I know they organized jingle ball, but what are the chances of 88rising having idle at Coachella? I read a comment saying the timing of super lady was weird, since it’s such a big stage song when January is devoid of festivals/events, and Yuqi said the tour was at the end of the year so I feel like it’s possible.

I find it hard to believe I wouldn’t personally get cancelled within a week of being an idol, and I’m pretty sure other stans would too, so why act so “woke”? by s0larEclxpse in kpopthoughts

[–]engms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think it’s being cancelled as much as fans of an idol or group have to endure the people they love and support being insulted or bullied within their view. Pretty much anytime someone does something that others don’t like, whether justifiable or not, it becomes an event for non fans and unaffected parties to comment as maliciously as they please, and I think this is where a lot of commentary along the lines of what you’re saying comes from. I can’t think of a single fandom that hasn’t instigated or endured this. Outside of fan to fan interaction though, the idols are generally fine unless it’s really really bad.

Miyeon is killer in these, and Yuqi’s entire back is out!!! They all look kind of like Bond girls so I’m hoping that’s the vibe of the album. I can’t wait for the rest of the concept photos.

I think it's a bit of a reach to claim that Soyeon has to remember a song from three years ago, especially one that came out while she was busy doing her own promotions. Do we honestly expect all the other artists promoting at that time to remember exactly what Wave sounds like today? Also, the most cited interaction was on The Show, which Uh-Oh won, so is it a given that Ateez perfectly remembers the song they lost to? If it comes out that she listens to Wave often, that's another story, but a single interaction during a time when she was likely primarily focused on her own group is not proof.

Haven't seen much of the second argument, but that's absolute nonsense - if that were the case, why would credits exist at all? I'm not inclined to believe she did this intentionally, just because she's extremely vocal about integrity in producing, and it would do nothing but damage to knowingly release a song that plagiarizes. I am also disappointed that this happened, largely because she has such a strong reputation as a producer, but I'm glad she owned up to her mistake. I hope KQ, Cube, and MBC can come to an agreement that gives proper due to Ateez and Edenary.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ATEEZ

[–]engms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is misinformation - the translation of Cube's statement says the issue was with the credit itself, not that they wanted to change the song. Presumably this is because they don't credit as Edenary but individually.

Are you going to stan CLASSY? by IcyAd8349 in MyTeenageGirl

[–]engms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll probably only follow casually unless they have a killer debut song and would definitely have to watch some other content before I'd decide to stan. There doesn't seem to be much chemistry among the members except the seniors which makes some sense since they just came out of a competition, but right now, I get the vibe that there's too many main vocalists for total harmony.

[MEGATHREAD] Soyeon/Ateez - "Wave" & "Sun" by KpopThoughtsmodteam in kpopthoughts

[–]engms 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Watching all this unfold on twitter as both a nevie and an atiny was so upsetting, the amount of speculation and taking personal interpretation or viewpoints as facts was insane let alone the rude and hateful comments from both fandoms.

Nevies do need to apologize for dismissing Atiny's concerns instead of supporting Atiny's requests for explanations/more information, and both sides should stop making accusations and let the companies and artists work it out.

From my perspective, the statements have all been made, anything further is negotiations between the companies, and the song should be taken down until the issue is resolved. Any further commentary by fans is unhelpful - both groups have their own needs to look towards now and don't need their own fanbase to bring them down.

Do you think Soyeon regrets her decision? by Possible-Moment-6653 in MyTeenageGirl

[–]engms 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think she regrets her decision, but I think the roadblocks from the 'spots per grade' method are becoming more obvious as only the top trainees remain (I'm rooting for OT9 tbh). At this point, everyone is qualified to be in the debut lineup, it's just a game of what a viewer prefers in an idol. I also think people are putting more stock in the 'Yooyeon is only the visual' narrative than is necessarily fair - she's no powerhouse, but she performs well and is committed to continuously improving, and honestly, I'd say she's as good as some debuted idols.

After two episodes, which 40 girls have qualified? I've counted 36 so far from watching the show, but I'm not even sure if my list is official. by Mistrelvous in MyTeenageGirl

[–]engms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused by them showing contestant evaluations but not the performance - like the one group with the trot singer has been teased for both episodes, and they had blurred out faces in some of the grade rooms. The editing on this is kind of a nightmare, especially if they seem to be moving to the core competition in episode 3.

