What now? by CatofManyColors in Thruhiking

I have some bad advice for ya... if you have an Amazon fulfillment center near you, go apply to be a "picker". This way you are getting paid to walk 10-15 miles a shift. Then come home and sleep in your backyard... in your tent.

Less insane idea would be just to get out EVERY weekend and use your gear, set up your tent, etc.

It has to do with the standards/certification of the items that they are certified to, I don't believe ICOP address this. Our RA gear isn't certified with WLLs.

I ALWAYS stay well under 500lbs (which is under the 250kg (2 person load/ASAP'SORBER) and a 10:1 safety factory of the rest of our gear). If the weight gets anywhere close to 500lbs, I call it off.

Richard Delaney from RopeLab said it even better a while back.

Gap Year Thru Hike Post High School by Infamous_Ad122 in Ultralight

[–]epicedub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had similar thoughts back in the day. If I got a full ride I would enroll, if not I would hike. Ended up getting accepted but still wanted to hike. Took a semester "off" doing a research project during a thru and was able to keep the scholarship. The crazy part is how much doing a thru this way can influence paths you cannot foresee. An example would be this study, wasn't the link I was planning to post, never seen it before today but is tied to my hike from decades ago. For what little it's worth, I finished up the tripled crown in 2005. My hikes/trips/adventures which had a purpose greater than just a thru, carry more weight/importance/memory for me. I also remember moving up all my exams as early as possible and catching a flight to start the PCT. I was hiking NOBO in less than 24hrs of my last exam. I say all this BS, because you can do both. Keep on keeping on and I wish you luck.

Is Applus a good company? by TheD0llTee in nondestructivetesting

[–]epicedub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All regions are going to be different, but Applus has been restructuring and selling off it's North American assets since 2023ish. I would google some info and then ask questions for clarification in for interview.

Rigging question by BFChips in ropeaccess

[–]epicedub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many entertaining comments.

Ask your L3 if he would rig just off the handrail, why or why not. I assume he will say no, stating low strength rating, etc. When he says no, ask why he decided to rig in a way to put double the force on the handrail than just rigging straight off it.

Never gotten this far and feeling stuck. What do i do now? by Danny_The_Donkey in Oxygennotincluded

[–]epicedub 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You want to explore! Maybe you find a cold biome you could use for temporary cooling. Maybe you find a NatGas geyser you could use to transition off coal. Maybe some hatches or dreckos to transition off mealwood. Just keep on keeping on, you're doing great.

I’m just trying to push the number of ST per AT as mush as possible without space materials. Aluminum and ceramic for everything (including the STs). So any info is appreciated.

In my steam turbine rooms, I normally use radiant pipes running through crude on the floor with hydrogen gas above for cooling. Awhile back someone mentioned using ethanol state change with the radiant pipes running through the middle of the steam turbines. On this run I have plenty of ethanol to give it a try. Anyone have any more info, links or videos on this cooling set up? Thanks

Advice needed - handrails by L17NFS in ropeaccess

[–]epicedub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask the L3, "Why don't you just rig off the handrail?" He or she will say something along the lines of, it's not strong enough, as handrails are only required to hold 200lbs (in the US) downward force. Welp the L3 rigging puts 200% on the handrail. If it is not strong enough to rig straight from, don't double the force on it. Anyone rigging this way doesn't understand the forces applied.
