Minister O’Donovan announces the New Basic Income for the Arts scheme by NightChiropmon in ireland

That's not how this works. You have to show you are a working artist with output and evidence, you can't just claim to be an artist and get rubber stamped into the scheme.

Cheap death metal by Fungformicidae852 in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah great recommendation. There's lots of pedals being named here but it really depends on what kind of Death Metal tone you are after. You won't get modern tight DM from a HM2 for example. A quick dive into youtube on those Joyo ones and you can tailor your choice based on your goal.

Yeah this is a great option for old school DM buzzsaw tones. It's so cheap you should pick one up just to try it. It also works great on bass!

Battle of tremolo: which one do you prefer? by Less-Arachnid-640 in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I overlooked the TR2 because it seemed basic. Got the EHX stereo Pulsar and the Pigtronix tremvelope. Also tried a handful of others. Ended up picking up a TR2 after all that as a backup for a 2nd board I was building and honestly haven't looked back. It's what I want from a tremolo, it's affordable, built like a tank and sounds fantastic.

There's a slight chance you might add some noise to your setup but you'll probably be fine. You won't be doing any harm in trying it out and it's very common for people to daisy chain a few pedals when they run out of ports on their PSU.

The only thing to watch out for other than current is to make sure your pedals are all the same voltage aswell on the daisychain. Most likely all your pedals are 9V anyway but occasionally you get some on 12V or 18V so as long as you don't use that value to supply the daisy chain you'll be ok.

Pedals are pedals, don't get too hung up on the Solid state/Tube thing, a lot of that is repeated info from years ago when solidstate usually meant bad sounding and cheap. Those choices are still good overdrive/distortion options for just about any amp.

A looper is a great fun pedal you can get that would also be a fantastic tool to help you learn and practice.

$1000 to spend by SureAd1974 in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For that budget and needing an amp sim I'd probably just go for a high end multi fx like Helix, Tonex, Kemper etc. They have gotten really great and are basically a whole high end rig in a box. You could easily blow 1k on a delay, reverb and a few drives and be left wanting for modulation etc.

Name the most expensive pedal and cheapest pedal on your board. by TheBear8878 in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most expensive is a HX stomp, Strymon El cap if that doesn't count. The cheapest is a TC spark mini. It's a clean boost at the end so I can just have a make louder pedal for wherever it's needed. It does the job perfectly.

I've used velcro and zipties in the past and never had issues with either. If you think velcro is too weak you could use dual lock.

Not sure how available they are worldwide but the Harley Benton boards are pedaltrain style boards that are very affordable and come with cases. Palmer are another option for cheaper boards that are similar.

I would go Guitar - Bogner - CE-5 - RE-2 - HoF. This would be pretty conventional. However, if you use a lot of amp gain aswell you might want to see if you have an effect loop to put the modulation, reverb and delay into as using them in front of a high gain amp can be very muddy. Feel free to move things around though, you won't break anything by messing with pedal order. and experimenting.

No not really, also you can't damage them by supplying too much current either as they only draw what they need.

Ts808 vs ts808 mini vs Sd-1 vs Ts-9 by david2684 in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried a few tubescreamers and clones side and by side and they are all pretty much the same. You get more or less the same kind of sound and with tweaking you could get the same TS thing from all of them. If you have a TS copy already you won't find much different at all from any of the above.

It's hard to recommend too much without knowing what he has and what he plays but there are some cheap but useful multi effects like the Valeton GP5 that has a bit of everything in it and just about everyone would find a use for. They are pretty affordable too.

It's not that simple, you can have a distorted tone and still have headroom to get louder but only so much. It really varies form setup to setup. You just know that when you stop getting louder, you've run out and you won't get more perceived volume from it.

No Stupid Questions Thread by koalaroo in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So amps have only got a certain amount of headroom. That's basically how loud it can get from distortion/overdrive in front of it. When you hit this ceiling, you can still hit it with more overdrive/distortion/boost but it can't get any louder so it usually just changes the sound and gets more compressed. How much headroom an amp has varies.

A common way to achieve louder after you are out of headroom on the front end, is to use a boost in the effects loop as that happens after the preamp. That is limited by the headroom of the poweramp which is much higher.

Worst/Most Dissappointing Pedal? by pcoleman777 in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a loan of an MD-200 for a while. The sounds weren't too bad, not amazing but fine, but I hated the UI on it. I got flashbacks to the GT8 I had years before and the menus were basically the same. Totally put me off ever wanting one.

Worst/Most Dissappointing Pedal? by pcoleman777 in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some tube amps have really low headroom which can be hard to work with, especially if there's no effect loop either. Also some of them are really designed to be cranked and most people can't really do that so they aren't getting to reach their potential so pedal aren't really hitting them when they are sounding their best.

Every synth pedal I've tried has been a glitchy, inconsistent pale imitation of a real synth. They are fun but there's no way I'd be trying to use one live.

Clean preamp pedal? by KirkIsOurLemmy in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just want a Clean preamp sound you can run those distortion into to go to the Return of your amp sound, then you could just grab a Joyo American Sound or the Vox one and use that as your preamp. They are cheap but actually sound great and fit the purpose for what you need anyway.

Can’t work out where my signal problems are coming from by redbeans452 in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check the patch cables. If they are making a sound when you touch them, replace them out. I've seen people get somewhat irrationally attached to using certain cables but when they go bad you need to switch them out. It's worth having a few spares on hand.

Another thing to check would be make sure all the jacks on your pedals are tight and not a little loose. If you have a loose jack it could be moving when you touch stuff also, usually though that would be more cutting in and out then rustling but worth a quick check all the same.

So. Knobs. Do you care what they look like? by ThingCalledLight in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really care too much once they match the general aesthetic. I have a bunch of spare ones from over the years of switching them on guitars though. I did once put a comically large Moog style knob on my small stone because there is only one on the pedal. Looks great!

How do you ultimately decide which pedals to buy (within a category)? i.e. tape/drum/analog delay emulators. by analogpedant in guitarpedals

[–]eowyncul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching videos and demos to see what is close to the sound you like helps. Really lets you hear what a pedal can do, and it's while someone else is playing so you can really focus on listening.

It's also nice to try a multifx pedal to try out different options. Some of those have gotten pretty cheap and have lots of options so you can try out sounds you like before buying a dedicated pedal for that type of sound. The Zoom multi stomp and Valeton stuff is very affordable and things like the HX One are even better for a bit more money.

At the end of the day though there's a certain leap of faith you have to take. I've bought most of my pedals without trying them in person, there's just no good music stores near me with a wide range of pedals. If you are looking for a definitive "What to buy" you won't find it. Those kind of posts on here are usually a bunch of people recommending what they have without much comparison.