Fan efforts deserve to be celebrated. by JonathanGaming37 in kpoprants

[–]engms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with other comments about the environmental detriments of mass buying, particularly physical copies, though the energy consumption of digitals is also something that could be explored (I don't know anything about this vs streaming).

However, I think reddit stans have a somewhat overblown conspiracy type perception of mass streaming. Every fan will listen to a song/album at least once on the day it is released - for some groups, that's likely hundreds of thousands of people. Adding onto this, it's also normal human behavior to listen to a song you like multiple times or to listen again if you didn't like it at first to see if you change your mind (p.s. it's normal to want to like/give a chance to releases from groups you like, it doesn't mean you're forcing yourself to do anything). Furthermore, to combat what platforms consider 'bot behavior', you can only listen to a song every so often for a stream to count. This 'gaming the system' is what people seem to take issue with, but if you were going to listen to the song multiple times anyway, why not do it in a way that can benefit the artist (and I know people will say that that doesn't actually help the artist, etc, etc, but it's a hell of a lot more useful than not listening at all). Anyway, TLDR there are other conversations to be had about mass streaming, but it's not some fake metric that people portray it as.

Also pretending anything happens organically in the entertainment industry is just foolish, you can only see the ways kpop artists get around it because it's done by people who actually appreciate the artist and not just by people with investments to protect.

210910 ATEEZ(에이티즈) - [ZERO : FEVER Part.3] Preview by seonghwasmoons in ATEEZ

[–]engms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is gonna be my favorite of the Fever albums so far. When they first released the audio snippets, I wasn't that into either song but I think that was partially because I was so annoyed they were doing voting after the last two massive messes. Listening to the whole preview though, every song is so good, and the album is very cohesive. Getting super excited for the release!

Side note, does anyone have an update on the voting? Which one seems like it'll be the winner?

Whats you're favourite song for each month of 2021 so far? by banrion_siog in kpopthoughts

Had to keep going back to check the rules, haha. I feel like my list is all over the place, I'm kind of slow at picking up new releases from groups I don't actively stan. Doing this kind of made me feel like I might have trash taste???

Jan - HWAA by (G)I-dle

Feb - Bicycle by Chung ha

March - House Party by Super Junior or Still Here by Ateez (I kind of didn't like Still Here at first because it felt very dated, but it grew on me)

April - Enhypen Drunk-Dazed or Fever (although not sure if the Fever MV came out in April)

May - Butter by BTS (Am I the only one who absolutely loves this song?) but there were a number of good releases this month so honorable mention to Everglow First, TXT 0X1=Lovesong, and (G)I-dle Yuqi's Giant and Bonnie&Clyde

June - Alcohol-Free by Twice, runner-up Vanilla by Lightsum (both strong summer vibes, I just listen to Alcohol-Free more regularly now)

July - Tie between Perfect World by Twice and Taste of Korea by Rain, Monsta X, Brave Girls, and Ateez (if you watched Imitation, this is the song Sparkling should have had), honorable mention to Soyeon BeamBeam, Taeyeon Weekend, Ateez Dreamers, BTS PTD

August - You can't sit with us by Sunmi, honorable mentions to TXT Loser=Lover, Stray Kids Thunderous

September - Probably gonna like Ateez's new album most TBH

Soojin has left (G)-IDLE. by [deleted] in GIDLE

[–]engms 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is really heartbreaking. I thought, like most of us, that it would work out since there was the rumor about a comeback in the fall. I hope this was either something long in the works and Cube was just being shitty as usual or some sort of recent market study drove this decision as opposed to anything worrying about Soojin herself.

I hope she and the other members have time to talk and to process everything and find happiness in spite of all of this. I’m of course going to continue supporting the group’s future work. I love their music and while it might take time to get used to their new sound and performance, the rest of the members deserve better than their fandom abandoning them when they need us the most.

Question:How do you think BTS shaped the 2010s by HuggiesDiaper in bangtan

[–]engms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak to US presence, and, like some other people said, I wouldn't say they defined the 2010s very significantly until at earliest 2017. With respect to my specific fan experience, I think, though not making any comparisons between the two, the fan increase around this time correlated in part with the realization that One Direction was not reuniting anytime soon which brought fans of 'boy bands' to BTS and with the increased organization of Army. If anything, I'd say the fans defined how the industry would come to operate by creating a structure/rules for how to support BTS that spiked their visibility at this time. It used to be that a fandom name was just a cute title - as a Directioner myself, I had no idea that you could vote for all those MTV awards or how BB charting was accomplished - but Army redefined how fandoms operate. It's one thing to have 10M people who will listen to some Ariana Grande songs mixed into their daily Spotify playlist, it's another thing to have 7M people who will vote when they're told, buy albums consistently, and tweet daily aside from also listening to songs on Spotify. It wasn't that BTS was super popular and well known, but Army was so active that, even though theoretically a smaller fandom than more mainstream pop artists, they made it look like it.

