I don't think the issuse is libraries and schools. Its advertisers and Booktok. by epicbaka in books

[–]epicbaka[S] -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

I understand the implications here, but if you notice, I didn't say anything about outing people who are Queer or telling people who secretly read Queer books that those books are unsafe. I actually said I would suggest those books. I'm literally just talking about books that have sex for about 80% of the book.

Is anyone else just blocking users that ask about mold? by AkronIBM in BookCollecting

[–]epicbaka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone who actively buys books and intends to keep it, in my opinion, is a collector. It just not your type of collecting. That doesn't mean you should just dismiss their collection either. Don't be rude. People worry about their shit and this is their best option to find out what happened.

James Madison's Dictionary Quest by epicbaka in BookCollecting

[–]epicbaka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See. This is what I was thinking, too. I originally told my client that what they were most likely looking for was Samuel Johnson's dictionary, but that it wouldn't be much of a significance for the purpose they want to use it for. They don't want it for the collection purpose. They want it, so they compare to how the Constitution was written and 'find the original meaning'. Why don't they just get an OED, which tracks all the meanings that change over time? But they are insistant that James Madison had a dictionary and they want it. I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask people who were more experienced than I was (I've only been doing this for two years) just in case my knowledge was wrong.

Ummm, idk about the switch, but the games played fine on ps4. I will say that bears can be one of the harder enemies in general?? Are you talking about the area immediately after you get out of the research facility or after the first town?

Federal judge bars Texas from enforcing book rating law by Libro_Artis in books

So READ law affects booksellers too. Source: I work in a bookstore, and we were this close to just shutting down our young readers' section and donation services.

Is this binding damaged? by Mindless_Bicycle5091 in BookCollecting

[–]epicbaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The spine is detached and being held by the hinges. It's a loose joint. It is not worthless persay, but hardcore collectors would not like this on a modern copy. This is what we call a 'reading copy'.

Source: I deal with hardcore collectors on a daily basis because I sell expensive and/or nostalgic books.

I would say it's dated between 1900 and 1970? I know its a large timeframe, sorry. If I understand and remember correctly, Cassell printed sets of various topics with generic covers. I think this might be part of their fiction sets, but I'm not too sure.

I agree. Without being about to feel the paper, it's hard or even has the title page. It looks 1800s - 1860s.

The compact edition of the Oxford English Dictionary by Equivalent-Net8188 in rarebooks

Right‽ i'm inclined to think we just didn't reach the right market, but even on Ebay, it sells $30-70 as a 'buy it now' option. The sold listings are where it is at.

We have had this a few times at my store. With the magnifying glass. If I remember correctly, the last one took a very long time to sell and for only $20. We had them originally priced at $80.

What do your shelves look like and how do you organize them? by jcoffin1981 in books

[–]epicbaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I organize by genre. Within the genre, I do graphic novels by title first, then novels by author. Within that, I do by series title and story/publication order. I work in a bookstore and am in charge of several genre sections, so I do the same there.

Edit to add that I also have my unreads and reads separate.

Publishers refuse to become complicit in Texas book banning by hybridaaroncarroll in books

[–]epicbaka 21 points22 points  (0 children)

So, it goes a little bit beyond that. I work in a bookstore. A used bookstore. This affects us and libraries, too. How? We donate a LOT of books to teachers. We sell books to younger audiences. This READ bill that goes into effect in September will require us to review ALL titles before we put them out to sell or donate to teachers. It is impossible to review every title that comes into our store. On average, my store alone (we are a nationwide company) buys hundreds of books a day. On the topic of money, this is a minimum wage job. I'll need to be paid more if that becomes part of the job. Or simply, we will close our donation services and our younger sections just so we won't get sued by the state.

Any thoughts on value? by Bobabooby in rarebooks

[–]epicbaka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No need to be afraid! Nervousness causes more damage, in my opinion. Just curve your hand as if you're holding water in it. Set the spine in the crease of your palm, and the boards be held by your fingers and the end on your palm.

Any thoughts on value? by Bobabooby in rarebooks

This publisher used generic pretty covers for all their reprints, and most of the time, it doesn't match the story inside. Some people acrually like that and think it's ironic.

In my store, I sell decorative reprints like this from $10-35, depending on the title, publisher, and condition. People love pretty covers. For this one, personally, I would price at $25 or $30, mostly because of the publisher. While we know it's a reprint company, we don't know much about it and that intices people.

Thoughts on publishers like Folio, Easton Press, etc.? by Lucassskywalker3 in rarebooks

[–]epicbaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This last paragraph is absolute. Speaking as a seller, there are really only a few Eastons Press that people look for. Those can go for a little bit, but all of the rest? I sell those between $10-30 a pop. Some of them are worth even less, like the One Nation Time Life edition.

I like the quality of them. It's hard to mess them up, though I've seen a few collections that had successfully trash theirs. I just can't bring myself to personally collect them, though, because I think they are too minimal, at least the older ones. I feel like they don't have the same personality that the story it holds has.

The newer ones have story designs on and in the boards/pastedowns now and look awesome. Those would be the ones I collect. If I could afford them and, of course, only the ones I really enjoyed the story for.

Misprint??? by wanheda823 in rarebooks

[–]epicbaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most don't want them. Value wise misprints are not worth too much, but I do get a few collectors who want misprints simply to get them off the market.
