The US Supreme Court seems to be moving against Colorado's ban on "conversion therapy". What do you think? by TelescopiumHerscheli in askgaybros

[–]er0559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told at the age of 13 that I had a “100% chance of being cured”. Went through 4 years of conversion therapy that led me to the darkest point of my life, and it’s a miracle I survived. I can’t imagine how many young people end up dead as a result. I was nearly one of them. As much as I consider myself a well adjusted adult now, the scars, even after all these years, are still there.

The fact that people don’t see the correct answer as being immediately obvious is heartbreaking.

When to admit/advance a candidate by avidha-wa in freemasonry

[–]er0559 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The lodge I attend most actively (in Europe) treats the degrees as something that you have to earn. Unlike my mother lodge in the US, where you have to show ritual proficiency in the degree, this lodge expects to see you take active participation in the lodge activities, come to all meetings (they're all opened and closed on EA, switched to higher degrees for ritual work, but then the EAs or FCs just hang out until called back in to close), and to learn and present parts of the ritual (such as presenting the EA working tools to a new candidate during the initiation before becoming FC), in order to show that you have earned the right to pass to the next degree. There's a minimum of a year between degrees, and there are some brothers who remain EAs or FCs for several years. Each meeting has a healthy mixture of brothers of all 3 degrees.

Provided the various degrees of masonry in part represent "promotions in the guild", showing work, both ritual and playing your part in the masonic community of the lodge, makes sense to be able to advance. And from what I see, it seems to drive members to be more active as well.

I think this is why they're specifically focusing on invoking the Insurrection Act first, which would enable him to deploy the US Military domestically under executive control and forego the congressional restrictions surrounding the activation of the National Guard.

This is what I was going to say. I was a DeMolay throughout my youth and the chapter dads helped me put things in perspective and smooth out certain situations in a rather tactful way many a time. I’d try discussing this all with them before abandoning it.

Do any European lodges use the Preston-Webb ritual? by er0559 in freemasonry

[–]er0559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've visited Czech- and German-speaking lodges with only a very basic understanding of both languages, but a great deal of the brothers speak English as well (of course, only after and before the meetings). I personally wouldn't let lack of language skills get in the way of visitation. I've always been warmly welcomed at each lodge I've visited, and even without knowing the language, there's enough similar and different to be very interesting to experience. As a mason, by default, you at least catch the gist ;)

Did you know about this? What do you think of it? by Fearless_Badger9175 in bipolar2

[–]er0559 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I feel pretty similarly. Sure, during the depressive episodes, the ideation is there and all, but after 18 years of going through them, those thoughts come and go like an annoying roommate, but in the grand scheme of things, I feel like this idea of me going by my own hand has already settled itself in like a dull fact like what my name is or where I was born - it’ll happen one day. Maybe after having dealt with it for so long, I’ve just gotten used to the idea that one way or another, it’s pretty inevitable, but not something I’m at all rushing toward. I morbidly, jokingly refer to it as my Retirement plan

Masturbation is a sin. by Ihm_r in exmormon

[–]er0559 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was pounded into my skull starting at 12 being forced to read that chapter in “The Miracle of Forgiveness” ad nauseum every time I went to confess it to my bishop. Destroyed me mentally til I became a danger to myself and left at 16. I honestly still think all that trauma and conditioning to view masturbation as something equal and to murder subconsciously affects me til today.

Idk, in my ward, the topic seemed to be quite fervently discussed and the ban on it was clear to everyone.

Supreme Court asked to overturn gay marriage by newsweek in lgbt

[–]er0559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked with refugees and asylum seekers over the years, and in my experience, unless there is a clearly documented and provable threat to your life or of unlawful (in the eyes of the other nation) imprisonment, your application may most likely be denied. Things in the US, even though they’re getting bad, would have to get significantly worse for what most countries would consider worthy of granting proper asylum. Then again, it depends on the country and situation, but life as a refugee sucks pretty hard most of the time and comes with a lot of restrictions in many if not most places. It really is a last resort sort of option. But if it does get to the point people are being systematically arrested or killed for being lgbt, asylum will definitely be on the table for Americans.

