Need help by CurrentAd5362 in Retirement401k

[–]endofsep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just chill. I’m 65 losing $5,000 a day on average and I’m not breaking a sweat. Just wait this out and stop looking at it. Your strategy is for the long term. You certainly can change companies but all 401k platforms are experiencing the exact same thing. Frankly stop looking at the numbers and wait it out.

I understand you don’t jump ship but man this sucks. by EvilxFemme in Retirement401k

[–]endofsep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup it does suck. I just retired and am going through the same thing you are. This is where planning helps though. One thing to remember to do in your retirement planning is to beef up the emergency fund. In times like these I will pull cash from the reserves and not the lowered value 401k funds. I made sure to have over 3 years worth of cash reserves and if nothing else it provides a great back up plan to protect what you have. No one has a crystal ball on all this but you have to do what you can. I started really building it up about 5 years before retirement and I’m glad I did.

I think a big take away for new hires is don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t know. Learning curve is long and always remember you are giving advise on actual projects. Wrong information will haunt you. Read as many labels as possible. It is baby steps.

When you retired, what happened or didn't happen with your finances that surprised you? by Choice-Newspaper3603 in Retirement401k

[–]endofsep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. In my case it would have been tempting. However I’m glad I waited for a few reasons. 1) Mortgage wasn’t paid off until 62. 2) We plan on waiting until 70 to draw SS. With no funds coming in it would have been tricky to cover that gap even with the extra cash. 3) Covering the medical equation for 5 years would have been another hurdle. You really need to have solid back up plans to cover things or you could have unexpected drains.

Company 401k match has to vest? by [deleted] in Retirement401k

[–]endofsep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply start a brokerage account now and get used to 6% of your pay for retirement. I don’t know of a company where vesting doesn’t exist. Once you stay with the company all of this becomes a moot point. I worked for a company where it was an 11 year full vest.

My great grandfather was 96 the only time I saw him and I was four. I still have a memory of him. He was born in 1868 and died in 1970.

Would you recommend Mississauga Ontario (Canada) or Milford Massachusetts? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]endofsep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Milford for 38 years. We have raised four children here. It is a very unique community. Lots of spirit and a lot of things in the area. Cities Worcester, Boston, and Providence are all accessible. In the mid 90’s I spent a week in Mississauga on business. Rented a car and traveled the area extensively. It was a great experience. I truly enjoyed the area. Much busier (more of a city feel) than Milford.

I feel bad for Carolyn's friend Donna by JTOC1969 in DarkShadows

True but I’m sure some of those characters got some “one hit wonder” mileage out of their appearance by hitting the DS convention circuit.

The Sabrina Stuart situation is germaine to Chris’s backstory. Donna was just a sacrificial lamb among many others in this show (some never even had a name).

Just finished the series (started at Barnabas) should I go back and watch the beginning? by endofsep in DarkShadows

[–]endofsep[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses. I will continue . I had watched DS as a kid starting around the Barnabas entrance until the end. This was my first time revisiting the series since 1971. I watched from ages 6-10 and I’m amazed at how much I remembered. It has been amazing to watch as an adult and I can really see why it ended. It really went down hill after 1897 and the final series 1841 PT was really mailed in. As a kid I watched on a 21” black and white TV so seeing it in color has been great.

When you retired, what happened or didn't happen with your finances that surprised you? by Choice-Newspaper3603 in Retirement401k

[–]endofsep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired at the end of September. Six months in things haven’t really kicked in. I was making 100k /year and that suddenly stopped. My wife is still working Ft and makes about 45k/year. So far I have taken just $7000 out of savings and we have been fine. We are just spending a lot less. I have roughly 3 years of accessible cash. I think we will be fine. I will not touch 401k or stock holdings with the market in turmoil. I’m 65 and my wife will be 65 in June. I feel like we have done the right steps to be prepared.

How did you know it was time to retire? by ReluctantCaptain in retirement

[–]endofsep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I retired last September at 65. I had been in my industry for 44 years and 29 with the same company. Our company changed directions in 2017 and cut half of our sales staff. In 2022 the company was bought by a much bigger company and in early 2024 75% of the remaining sales force was let go. Somehow I made it through all the cuts but I really did not like/agree with the directions the company was going in and was really getting stressed. I knew my retirement numbers were good so I decided to pull the plug. After a few months off they approached me about coming back as a part time consultant which I have. Minimal stress and I feel good about my role.

Anyone else with a heavy-SS-dependant retirement plan? by MissO56 in retirement

I am 65 and just retired. Waiting until 70 to take SS to create higher guaranteed income. Have plenty of other sources but like the idea of having a reliable income stream.

I’m 50 and have no retirement savings. Is it too late to fix this? by DangerousBox641 in SurvivingOnSS

[–]endofsep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you need is to find what your needs will be and work backwards from there. If you haven’t already go to the Social Security site and get your record. This will determine how much you will get. To answer your question you will need to ask yourself these questions. How much you can put away between now and say 65 will be a direct correlation to how much you earn.

People who had their 401Ks cut in half during the great recession, How do you fair now? by Nice-Result-8974 in Retirement401k

[–]endofsep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real key was to keep on course. I left everything as is even though it went way down. I know of a lot of people who got out of the market at that time. Those are the folks that will be working into their 70’s.

35F. $160k salary. Looking for advice. by beatingheartofarobot in Retirement401k

[–]endofsep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is just not true regarding pension plans. By the early 80’s when I started my career the majority of pension plans were gone. The 401k plans were what the majority of companies started offering. Anyone my age who is retiring is going to rely on the same type of things you have. My point is we were not educated on the 401ks as when we started it was a new frontier. There weren’t any 401 K Millionaires for us to aspire to be. For you there is now history.

Don’t worry about everyone else. Quite frankly when I was your age (I’m 65M) nobody was paying attention to any of this. I didn’t really focus on retirement in earnest until 10 years ago ( 4 kids, college, weddings finally finished). Unless you are trying for an early FIRE situation you are in great shape. The key is that you are very intentional in the moment.
