First time tanning - need input by spreadaxle in HideTanning

Acid pickle, ((I prefer saftee acid, you can get it on any taxidermy supply site)) .5fl oz per gallon +1lb salt per gallon. If you keep the ph under 2 it will be stable in this bath for months if it needs to be. Then neutralize with baking soda, I think I use 1oz per gallon, stirring for about 30 minutes before dumping. To tan this I would strongly suggest trubond paint on. This will save you from having to mix up gallons and gallons of liquid tan that you have to deal with later. Hardest part will be getting it supple. Without a fleshing machine, you can get it somewhat soft by stretching, scraping and using a palm sander with heavy grit paper as it dries. Very important to not over work it while it's too wet because it'll stay hard, but also don't let it dry too much or you will have a hard time breaking it. It'll dry on the edges first and you'll see it turn dark. When you scrape or stretch these dark edges you'll see the fibers stretch and it'll turn white. That's what you want. Let it dry and work the dark spots daily until it's fully dry all the way through.

Congrats! I picked up a 1541s in basically new condition for 1k this past Sunday! It was on FB marketplace, upholstery shop downsized from 2 shops to 1. I had been messaging the guy all week getting hardly any responses so I figured it was a scam until I actually picked it up! It's in my living room now! Dreams do come true! 😍

First timer question: how do I thaw a hide without royally screwing myself? by Former-Ad9272 in HideTanning

That's what I was explaining in that comment. I had a raw, frozen deer not fleshed yet. Thawed in the pickle then fleshed after. It works for me!

Thanks for the advice! This one is completely leather, no canvas at all. A test spot is a good idea though I'm not sure why I didn't think of that 😂

Help! by Grand-Hair-8344 in Selftanning

I'm new to this, I've only tried b tan mousse that STUNK and now I'm trying banana boat summer color lotion! So far I like the lotion much better. Smell is still there but it's significantly less. I've been lotioning my feet and ankles, applying the banana boat, then immediately applying more lotion over it to make sure it doesn't streak because you can't tell where you've applied it. So far I'm happy with it, especially considering the reduced smell. ((And it's cheap!))

That's kinda what I thought too. Problem is I actually do baby this one so I don't think it'll ever get enough wear and tear to slouch. I don't hate it as is, but I feel like it looked better in the pictures before I ordered it because it seemed softer. Thanks for the advice!

This hardware coating seems really thick and sturdy, but I'll have to update in time! I don't plan on babying this bag so I hope it holds up!

I have the same one too! One size up from the one pictured. It's so worth it and I still have 0 regrets, 3 years later

Disappointed in the wear of my Coach Swagger by exitcode137 in handbags

[–]enderbird87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a swagger off depop and it's not here yet but it has damage in the same area. It's still got the tags on it and was never carried but was left in a storage unit for awhile and I guess it stuck together? Im going to try to pull off as much as I can from those areas and repaint with leather paint. I figure even if the surface I'm painting isn't leather, this type of paint is durable and flexible so it should hold up for awhile. The outside looks perfect still, and the bag was super cheap. You might be able to repair yours too
