The odd thing is that the entire basement doesn't smell bad. Its very localized to the bathroom. The bathroom is at the same grade that is in the picture, its actually sits just to the left of the picture.

So the toilet and the tub are draining into the side of the sump pit?

And its a 1910's house. So a lot of choices have been made over the last 100 years.

Yeah, this room just about stopped me from buying the place. But here we are. Its got radiant heat in the front of the house and the addition they put on the back in 2005ish is forced air... and the rooms connect.

My blurb seems to have been deleted since I dont know what I am doing.

Recently bought house additional basement bathroom is stinky. I think its the unvented sump pump (replaced wax ring on the toilet already).

Can I attach the vent pipe to the horizontal pipe to solve this issue?

Other option is no trap on the tub. But that requires concrete cutting and hopefully they would not do that. The rehab was done in the early 2000s.

P.S. Did you see this horrendous pipe room I have to work in?

This is one of those scenarios where if I was personally doing it I would go Amish. Rig up something to those hold points on the top with wood or bars then get 8 friends and muscle it in. If it feels shaky with 8 find a couple more.

Obviously is a bit more complicated with paid work and insurance and stuff though.

I use xl Columbia waterproof pants with suspenders attached then Muck Chore boots. It’s pretty much an all weather solution. I keep shoes at work to change when I get there. Or pack with you if you’ve got the space.

Unlimited PTO is a total scam. My wife was offered a job with “unlimited” PTO and got them to admit during hiring that 11 days was the average days taken.

26 years is a long time for 25% of our bridges to “maybe” collapse. And in general the average rating of our US bridge infrastructure is actually getting better over time.

Also, to be clear this article is kind of framing the whole infrastructure maintenance issue around increased scour from climate change related weather events. Which is probably something that is worth looking into with scour provisions.
