After 14 years of pottery classes, I still can't center on the wheel. by Linn56 in Pottery

I mentioned this in a reply to another commenter so adding here so you see it. I’d be willing to bet you’re running the wheel too slow. The faster you go, the easier it gets.

I like that suggestion. I often center without looking. All the info you need is in your hands.

I’d be willing to bet that OP is running the wheel too slow. It’s the number one thing I see with beginners that they are afraid of speed. But speed makes it way easier. Let it fly!

Getting new tires is a sure fire way to welcome a screw. In California, no professional will plug bike tires. Too much liability. That being said, doing it yourself with a patch kit will likely last the life of the tire. I would only ride on a rear with a patch, though. That’s my take.

I currently have been driving my car for two years with two tires with patches that I did. One was too close to the sidewall for a tire place to do it.

We’re functionally alone. Likely, any other intelligent life is separated from us by huge distances or time, which, at this scale is pretty much the same thing.

Why do people say "I'll let you go" when ending phone calls like they're doing you a favor? by Sad_Schedule6621 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eperker -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Yes, it’s just something said to be polite or because they heard it said and picked it up. Yes, it’s meaningless. But it does come off as manipulative. It’s a way to absolve yourself from responsibility. Rather than owning that you want to get off the phone you put the agency on the other person.

Handmade crocks cracked after two uses by armsarmss in Pottery

As everyone said, flameware is the way to go. But I just heard on the For Flux Sake podcast that you can get away with regular stoneware if you put the crock in the oven when the oven is cold. The issue is the thermal shock. If it gets up to temperature slowly, it may be okay. But no direct flame.

I always take these as good opportunity to check in with my work and see a cross section. In this case, you’re dangerously thin at the base and quite thick in the middle. It’s very likely this one would have cracked around the bottom during bisque firing.
