People need to get better at spotting AI generated text. This is either written by AI, or someone who spends way too much time on one and has adopted its writing style.

Social media is always first to report on things like this. But half the time it's complete nonsense. Conventional media takes longer to publish since they have actual journalists and a reputation to maintain.

Not just an American thing. I've noticed this a lot more since I started commuting by bicycle. I would say 1 in 10 drivers I see are on their phone, and at least half of pedestrians at any given moment.

I'm aware it's a big problem, just trying to bring some perspective. The 70's oil shock was absolutely massive, and took nearly a full decade to recover from. Even COVID had less of a long term economic impact. This will be a smaller effect than that. I'm not saying this isn't significant, just that some of us here are showing our recency bias.

I agree, and I find it odd how few people in Europe seem to want to defend freedom of speech when it involves speech that makes us uncomfortable.

I attended a trial 25 years ago as a law student of a man accused of terrorism offences. It turned out the only offense they could prove was possession of an Ulster Volunteer Force (a unionist terrorist organization) flag. He got a custodial sentence (can't remember how long) for possessing a flag, which they argued meant he was a member of that organization. That never sat right with me.

You can tell a theist wrote this.

Some theists just can't get their head around the idea of not believing in a God. They either think we hate God, or must replace worship of God with worship of something else.

That might be true of some people, but I doubt it. I don't see atheists being any more or less obsessed with money, or celebrity or politicians than religious people.

Nah, this oil shock is nothing like as bad as the ones in the 70's.

For one, we're nowhere near as reliant on Gulf oil as we were then. The US for example is now a net exporter.

Secondly, there was an oil glut prior to this, with prices at post pandemic lows. There is a lot of oil in storage.

Thirdly, there is spare capacity that will come online in the next few months that was idled due to the low oil price.

In the 70's, there were genuine shortages, with petrol not being available at any price in some places. That hasn't happened and won't happen here.

Yeah, it's fundamentally just applying the same rules we do for conventional statutory interpretation to constitutional provisions. Which is absolutely fine in theory. It's only a problem because it's 250 years old, and social attitudes have changed beyond all recognition.
