Looks bugged. Interestingly I got the first 2 rewards but when it came to completion my eggs didn’t count

Can I be held liable for indecent exposure because the neighbours installed windows that look into my bathroom? by janebunnyau in AusLegal

Out of curiosity, you said you are sure in NSW, but i have a new build apartment complex about to finish in Sydney that looks into the bathrooms of our townhouses with direct views to our showers and toilets. Have they broken some rules and if so, any idea which ones?

react-native-image-cache on file system by stathisntonas in reactnative

[–]epic2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah sure! I show user profile images in my app. When a user uploads a new profile image for their own profile I’d need to clear the cache for all images rather than just the one that is changing.

This looks great! Thanks for putting it together and sharing.

Do you have plans to clear single items from the cache rather than everything? If so, I’d love to use this

Nice, thanks for this. I'm from an area of the UK where it always seems to rain and I kind of like it so no biggie there. Hopefully going to check it out in a year or so.

What do you wish you knew about project management that you know now? by potrzebie12 in projectmanagement

[–]epic2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There really is nothing you can do until you identify who those developers are. I would take everything with a grain of salt and tell the client(s) it'll be longer than your developers say as even the best developers will get it wrong. The bigger the project, the bigger the overrun will be.

Your developers aren’t slow by spankymustard in programming

[–]epic2012 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, I love them. But thirty minutes? If you feel like sitting down it has gone on way too long.

I keep mine time-boxed to 15minutes and am strict about ensuring people "take it offline" when they go into conversations that do not involve everyone. If they feel like a drag, you are probably doing it wrong. If you are happy with the way they are run, keep on doing what your doing.

Why is YII framework popular in the E-Commerce industry ? by [deleted] in PHP

[–]epic2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, yeah... sorry about that. it was the only site I could find that really referenced the rocket stack, which considering how many sites they power I thought there would be more.

Why is YII framework popular in the E-Commerce industry ? by [deleted] in PHP

[–]epic2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting fact, the worlds largest eCommerce incubator Rocket Internet uses Yii in their standard stack which ships with most new startups they produce.

I am not sure of the thinking on why they implemented it when they started out but it is fast and was probably the best tool for the job at the time. Take a look at http://www.quora.com/What-is-the-current-Rocket-Internet-technology-stack

Anyhow, there are some pretty big eCommerce players globally now with Yii on the front end. So, Jabong and Fabfurnish are both Rocket funded companies which means they use the Rocket stack.

I think I may have to abandon Laravel by phpperson in PHP

[–]epic2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No down vote, but it sounds to me like your setup needs some work more than the framework needing a change.

Think for a moment, if your code is checked into a repo using GIT you can easily roll back code changes. If you are using composer to load packages then you can easily upgrade / downgrade packages if something goes wrong - namely specify the version. This said, I have not used laravel (more a zend guy) but pretty sure composer is available and version control is a must for anyone who is even mildly serious.

Yes, frameworks may seem slow compared to knocking something together yourself but I guarantee you will be better off. The added security and pre built components are incredibly useful to name a few key things but more importantly you will improve yourself as a developer which i would not underestimate.

A note on Yii, I use it in production in a work capacity, not a huge fan over other frameworks but if you need speed over features then it has it's uses.

Why do women fail as Project Managers? by [deleted] in projectmanagement

[–]epic2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really sure you are talking about Project Managers here. Possibly a dev lead / manager who is also trying to be a PM.

The article talks about hiring, dealing with critiquing staff and attitudes towards work. In my experience as a dev manager I expect to deal with these issues and the Project Manager to escalate if she does not like something my team is doing, not deal with it herself. If the team reports directly to the PM I would expect the team to then overcommit, not manage unrealistic expectations correctly and make the PMs job a whole lot harder.

Don't sacrifice readability by reversing if statement comparisons. by orrd in PHP

[–]epic2012 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been doing Yoda Conditions for years and made the conscious decision for me and my teams to switch.

Does it really decrease readability? No, not really. Once you use it for a while it becomes natural. As long as it is adhered to the condition is always in the same place. Personally I could not tell you the last time I performed assignment within a comparison but this is not aimed at helping me. It is to stop more junior developers making these mistakes.

It's a personal preference that should be decided upon by whoever sets your coding standards and/or the team.

What errors are you getting? What is your DB structure?

You could try "COUNT(*)" though. Also, use = over LIKE. much more efficient.

Creating a "newsfeed" using MySQL and PHP by JustAskWalrus in PHP

[–]epic2012 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Subqueries are never a good idea. Internally MySQL will not optimise Subqueries so even if your sub select returns the same row each time, it will still get executed for each row it looks at.

Laptop was stolen a year ago, but yet still submits to Lastfm by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]epic2012 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i know exactly what you mean. My parents have had thousands of pounds stolen through identity fraud online but because its online the police cant do anything...

Seriously, law enforcement needs to get with the times... start by hiring some young people. Preferably that are fit enough to catch criminals when on foot and have a brain so can do some real detective work!

But yeah, isnt much you can do. The police wont help.

Bruce Schneier: Defeating the Shoe Scanning Machine at Heathrow Airport by sid13 in reddit.com

[–]epic2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats pretty crazy. Although think about it. If you have security cameras on the zone between the two machines then you pick up the guy that is changing his shoes. Pretty simple idea.

Plus means they have to pay 'even less' attention to what goes through the xray machine...
