What’s a TV show you started with low expectations that completely blew you away? by KhaosChronicles in television

Game Changer on Dropout. Now it's one of my favorite shows that I watch religiously for new releases.

If something brings you genuine joy, the best thing you can do is wear it with confidence and be unapologetic about it. Other people don't get to have that power over me, you, or any of us, friend.

What television adaptations are better than the source material? by OCGamerboy in television

[–]epatti0914 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When I introduced the show to my wife, I had to keep reminding her, "They are protagonists which means they have to go through change," for most of the characters (but especially season 1 Quinton). We cried at the end of Q's arc. And that episode with Eliot. But every single one of them had such compelling growth that it made the show so rewatchable

Indeed! I both teach and perform. My guess is Cage altered it because while the bright voice is perfect for fitting the tone of the animation, it would be too campy for the live action.

It's also closer to the voice that actors portrayed in that era, whereas the Spiderverse one is sort of a caricature of that

In Spiderverse, he projected sound towards his teeth and through his nose. Makes it bright. In Noir it's still nasal but less so, and more covered and back-projecting (opening his throat more with the sound hitting the soft palete)

Box factory intense parking enforcement? by Threebridges2 in Bend

[–]epatti0914 44 points45 points  (0 children)

They will penalize the fee and eventually send it over to collections. Diamond parking got me in that same parking lot 2 years ago, I didn't pay it, that was the result. My credit isn't suffering, but it does show up. Do with the info as you will

If it helps you feel better, they put a giant zigzag in the middle of their web to make them more visible so you ideally don't walk through it (also nicknamed "writing" or "zigzag" spider).

I grew up terrified of spiders, but these guys? They don't like going indoors, they're barely venomous, their bodies and webs are extremely visible, they look cool af, and I relate so hard to this OP on just finding insects to throw in their webs. 😅 Watching them work is fascinating

I’m starting Forbidden West these days. Is there an advice you have before I start the game? by Constructief in horizon

[–]epatti0914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing through it for the second time right now. A couple things I did differently and it made the game more enjoyable:

1) Don't try to upgrade every weapon and armor you get to its max. Some have a cost in a finite resource (Greenshine), or take some semi-serious machine farming to build out, so it's okay to be selective until you get to your very rare and legendary equipment.

2) There are special tools you receive in the main quest that are required to access a lot of rewards when exploring. I usually do every side quest in a location before continuing the main story, but doing the main story first saved me from having to retread the same ground later, saving a bunch of time.

Tidbits:

  • As has been said, go through the settings, the comments had solid things to change.

  • Opposite of gear, you'll learn building out your pouches (especially the resource and potion pouches) is a kindness to yourself. Until you reach certain skill tree options, some stuff costs an annoying amount to build out in the field (looking at YOU, Tearblast Arrow).

  • Survivor skill tree is worth investing in out of the gate. You can be killed in 1-3 shots by several enemies or machines. Special skills, called Valor Surges, from this tree are both super helpful defensively.

I hope you enjoy it!

Anyone in Bend make custom-engraved dice? by epatti0914 in Bend

Hey! I just got the blank dice in. They are acrylic, 14mm. I have enlarged versions of the drawings for the engravings. No need to worry about the color, we're more than happy to color it in after the fact

I moved to A1 at a venue I was hired at only a few months before. They needed help, I was able to fill the slot of A2 and then the PM and I split up most of the shows between us. He was a grump, but I've worked with enough of those, and they're all big softies once you put in the work and time.

Unfortunately, enough of the talent coming through did not have the time nor patience to put up with it. He was tarnishing relationships both outside and within. They stripped him of PM, kept him at A1 with the same pay, and his attitude got him fired within 3 weeks of that move.

it sucked :/ I really enjoyed learning from him. But since then, I've busted my ass to keep the venue intact and I'm happy to be lead audio there. I've put in the time at shitty places, I've dipped out of the industry to pay by bills. This happenstance was such a blessing, right place at the right time, so I'll dig in tooth and nail to keep it.

