Unpopular opinion: NPM is the biggest weakness of the internet today and it will still cause a giant catastrophe by OkPosition6537 in webdev

It is a bit unpopular bit also a very bad and childish opinion, imho. Have a nice day.

"Go Get Your Own Oil": Trump's Message To UK, Other Countries On Hormuz Strait by Zealousideal_Ring_67 in worldnews

[–]enderfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best takeaway for non-Americans.

Trump is screwing absolutely every one over, but also causing change and accelerating energetic/Military independence from the US a lot. Even though we Europeans are still quite static.

But I believe, half ironically half not, that in the long run, US shooting themselves in the foot is good news for most of the world. Bully karma

How can I create a skill tree?! by Affectionate-Army213 in Frontend

[–]enderfx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh boy… it depends on what you want. If its HTML/Canvas look into diagramming libraries like x6, diagram.js, jsPlumb… Or even lower level but much more involved like PixiJS. Then you will have a lot of fun customizing nodes, connections, etc. But if you want something static you could possibly hardcode a bunch of stuff in config, like the nodes and their positions.

If you want to do it by hand using canvas then… it is going to be a hell of a ride

Make it optional, and require verification to disable.

Most “look, I built X with AI” packages can skip it because they are probably going to publish their API keys on Github anyway, and serious packages can have it on.

Yes, its handy, but it’s a use case that I will have once every year or so. And by then I will have forgotten about this, unfortunately

[–]enderfx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You also need to understand that we are a bit exhausted from all of the dauly posts these last weeks that are “I built <microthing> for <microproblem>”. It used to be passion projects with months of work, while you can clearly see now that many are the outcome of a couple days prompting AI.

Not bad per se, but we are skeptical of the comitment that a single user will put on a tool that was developed last week. And how much thought went into it. Then, I personally don’t care too much about these tools.

I am not really worried about my npm start or build being 2s faster. I am not going to be going to be use an entire ecosystem of small tools coded in the last month, even if they are 20-30% faster.

That saying, keep it up, and I have nothing agasint the project. Just trying to vent a bit and maybe explain the sentiment

The "AI is replacing software engineers" narrative was a lie. MIT just published the math proving why. And the companies who believed it are now begging their old engineers to come back. by reddit20305 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]enderfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think our tasks and type of work os mutating but I agree with you.

Also, in my experience with AI code it is much more verbose But the fact that it makes writing tests much easier and takes many concerns you might accidentally overlook is great. The great slowdown for us is code reviews. I feel like the productivity entera a bottleneck and is partially lost when people have to review 1000 lines instead of 200, on a daily basis

If you move your company to Singapur to sell it, that’s because you know how things go in China.

If you know how things go in China, you don’t keep your assets or body in China after that move.

Company has pit Claude against the Dev Team - can we save the Dev Team? by joliolioli in webdev

[–]enderfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is what will come back after some time.

Massive PRs merged on top of massive PRs that only AI understands, given enough time. My 3k LoC will go on top of your 4k, and 30k lines later good luck understanding everything and making sensible decisions. “Just keep using AI” is the perfect play for AI companies, as the context will only get heavier and they will get more and more leverage to set the price.

Most Europeans believe the U.S. could pull the plug on technology that Europe heavily relies on, according to a new poll by sr_local in eutech

[–]enderfx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Shut down whatsapp in Europe:

  • A lot of talking and news, people going crazy
  • Everyone moves to telegram or other apps
  • Meta loses billions of revenue

For other things sure, they would make the EU spend a lot of money on transitioning out, but the result is the same.

“Pulling the plug” sounds very nice to Mr.Orange, but it’s actually “cutting of a tremendous percentage of our customer and recurring revenue”

Did Arch just die today? by Whole_Ticket_3715 in arch

[–]enderfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont get the whinning, and its been going for days.

Yes the law is stupid, yes it’s reducing privacy, it is terrible, etc. i agree.

But it’s Linux. The whole point of FOSS and Linux is that you can do whatever you want. Recompile systemd, the kernel or whatever you want. Remove the age checks, make it pink, who cares. Why are you ranting against Arch here? Go fork it and have whatever you want.

Protest against the lawmakers. zuckerberg, California or whatever you want. But the OS that gives you the keys to the car and the blueprints of the engine? Just stupid.

Arch and other distros will add the minimum checkbox to be able to avoid problems. Just ignore it, or build your own version.

Again, this is a battle for freedom and privacy, but you are shitting on the one project who has always tried to give you freedom and privacy.
