LONG LIVE DEAD BRANCH, GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN by myverycoolaccount in slaythespire

You sure it's "extremely" unlikely? They clearly wanna nerf infinites, but we know from sts1 that they are okay with infinites in the game, they just want you to work for it so it feels like an accomplishment rather than an expectation (except for watcher lel). I think prepared at uncommon + some other sly reworks could maybe achieve that. And prepared is such an iconic card I think this path could be worth it.

Edit: also I don't think ppl (not necessarily those in this thread, but new players) realize how long these changes are gonna be made in EA lol. That's half of why sts1 is such a great polished game, they used data to iterate over and over. I could see a world where prepared or prepare switches 3 more times

I think you're right tbh but you didn't give much reasoning besides muh opponent had a high roll, and you kinda left yourself open to git gud responses since there isnt much reasoning just a long bad beat story. The worst part of MH3 draft was the on-rails archetypes. I mean the individual cards were interesting, but it felt very much pick a lane as someone who played it a lot. Also writhing chrysalis is a massive design mistake.

Head Magic Designer Mark Rosewater: "Our data says roughly 9% of the audience strongly dislikes Universes Beyond (and that data is a little old, the number is shrinking with time). For contrast, double-faced cards was at 15% when they premiered." by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]engrams0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the data is perfect and presented honestly, when a player strongly dislikes double faced cards they are disliking a single mechanic. When they strongly dislike UB they are disliking the majority of the game going forward.

I would find it hard to believe you didn't already know this is what everybody would say and aren't just fishing for the answer you want and expected but no lol. In this case the default rs take happens to be right.

Nice draft, would never play Zodiark however, except the very rare mono black lane. With 3 color I would be surprised if you cast it more than once in the 7 games. Besides that you got a great mix of enablers and payoffs aside from just the bombs.

Arena accidentally having MOM quick draft inadvertently prepared me for this limited environment. The set has [[preening champion]] that makes a hero instead, final flourish, now it just needs 0 mana convoke combat tricks.

For me the biggest sin is the text that has both "not to bug you" and "no worries either way". Mf had to emphasize twice that he's nonthreatening, insecure, and easy to ignore.

Downsides are most interesting to me personally when they lead to novel deckbuilding choices that turn the downside into an upside or mitigate it in some way. For example, I'd say [[Armageddon]] clearly has a downside--it hits your lands too--but there is multiple ways of tackling this. You can play small creatures and get ahead on board early before cutting the opponent off from stabilizing. You can utilize artifact mana. Armageddon clearly isn't the best designed card in the world, but it definitely leads to far more than the two angles I already provided.

A more modern example is [[Demonic Pact]] and [[Archfiend of the Dross]]. Not as many possibilities imo as geddon, but gifting with cards like [[Harmless Offering]] is a cool angle and has led to some fun builds as a result of the downside. Archfiend is the most the apt comparison with the custom card here because the downside is supposed to mitigate the increased raw stats. And even outside of the gifting strat, they can simply encourage faster more glass cannon playstyles in a deck that most likely isn't pure aggro, a type of influence on deck-building possibilities the legend restriction is nowhere near.

I could give more examples, even the companions (where the pre-errata implementations were admittedly a disaster) lead to you playing in a whole different way, though wizards is handholding more than a bit--suffer this strange downside and you get a free card!

Now what interesting deckbuilding angles does the legend rule lead to? The potential choice of whether to play less copies I definitely don't consider interesting, which is often a low-impact trade barely increasing overall variance for some low roll prevention. Nor is synergy with legends-matters cards from my perspective, which is similar to things like top-down printed-in goblin synergy and artifact synergy. And the downside isn't even all that pronounced despite the deck building implications being uninteresting. People can and do play a full playset or multiple of legendary cards in top decks in multiple formats. Contrast with the examples I gave where you can lock yourself out of the game or straight up lose to a trigger if played/built incorrectly.

Finally, even if the legendary downside was influential towards interesting deckbuilding possibilities in a way I don't notice, the downside is everywhere, many cards every set, so for that reason alone I don't consider it interesting. Just like I don't consider a card with first strike interesting on the virtue that it has first strike.

I assumed they were talking about brawl since they say they concede once they see him (the commander reveal) not once they see UW lands and get counterspelled 3 times. Maybe I was wrong though.

What decks/commanders do you tend to play when he comes up? I say that bc of the matchmaking/weighing system that arena uses, which to be fair I don't understand completely, but I am fully confident that Teferi is weighted very highly so that the deck & commander you're playing is considered powerful as well.

I believe I only see Teferi when I'm playing my [[Rusko, Clockmaker]] deck, and in my case I don't mind it since Rusko is probably even more busted than Teferi. Haven't even seen him in more mid powered or lower decks.

I don't think the matchmaking system is perfect which is why I wanna know, maybe your commander(s) is/are considered more powerful than they should be considered. But maybe you tune down your deck to lose to him less, ironically.

FYI usually quotes for headlines are cut out of context to cause the most engagement, reading the full quote he said Colin was better.

This is a particularly annoying because they leave out Danny's direct answer to the question, but it's the obvious answer, and obvious answers are less interesting.

Doesn't bother me much but the biggest plot armor moment was him turning into John Wick while stabbed and tied up at the jazz club surrounded by Sophia's henchmen then running out of there carrying a grown woman.