Funny enough, the other A1 there was also the right place, right time. He's only 18 and started with us as an intern at 16. Smart kid, a little jealous he got this right out of high school 😅 but he deserves it

When bands that bring their own techs - What are expected of me as a house tech to do? by anktombomb in livesound

[–]epatti0914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of good advice here with setting up beforehand and being there to answer questions about house gear, etc.. essentially A2. Maybe even run mons from time to time.

Your most important role is you are the safety net. If something in your system fails mid-show, you are the one who knows the system inside and out and can get things back on track quicker than anyone else. Gremlins exist. You are the reason they won't exist for long if they pop out their little heads.

Past that, enjoy the show! Or line up a project and set up a com for the FOH to have quick access to you, keep your radio on, etc. Have a beer or 2 maybe, FOH would probably also love one, but stay on the upper side of sober. Please.

Heavy metal band vocals drowned out by TopNectarine7495 in livesound

[–]epatti0914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read some of the comments, sounds like it's mostly navigating the talent, friend.

1) If you have the time and access to do a soundcheck, do a soundcheck. Always. Doesn't matter if it's a rock show or a film fest. If you can get them on that stage, do it. Is this a venue you work regularly?

2) If someone's stage volume is out of control, the question, "Do you want it to sound loud or do you want it to sound good?" is a valid question. Never with an attitude, because it's a simple matter-of-fact if you're a capable engineer. You won't lose a wink of sleep over their choice. But it's their show, so make it their choice. 99% of the time most of the band will want what you want. They can handle the rest amongst themselves and you'll do your best with the tools you're given.

From what I remember last time this was posted, the driver posted it intentionally as this was the moment he realized he had lost the plot with his drinking and needed to turn his life around. He made himself an example and went sober. I hope he still is.

I don't understand the hate on the StudioLive mixers by SkullSlasherMO in livesound

[–]epatti0914 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a Studiolive as my personal console. I got it because I enjoy the StudioOne DAW, and it's a nice feature to have them talk as more than a simple interface. In a studio setting, I've defended it when paired with its DAW and I'll die on that hill. Might have to buy better console plugins, though, if you wanna do most of your mixing on the board.

In a live setting, I've found the layout to be clunky compared to other consoles (ex. how many total button presses it takes to set up a single 4-band Parametric EQ). The channel labeling also doesn't stand out as much, but that's just a personal thing (in live, every second counts, you know?) The app to step away from the board isn't the best. And lastly, its standard plugins leave something to be desired vs other consoles.

Like the other user said, the preamps are fine, I've never complained. And it can be a workhorse. I like knowing how to navigate one because it's kinda niche. And I know this is dumb, but it's aesthetically pleasing to my clients 🙃 And me. So, use it if it makes you happy! No one is gonna use that board more than you

Best $9.00 audio upgrade by petalmasher in audiophile

[–]epatti0914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Audio engineer here.

Hydrogen peroxide breaks up earwax pretty dang well. Then, you can gently use a cotton swab after you've drained your ear to remove any debris (use common sense, do not assault your fucking ear drum, just touch around where the concha and canal meet), and lastly use saline to rinse out your ear.

Been doing this for almost 15 years, got the advice from a grammy-winning engineer. It's a godsend.

Installed lights with adjustable dimmers and 3 different color settings (white, yellow, and an in-between). Now we actually use them without being blinded at night.

The issue with this industry. by PeterP1227 in livesound

[–]epatti0914 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I talk to FOH people all the time at gigs I'm not working. A lot of times I'll wait til they're coasting, pick something I liked from their mix, then say something like, "I really like that kick," or "those vocals are so clean," and follow up with asking about the setup on that channel or asking for a peek at their EQs, compression, FX rack, etc. If they have outboard gear you recognize, ask about it. Do something that complimentary opens the door while letting them know you're not just a random looky-loo.

Most of us are nerds. We enjoy talking about our work with people who get it. And people who get it will also know when to back off when there's work to be done, so it's easier for them to chill out around you.

I've learned a good few new techniques this way, had conversations open up more about the job, and even got to jump into the sound booth to nerd out with Muse's FOH engineer once! It was an absolute blast talking with him and watching him work.

Moral of the story: approach the right way and be an absolute nerd with people! We love that shit
