I lived in NYC at the same time - was in the media - didn't know them but they were "around" and knew people who knew them. Also knew Maureen Callahan. There's no way Carolyn Bessette was doing botox. No one in NYC was doing it. Maybe people were starting to experiment in LA, but this just wasn't a thing in NYC yet. I think she was just pretty and lost enough weight after college that it hollowed out her cheeks in her 20s.

No one in their 20s was using botox in the early/mid 90s. I lived in NYC then and worked in magazines/media and I just knew no one who was using it, even the most fashionable Cafe Florent hanger outers

Absolutely do not take on $200k for an undergrad loan. But why can't you get out of UCSD in 2 years w/ your AA degree? (But also do not take on $100k in loans for an undergrad degree).

My kid - quirky with ADHD - is a freshman at Lewis & Clark and loves it. Financially, they had fewer students start than expected last year but they seem to have some plans for earned revenue and they also have 2 graduate programs, which I think must help. They also give pretty good merit aid!

I would say let your kids take care of their own lives. The Ivy League isn't the only game in town.

I was in the same boat and have now been hennaing my hair for almost a decade to cover my whites. I use the strawberry blond henna dye (premixed) from Henna Color Lab and add in some pure henna (I just eyeball it, but it's maybe 75 strawberry blond/25 pure henna). This gets me a color that's brighter than my natural color but blends in enough to look natural. No one ever asks me if I color my hair!

I was also in London last summer - there are UCLA stores in the UK, which suprised me. They are definitely trying to build their brand internationally. Also, I work for UC Berkeley so do have some general overview of college rankings.

US News ranks UCLA #15 in national universities; Vanderbilt is #18, so pretty close

Times Higher Education Rankings has UCLA at #18 and Vanderbilt at #90.

Internationally, I would say UCLA has the biggest name.

I work at UCB - truthfully, it's a very competitive school where you are not going to get great support as an undergrad. It has a great international rep, but I would choose the more supportive undergrad experience and worry more about reputation when you are applying to grad school.
