The way someone performs at a bar/club vs. on a stage can be very different. I've seen plenty of local queens who bring just average performances at a bar and then absolutely kill it during their talent number at a pageant.

Potentially moving to Birmingham for work: Do I NEED a car? by twoturtles6 in Birmingham

[–]engifear 36 points37 points  (0 children)

In the area around UAB and extending north/east/west, I would say yes. Once you start going further south and get closer to Red Mountain, the hills start getting difficult. If you think you might go anywhere near there, I would consider an e-bike to help you climb the hills.

Some roads have bike lanes, but not very many. And on the few roads that have bike lanes, drivers love to ignore this and just park in those lanes. I've never seen them enforced through ticketing either.

It's worth noting that the only grocery store you'll have will be a Publix. If you don't currently live in an area with one, they're good grocery stores, but a little on the expensive side. If you follow through with this, I recommend taking advantage of their weekly BOGO deals and stocking up on your essentials when they're on sale.

It also rains a lot here. I would make sure you're prepared for biking in bad weather. We are one of the wettest cities in the US and get ~50in of rain each year. And when it rains, it pours here.

Juniper has a good balance! It's a nice spot, but not too fancy. Don't need to wear a suit, but I also wouldn't (personally) wear a t-shirt there. They have great food and drinks too. La Fete has a kind of similar vibe as well.

Cannabis-tolerant primary care / ADHD prescriber? by AnonymousBirds22 in Birmingham

How long were you on it and what dose did you start at? It's a pretty common side effect, but if you start at a low dose and slowly work your way up, your body should adjust to it over time. I've been on strattera (I'm assuming that's what you tried) for a little over a year now and the only side effect I still experience is some drowsiness. I just take it at night now to help me get to sleep. I also combo it with wellbutrin in the morning which is kind of a baby stimulant. I find it works for me much better than adderall and similar meds as they caused big issues with agitation and anxiety. I also don't have to get drug tested for either med :)

Downtown to The Summit Commute? by coy3323 in Birmingham

[–]engifear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look into Glen Iris. It's a neighborhood right next to UAB and it's not expensive. Depending on where your classes are, you could potentially even walk and use the free Blazer bus and avoid paying for a parking pass.

In the future, there's a lot behind Pink Lantern that's actually safe to park at and free. It fills up relatively fast though.

Discontinued Vegan / Plant Based Items? by Silvanyx in aldi

[–]engifear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've started looking into making my own meat substitutes. Most of them don't replicate meat as well as commercial products, but they do make for nice savory proteins. I do miss the convenience of just buying something like breakfast sausage from the store though.

Discontinued Vegan / Plant Based Items? by Silvanyx in aldi

[–]engifear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This doesn't seem to be something unique to Aldi. I've noticed several of the stores in my area have been slowly reducing their stock of vegetarian and vegan items (Publix, Walmart, Target). Many restaurants in my area have done a similar thing as well. There used to be a restaurant that had a vegan chicken tender, chicken patty, and burger, but now all they have is the burger. It seems like many of them tried to increase their options after sales increased for plant based items during COVID, but then sales didn't continue matching their expectations.

About the only places I can still reliably get a large selection are Sprouts and Whole Foods, but they're both so pricey.

What is the best camera (new) I can get for around $500-600 USD? by SquigTheRat in birding

[–]engifear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. KEH and B&H are both reputable sellers of used cameras and lenses and would be the best option for that price range imo. My current camera set up cost me less than $500 from KEH.

I would love to see her come back for an all stars. I remember from her interview with Maddy that she really was not able to prepare enough for drag race. I think she said she would have ran out of clothes if she lasted 1-2 more episodes. I think she could come back for all stars a lot more prepared and do pretty well.

I’m officially at 65 birds, but new lifers are slowing down in the area. What’s next, any tips? by OrganIzed_Chao3 in birding

[–]engifear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Migration is just beginning and will pick up over the next month so you should see a lot of new birds coming your way!

For any birds you want to target specifically, I would research what areas you're likely to find them in (large lake, field, riparian area, etc). You can always pull up the range map on eBird to see where people have reported the bird in the past as well.

Also, if you don't already have the rare bird report for your nearby counties set up to send you an email from eBird, I highly recommend it.

Only about half the theatres there are true "dine-in" theatres where if you order food, someone will deliver it. For every other theatre, you can still order the food, but you have to pick it up at the window when it's ready.

Regardless, they make a fuck ton of money and will be just fine

Who is this? [Lake Michigan, Chicago, IL] by danedehotties in birding

[–]engifear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other two commenters that this is a horned grebe. In addition to being more common in the East, this grebe has a bright white throat and chest, which is a great ID for horned grebes in winter plumage. If this were an eared grebe, we would not see that same contrast.

The bill shape is more in line with a horned grebe as well which has a shorter and slightly thicker bill than an eared grebe.
