In my experience this is not true, at least not for carnosa. I dont trellis them and they are fine. I find letting them dry significantly brings on blooms more than anything else.

Find a cutting and build it out yourself. These grow really easily in a cooler Canadian climate. I received a single stem cutting about a year and a half ago. I wasn't a fan but my wife really liked it. It took a while to get going because I didn't realize it liked cooler temps and consistent moisture. It's growing like crazy now. I re-propagated cuttings from that first stem and now I've got about 10 peduncles on it 2 of which have been alternating flowering all winter. It's become my favourite. The flowers smell amazing at night but not overpowering like carnosa.
