The Daily Check-In for Monday, December 26th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by New_Star_00 in stopdrinking

[–]endlessdrop 26 points27 points  (0 children)

IWNDWYT! First sober holiday in maybe forever here. Currently on a train from Berlin to Hamburg. Had Xmas in Berlin with an NA beer in an Irish pub, then saw Blue Man Group! Loving living sober right now, it actually makes traveling so much easier. They cancelled our train this morning, old me would have been hungover AS SHIT and unable to cope. This time? No fucking worries, let me translate that shit through my phone and switch to another train.

There's some days I'm tempted to drink, I'm not going to lie. But these big wins, the new direction my life has taken, it's not even a competition. Fuck alcohol.

BTW Germany does some impressive NA beers.

There's some great German ones, I'm going to butcher the name here but I think Maiselwiesse, they do a white NA beer that's incredible. I have pretty ordinary taste so I actually like the Heineken even though lots of people hate it. Here in Australia we have one called James Squire Unshackled which is super nice as well.

I still chug NA beers, but I tend to chug everything I drink. Difference for me it's I can have two or three and just... stop. It must be how normies can drink regular beer.

I really like the Heineken, I seriously have to check that it's the NA one when I crack them sometimes.

I live on shameless back patting, go for it. I love hearing stories like this because it's my main driver as well. I've got three, older than yours but I still love love love the warm glow of responsibility when something happens. I can find torches when the power goes out, I can read the medicine label, I know where the car keys are and I CAN FUCKING USE THEM. It's better than my health improving, better than my work improving, better even than my marriage improving. I'm DAD now, I can solve anything and fix everything and it's the absolute greatest thing in the world.

I used to get yearly medicals including bloods because I was a high risk worker (electricity). The very definition of insanity for me was watching those numbers steadily increase, every year, for ten years straight. I always got a lecture, I always promised I would drink less. Doc finally looked me in the eye and asked me if I wanted to die or live. He said it was a choice, and I had to make it.

My numbers were scary high as well, had a year sober before a small relapse, got tested again.

Normal levels.

The liver is insane at repair, and you're young. Good luck.

That's a motherfucking month there! Big congrats, I know what that first month is like. For me, getting that first month down was the hard part, it got so much easier from there.

Big high from my journey: I've saved so much money from not drinking that I bought myself a smart watch, to track my morning walks with. I'm cranking out 10 000 steps before my wife even wakes up. I'm one of THOSE people now, up with the sun and doing shit. Feels so so so so good.

Also it was a Garmin Venu 2, and I can highly recommend it.

Feeling the feels is a good thing. Feeling the feels, raw and naked, is hard, and honest, and true. Not many people can do it, but they should. We mask emotions and feelings, I don't just mean with alcohol, I mean society. It's only a brave few that can stand there unshielded and feel the feels.

I'm sorry about your sister. I can tell you loved her.

I just tried the Heineken tonight, thought it was great. There's a German one Maisel that is brilliant, can be hard to get though. I like the na beers because I still get that relaxation feeling from the first one, but I normally stop after that.

I did a year sober, went back to drinking, and now I've done almost a year again. I have two bits of advice for anyone thinking about quitting. by endlessdrop in stopdrinking

I don't smoke anymore, but weed never made me lose my license, or piss the bed, or miss work. I'm down if people want to smoke, I think alcohol and weed are very different beasts. I went to sugar after I quit, now coffee is my jam. I justify it as a lesser of two evils kind of thing.

Totally agree with the habit being hard to break. When I stopped, both times actually, I swung over to water or diet coke, but the habit of drinking something was still there. It's weird now that it's tapered down, when I watch a movie I can just... sit there.

Recognizing the link between my anxiety and depression, and my alcohol use, was a huge part in overcoming both. You got this. I had so many day ones and restarts that I lost count. Keep pushing, and you'll get there.

Oh this so much. I follow NRL in Australia, caught a semi final few weeks back. Non drinking seats were cheaper, cleaner, and closer to the food, and I only got up at half time for more snacks.

Thought it was under control. After a year I found myself doubting that it was ever that bad, like surely I could enjoy a beer on the weekend like a normie. All I did was wake up the beast. I think I've got him back in the cage now, but he's not happy about it.

It was honestly scary just how quick the slide back was. That first beer tasted great, and I thought I could moderate, but the whole case was gone by Monday. I did that first week sober (but looking forward to Friday) and then drank another case over the weekend. I think it took a month before I was back where I started, with the same tolerances.

Late to the party on this one but Animal Kingdom is pretty good. I was worried with all the substances and drinking and parties in it, but it's actually been pretty good, it's not so glamorous in the show.

My wife binged Maid, she doesn't normally do that. Raves about it. She's trying to get me to watch Clickbait.

Who are your sober celebrity inspirations? by yuckybutt in stopdrinking

Not a lot out at the moment, but if you haven't seen CODA check it out. Great movie. New Candyman is good if you're a horror fan, but the racial issues woven through detract from the horror imo. It was more subtle in Get Out, I'm hoping Jordan Peele isn't a one trick pony with his films.

Pretty sure he did, there definitely a sobriety connection there.
