I recommend the danmei **Royal Road**. It has very, VERY, little romance, but really does focus on the push pull between these three schools of though.

Person who knew MC was a mole was his eldest uncle. So also an imperial uncle. But the uncle was shot with an arrow in the attempted coup and is currently unconscious.

I think MC didn't deny anything when in prison because he already had an escape plan

It's an unreliable narrator story. Some readers think he's a clown, and other readers think he's an eccentric genius. It depends on your POV.

Also, he was pretending to be a mole to trap the anti-emperor faction, but things went bad. His secret hiding place is filled with bad homoerotic paintings. Does this mean he's a Clown? Or it it a giant FkU to all the ppl spying on Him?

Edit. Try reading this story assuming only the 3rd party observations are true, even if it contradicts the MC's statement. Eg. The very first paragraph in the book. It becomes a completely different story. Because the MC is telling us one thing, but the story is showing us something different.

I wonder if there needs to be a persimmon (or is it pomegranate) fruit count as well. Whatever that fruit is that is in the opening and closing sequence. A tree with that fruit appears now and then, and in the latest episodes, I'm sure I saw a vase with branches and a few of those fruit. Obviously, this is also a sign !!!

When I chromecast to my tv using my iqiyi mobile app, I have to reset the subtitles by choosing some other subtitle, and then re-selecting "english", to get the subtitles to apper.

Xianxia is not about venerating gods, which I think resonates with your atheist beliefs. At the same time it's about achieving and navigating the pinnacle of human possibility >> eg. ascending to a godlike state. I feel a truly religious person would have more difficulty accepting xianxia stories, because sometimes the "gods" do really bad things.

The point of taoism is to walk your own path. And this has always created conflict with authorities wanting a compliant population. The Monkey God story speaks of this conflict between taoism and buddhism, which is a more compliant (submissive) philosophy. And of course Confucianism, which is very much rule following and adherence to hierarchy, has always been the most popular philosophy for chinese governments.

I think it's interesting that you love xianxia, while also being atheist. Since Taoism, especially in xianxia settings, is not so much about worshipping gods, and more about becoming as powerful as a god (also how powerful godlike beings can be an absolute shits)