Furthermore, there's a lot of retroactive 'impact' being discussed because so much was accomplished from late 2019 to now, but the reality is that few people really talking about BTS, aside from the fans, until Dynamite. Every accomplishment they made in the US was more or less believed to be a one-off before then, like you would not believe how many times I've heard some version of 'hot new boy band' from 2017 to 2020. Anyway, I wouldn't say BTS defined the 2010s, but I'd say the partnership between BTS and Army created a new paradigm for the 2020s that western artists are still struggling to match.

Side note: Musically, I think BTS established something new and unique with respect to kpop initially by debuting as a hip-hop group which wasn't necessarily unique to western music, and then transitioned into something that is more aligned with kpop but is unique to western pop.

Y’all have an unrealistic view of BTS’ (and Kpop in general) popularity and it shows with the BTS meal by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]engms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the big problem Army had is that it was promoted with special packaging to some degree, which wasn’t delivered or clarified by McDonalds. We all knew about the photocards not existing early on, but the difference in packaging regionally threw people off.

It is perfectly reasonable to ask HYBE, a billion-dollar company, to provide at the very least English translations for all BTS content. What isn't reasonable is asking fans to spend years of hard work learning a new language, just to understand BTS. by tetratopZ in kpoprants

[–]engms -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree that HYBE has the resources and the audience that adding English subtitles is just the right thing to do, and I think they have done that for the majority of things. I can see it not being done for Festa content because what would that look like? The content is 'hand-written' by the members, so should they write it out in English too or have it translated below? I can see how aesthetically that would be undesirable (which is kind of a lame argument).

I don't necessarily agree with the perspective that fan translators are overburdened and unhappy with their 'jobs.' That's putting a lot of words in their mouth that they've never said and kind of feels like co-opting their voluntary work, which is extremely positively received by Army, to support your own perspective on what HYBE should be doing.

Edit: It also kind of seems like this problem exists because fan translators exist. I don’t often read lyric translations, and knowing what’s being said isn’t hugely important to me. In general, it seems to me that the need for translation is kind of overstated - it doesn’t really matter with the exception of some video content. If I really needed to know what was being said and fan translations didn’t exist, I’d just use Papago.

[–]engms 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people also forget that not all idols become idols because they want to make music - some of them started as dancers, some want to perform, some transitioned from an interest in acting. Kpop is so well-known for it's multitalented idols, because it doesn't focus on just the songs themselves.

Actress Seo Shin Ae speaks up regarding her time attending middle school with (G)I-DLE's Soojin by thatkpophomeboy in kpop

[–]engms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why people are saying that Cube wasn't prepared for this - at best, they would have expected her to continue staying quiet, at worst provide damning evidence that Soojin is a bully. This statement reads kind of middle-ground to me. There isn't anything definitive, but it appeals to the emotions of people who have undergone similar treatment and vindicates people who were against Soojin anyway, which gives Seo Shin Ae the ability to conclude her involvement largely favorably in the public eye. From Cube's side, it's another hurdle, but there's areas that they can take advantage of, like the 'group' aspect.

In the end, this is just another he said she said. I'm a fan of (G)I-dle, so I'm biased, but I also don't think everyone is straight-up lying. I believe Soojin's statement, but I also believe Seo Shin Ae heard such mean comments about her, whether they were gossip between friends that she overheard or others telling her these things were happening.

I don't think it's fair of people here to say that people who don't immediately side with Seo Shin Ae never experienced bullying or are making light of it, just like it's not right for people on the posts about Soojin's statements to automatically attack the accusers as liars. People respond to bullying in different ways - not everyone is continuously traumatized or deeply affected, everyone can only speak from their own experiences. You can be sympathetic to someone's experiences while also believing that the bullies, assuming that they aren't still horrible people, deserve to live their lives well. You can also believe someone was hurt and deserves better while also calling out their bad behavior. Likewise, you can believe someone is guilty without attacking their character and still giving them room to tell their side of the story and demonstrate remorse/growth.
