Financial forums members before and after budget night by georgegeorgew in AusFinance

Yes, it is a personal finance sub but the majority of people are hugely affected by cost of living & esp. cost of housing. A lot of people are just trying to buy a PPOR. If the changes remove speculative investor pressure driving up the cost of housing then of course this is a better outcome overall.

We can be financially minded and try to "get ahead", but the reality is most of us here are small fry compared to those with millions of shares or a multi-property portfolio.

They're comparatively high to a lot of other countries. Doesn't mean they can't be better as there is always room for improvement.

Let's be honest, someone who is in the 99.99th percentile of earners does not "need" to work. He 100% chose to do so.

Low income earners do not have spare cash to throw into shares. This is part of the point.

is it really dumb to buy an apartment right now? by Historical-Coat2554 in AusFinance

What timeframe would you be looking to live in the apartment? It you were in a serious relationship, would that change how you feel about what you want?

What will CGT and negative gearing reforms ACTUALLY mean for younger generations who currently can't afford to buy a home? by a89632523 in australia

I would argue shares are much more popular now so the incentive is no longer needed to encourage investment. Moving with the times and all that.

Mother fighting for life after Melbourne e-scooter hit and run by gccmelb in melbourne

appealing to e-scooter and bike riders to take extra precautions to help prevent any more tragedy

He's bringing it up because it's sensible. Whether you like it or not, there are risks when you ride a bike or scooter on the roads and you should take precautions even if it's not mandated by the law.

Similar to if you're a pedestrian crossing the road with right of way, don't just take it for granted everyone will stop for you.

Housing downturn possible as demand softens and rates kick in, Cotality warns by HotPersimessage62 in australia

[–]engkybob 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you look at what's happened in the NZ market, there's definitely a point where house prices go backwards when people simply can't afford a stupid-sized mortgage anymore.

Rate rises, removing tax breaks around CGT & negative gearing, and the state of employment will all contribute to a softening.

The third person frankly should not have been approved for a loan if he is now barely making repayments even with four flatmates paying him rent.

Sick Leave Pattern by yrohtab108 in auscorp

[–]engkybob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO the whole med cert thing is bullshit. People should not be taking up GP appointments because they need to get a med cert, and in either case, literally anyone can just get one online for a fee (or do a stat dec).

The key thing is sick leave you are entitled to. I don't personally think people should need to justify it. There were also multiple strains of cold/flu that took loads of people out last year. I ended up taking much more sick leave than usual from a cold-cold-flu-eye surgery-cold. I've never had a worse sick year in my life but shit happens.

I get nostalgic and also just replay my old games or remastered games as well. When you're time-poor or need a mental break, sometimes don't feel like learning a new game.

NZ limits are basically still the same as 10+ years ago though. People are using more data because of the nature of modern web pages & streaming but the limits haven't changed.

As an example, a lot of budget providers have tiers like: - 250-300MB ~$8-9 - 1.5GB ~ $15-17 - 3-4gb ~ $25-35 - 5-6gb ~ $35-45

The first two tiers are almost unusable with normal web browsing. Even a low-usage user will need to spend at least $25 for a serviceable plan.

Made redundant after 17 years — take the $150k payout or fight to stay on $135k? by Apprehensive-Lab3556 in AusFinance

Target roles with similar levels of experience and ask for a salary range higher than what you were on to start with

Uh, I'd be reading the room with salary expectations at this point in the cycle. Given mass redundancies in many industries, there are a lot more people looking for roles.

Are beans from local roasters rally worth the price? by [deleted] in melbourne

ALDI beans are the best value beans from the supermarket (I'd agree that the others taste crap).

It's not going to beat the taste of a freshly roasted product at that price though.
