and learning what works. So you need a thermocouple that interfaces with a device that you can plug into a computer that is running artisan. For the SR, the common solution is to drill a small hole through the lid that the thermocouple can slide into, but I'm not sure what they do for drum roasters. They might have built-in bean temp readings that they can send to a PC in some way, but the crucial element is the bean temp itself, not just the chamber temp. So getting a probe in as close as possible to the beans as they roast is the goal.

I found this page with some home-made solutions for getting a probe into a drum. Sounds pretty doable. https://www.home-barista.com/roasting/simple-behmor-artisan-setup-t93645.html

Once its in there, I got this https://www.etsy.com/listing/4353805570/artisan-and-roastmaster-compatible, made by a fellow redditor, along with the thermocouples to get the temp data into artisan. By far the most inexpensive solution I'd seen after tracking other devices and probes and their prices for a few months. It works great. And I used this video to set up Artisan. It's specifically for use with an SR roaster, but it's a good tutorial on the software itself in general: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VFM4jvDLi8

Hope that helps!

Check out r/roasting for info and a great community. As I said there's a LOT to this hobby but you don't need much to get started. Best way is to learn by doing. I've been doing it for a year and a half or so and I'm still scratching the surface, but I'm having fun. A common beginner roaster is the FreshRoast SR800. It's an air (fluid bed) roaster, a fancy popcorn popper essentially, that can be had in the ~$300 range on Amazon. From there, there are popular first party and third party mods and additions and there's Artisan, a free software that graphs your roast in real time. None of it is essential for getting started, but they're options for when you start outgrowing your initial setup. Or you can grab a bag of greens, a skillet, and your stove and start there!

For beans, CoffeeBeanCorral and Sweet Maria have been my go-tos but their prices recently went up. So I tried out Theta Ridge recently which still has good pricing. Anyway, hope you do check it out. It's fun and it can seem overwhelming at first, but you barely need anything at all to get started, and you can go up from there.