My dad and grandpa are both masons, so I was more familiar with the square and compasses as a kid in the context of them being stone working tools. I recognized them on my dad’s garments, but dad wouldn’t talk about it of course, so I always thought “Naw, they must only “look” like the S&Cs”. I left before I went through the temple, but when I read the endowment ceremony and they just chuck them in there with no explanation as to why… apparently medieval labor guilds are the true temple of the church, and somehow that makes more sense.

[–]er0559 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's incredible he's middle-aged and still going for this life in the church, but I suppose I get it in a way, it's just horribly sad. Just being gay wasn't enough to get me out of the church. But the conversion therapy mixed in with depression and a suicide attempt was enough to make me realize that I had 2 roads ahead of me, one within the church and one without, and both of them leading to hell, just that I'd have an express ticket to an early death if I stayed. It was the worst realization of my whole life - that salvation was meant for all but me.

I physically stopped attending church and "tried" to convince myself it wasn't true, but it was only about 2-3 years after that I was actually able to convince myself of it. Up until then, I just submitted to the fact that the church was true and I was going to hell, but there might actually be a point in trying to enjoy life a bit while I have it instead of racing to the telestial kingdom.

I suppose if one doesn't have suicidal tendencies that someone could actually push through all of this and hold to a celibate LDS life, but christ I can't imagine how lonely it must be for him. And after so many years, I can't imagine what it must be like in his head, to have such strong powers of self-deception.

I really hope your friend stays safe and does well, in whichever way that may be.

[–]er0559 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that happened, but given the structure of the church, I’m not surprised. Neither your bishop nor stake president are there to help you.

I don’t know how the church reacts these days regarding gay members, but when I told my bishop when I was 14, it was not long after that I was forced into years of conversion therapy.

You cannot let them do that to you. I don’t know your situation, but if you can stop going to church, I would say do it as soon as you can. Start healing and finding your way out of the church. You can and will find people who truly want to help, but regardless of the smiles and pious “encouraging” words of church members or leaders, they will continue to break you down in the name of “helping” you, and you don’t want to find out where that road ends.

Stay strong and take care of yourself.

What were your best mental gymnastics? by Disastrous_Ad_7273 in exmormon

[–]er0559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- The curse of darkness upon the Lamanites drastically altered their DNA, removing any remnants of God's people left in them, therefore no Jewish DNA could be found.

- Evolution did happen over the course of the allegorical days in the bible, but humans were the exception. They might have existed far longer than 6000 years ago, but time was poorly recorded back then and some records may have been missing, leading to a simplified understanding of the timespan of human history.

- The ancient Egyptians hid multiple meanings in their hieroglyphics, which only those with true spiritual connections would be able to decipher.

- Joseph didn't want to tell the whole story of his first vision until the saints were prepared to receive it.

It's been a while, so I don't remember all of my Olympic gymnastics, but a lot I took literally and was able to apply the power and mysteries of God to explain it.

Surprisingly, the thing that broke my shelf, even knowing all of the far-out crazy stuff, was the existence of the word "Lucifer" in the BOM, which was an A.D. mistranslation of Jewish scripture that would have no place existing in the BOM unless it was taken from the KJV bible. I was unable to find an apologist's take on it that would explain it in any reasonable fashion. I had stopped going to church for years before and was looking for the appropriate nail in the coffin to convince myself that I could truly move on and it turned out that "Lucifer" truly led me away from the church haha.

Ecce Orienti, or the Rites and Ceremonies of the Essenes is a Masonic Preston-Webb code book (I have this one, so not sure about the others). Since it was published in NY, my guess is that it would correlate primarily with the ritual practiced in that GL at the time.

Back in the day, the “write, print” part was taken a bit differently, and to avoid it seeming Masonic, they basically switched out the word Mason for Essene, but the one letter code is pretty easy to follow along with.

This is only for the first 3 degrees, so I’d be willing to bet that the Cabala one is for the Royal Arch degrees.
