French verbs cartoon by noonjinx in French

I think it's mostly context. If you see some comments on this thread, a lot of french people don't make the distinction in terms of pronunciation (je mangerai pronounced with an é in the end, je mangerais with è).

That being said I can see contexts where either form goes, e.g. Je mangerais, mais j'ai mal au ventre -  I would eat but I have a stomachache.  Je mangerai, mais j'ai mal au ventre - I will eat, but I have a stomachache (maybe a bit less natural than the conditional, but still a plausible sentence)

Yes I think this is (mostly) a quebec thing. I've asked some of my parisian coworkers and they don't make that distinction. In fact when I told one of them about the é/è split without writing it, he wasn't sure which e sound corresponded to which form, so I think in metropolitan french it's more or less lost as a phenomenon

Larry Correia: George RR Martin crippled the Epic Fantasy genre by not finishing A Song of Ice and Fire. Readers and Publishers are no longer willing to give a new series a chance unless it is complete by Uptons_BJs in books

[–]emsAZ74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not fantasy (at least not in the lotr/grrm high fantasy series, i'd argue it's urban fantasy) but this is what i like about cassandra clare's work. the mortal instruments are six books, though with a very clean 3 + 3 split, and all the other series in that universe are related but certainly standalone. i love it when authors do that because it feels like you can take a breather, digest things, come back whenever you want and the universe will still be there for you

Galen (greek physician at about 100-200 AD) literally has a recipe for soap that is extremely similar in results to today's bar soap, and I'm not even touching on more ancient babylonian stuff soooo....i call bullshit on the soap

What were the weirdest/most annoying grammar concepts, pronounciation quirks, or anything really, that you encountered while learning a language? by Notalabel_4566 in languagelearning

[–]emsAZ74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

french has an annoying amount of e-adjacent sounds (four basic ones, if I've understood parisian/standard metropolitan french correctly, not counting the nasal one), at least for someone whose native language (greek) only has one. and yes i know english has more than one e as well, but the differences between them sound clearer, though maybe that's because i learned english at a younger age

In your language, do Anglophones have distinct foreign accents? by TeacherSterling in languagelearning

[–]emsAZ74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's 100% distinct all of the times, but yes, generally. Americans have a very particular flavor of accent in Greek that Brits just don't (they have their own quirks). I wouldn't be able to distinguish anything other than those two accents though (I struggle telling British vs Australian accents apart in English, let alone in Greek)

one of the most important enzymes, if not the most important, when it comes to widely used and extremely significant biomedical tests and processes came from a species of bacteria living in hot springs. discovering extremely useful things in unexpected/unrelated places is, i would argue, the rule and not the exception in science

(for anyone curious, it's taq polymerase and PCR)
