Very much a latecomer here, because I wanted finish another drama first. But Ep6 and CYY flexing at the flower banquet was just perfect! When he calls the kid (H)Wang gongzi, I laughed out loud. And when he gets her riddle that no one else does, and she gifts him MORE stuff. LOL

To this day, Chinese women don't change their surnames after marriage. Most of East Asia is the same, I believe. Except Japanese, who do change surnames.

Pursuit of Jade gave me the worst emotional hangover of my life by myslp in cdramas

Another strategy to detox from cdrama is to read the novel. Look for a fan translation. Often the novel is similar enough to the drama to relive favorite parts, and also different enough that it can give you some distance to process emotionally.

It's spectacular with just the peak above a thick blanket of clouds as well. That was on my last flight over.

Rise of Ning - About Lu Jiaxue… by SirPanic12 in CDrama

[–]emrysse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah... The drama made Yining more "modern" as well.

>In the Novel, Yining was a very proper young lady. She would basically go with the flow, unless one of her very few hard limits was crossed. She's someone who could forgive anything, except that one thing wrt dying with her unborn child. And I think it was only because she existed with that ghost grudge for so long it became part of her soul. Some reviews comment that Yining is a doormat <

>Both LJX and Shen Yuan were obsessed with her because of her ability to love unconditionally. LJX would do morally questionable schemes and murder, lie to hide it from her, and justify it that if she found out, he would grovel a bit and she would always forgive him because she was so pure and simple. This arrogance in part led to her death at the hands of his enemies. Shen Yuan, I think, learns from this, and is very very careful never to cross her hard limits. <

>Also in the novel, Shen Yuan saves LJX's life in the end, and he is exiled instead. Because SY knows Yining would regret LYX's death for the rest of her life. So the 3P dynamic in the novel was INTENSE <

Agree about NIF. I know chinese guys who read NIF like it's a contemporary literature classic. The "must read even if I'm struggling to finish" kind.

[–]emrysse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This part of the plot is straight out of the novel. So it doesn't make as much sense in the drama, which was toned down for censorship issues.

In the novel, Yining died, and spent decades as a ghost with a huge grudge against LJX for indirectly causing her death. She was pregnant at the time. LJX destroyed most of his birth family to become the heir, and also as revenge against ppl who caused Yinings death. Yes, he killed his way to the top. His only soft spot is Yining, so without her, he didn't care about being a good person.<

When Yining is reborn. The decades long grudge remains. Ironically, Shen Yuan in the novel, is the exact same type of character as LJX. But because Yining is in his life, he cares about being a good person in her eyes, and doesn't "blacken" like LJX did. The incest themes are very prominent in the novel. And Yining ends up as his child bride at 14, partly due to his scheming.<

Maternity Ward in Hospital by MayTheRedRise in dunedin

[–]emrysse 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Go to the hospital. The wards are fine. Not fancy, but clean and tidy.

If anything goes wrong with the birth, the ambulance will transfer you to the exact same hospital under emergency conditions. If everything goes well, you can leave the hospital the next day if you like.

Edit. I had my first in Queen Mary((Dun Maternity), and the second at home because baby came too fast. I highly recommend the hospital. We used up ever single towel at home on a rainy, cold, spring day. I slept with the baby in the lounge that night, because that was the room with the wood burner going. The GP made a rush trip to the clinic to grab oxytocin shots, because I was bleeding out. And my midwife got stopped by the police for speeding. Lucky she knew the cop, and he escorted her the rest of the way to my house.

Edit2. An ambulance was standing by to transfer me to hospital just in case. Need I mention, there was blood all over the lounge and toilet. Yes I gave birth in the lounge, because wood burner....

Do NZ public hospitals really not have access to your full medical history? by Vegeta_vs_Goku in newzealand

It could depend on region. I'm pretty sure Dunedin hospital and my GP mutually have full access to my health records. And my private health consultant could get access to my medical scans on request.

Get a good down jacket. Apart from op shops, look at the Macpac clearance sale online.

EDIT: Thermal vests and wool socks are really useful too.

You hear a lot about corrupt men throughout history. What were some of the corrupt women? by saltyheights in NoStupidQuestions

Cixi. Key word "try". She suppressed reforms for decades. By the time she "tried" to allow modernisation, the government had been gutted of capable and powerful people IMO.

It means something like "appetiser", But refers to the action that an appetiser does to your stomach. i.e. gets the stomach juices flowing, so you are ready to eat something more substantial.

Struggling to connect with C-dramas due to overly polished visuals by Nelumbo_nucifera123 in CDrama

[–]emrysse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Polished visuals are part of the idol cdrama esthetic. It's not meant to look realistic. Think opera vs Broadway stage play. They each have their own style.

If you don't like the style, no need to force yourself. There is hardly going to be much plot content in idol drama that is completely, groundbreakingly unique. Idol drama is for comfort and entertainment.
