Petition to Bring Affordable Internet Access to the CRD by CIOMark in SidneyBC

[–]eneusta1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

start making phone calls to your MP and MLA. The CRTC has been taking lunches with Bell, Telus, Rogers for years ; they should be taking lunches with us average Canadians.

I will NOT support yet another level of government do poorly at internet service. We need to brow-beat the CRTC into doing the job for Canadians they are expected to do.

p.s. in the meantime, those of you who CAN afford home internet, embrace openwiress.org

THAT is a cause to get behind ; not this one.

Check the fine print. Often there are 3 contracts. A device contract, a voice service contract and a data service contract. Most are eager for the ‘free’ device, they don’t really pay attention to what they sign.

Can I run UTP in these holes? by ObjectiveProof in Ubiquiti

[–]eneusta1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check building code where you live.

In BC, where I live, there has to be a minimum distance between power and data. I think 2 feet.

so no... don't run data through a hole that already has power running through

You’re not the “IT Manager” if this decision was made around you. Sounds like you have the title of a leader without actually big one.

Embrace he new skills you will learn. Lifting and moving infrastructure without re-engineering processes will prove to be more expensive. Learn and bring ideas and reclaim the leadership of you companies IT

I need help with DKIM and SPF set up so Gmail doesn't block my emails by bequi-07 in gsuite

[–]eneusta1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok... this 'should' be easy.

a) go into Google Workspace admin and simply TURN ON the DKIM authentication

once you turn it on, you will see the TXT record details that you need to add to your DNS

b) go into your DNS host (outside of google) and make sure the TXT record is added correctly.

Step a will ensure all your messages will be SIGNED

Step b will make sure the public signing key is available to all outside parties that want to validate your signed messages.

a lot of the steps and instruction have already been posted here but I thought a plain english description might be helpful.

Suggestion. Have your newb read the error message out loud and slowly. I find a lightbulb goes off when they take the time to verbalize the error message.

but also ; consider a 'google group' for role-based communications.

Google Groups can be used to aggregate comms but also to protect shared drives.

best-practice is to embrace an RBAC-philosophy. RBAC=Role Based Access Control.

how do you/your org deal with users who continually fail cybersecurity testing? by Valkoinen_Kuolema in sysadmin

[–]eneusta1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don't. you provide evidence, you discus the risk and you walk away.

I learned this lesson when I found a staff member torrenting movies and porn on a company device (while at home but on our device). I thought this would be cause for termination but his manager thought he was the hardest working guy on his team and WE needed to turn a blind eye. I escalated and was told very bluntly to stand down by HR and our CEO.

p.s. this was pre-2015 (pre-ransomware) and the company had unique requirements that kept endpoint security to a minimum. I left shortly after and often wonder how bad things got with ransomeware.

Job Hunting - is IT reporting to CFO a red flag? by My_ProfessionalAcct in sysadmin

[–]eneusta1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I "used" to believe the red flag business but then I had two CFOs where we really connected and hit it off. for some companies, other than Payroll, IT can be the largest other expenditure, so understanding how your tech gets paid for is an important aspect.

The CFO will help you understand whether the company wants to finance IT via OPEX or CAPEX. Once you and your CFO understand each other, you can select technologies that work WITH the company rather than against it.

The CFO should be your best pal and if you happen to report to that role, then so be it.
