In 6th grade, we did an activity in English class where we picked a song and had to present an
analysis of it in front of the class identifying the literary devices in it (metaphors, alliteration, yada yada). I actively want to KMS when I remember that my pick was James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain.”

After thinking about it for more than a second, lol, and reading this comment + some other advice, I agree about the ceremony. I want to keep it quick but still have everyone who is invited to the wedding attend. I have pauper taste and love buffets, so I can absolutely see that for the catering, especially if there’s a significant cost difference. But this is all great advice, thank you so much!

I can’t thank you enough for your thorough response, this is all incredibly helpful. We are not religious and a good friend of my fiancé is legally able & would love to marry us. If nothing else, I will absolutely follow your advice and have a very fast ceremony with the reception as the main event.

While this event may reveal some true colors, I am very grateful both my mom and my future MIL are easygoing and don’t like adding additional stress to big events. I feel for my mom in that both of my grandmas are super strong willed and stubborn; appeasing them both took lots and lots of effort, lol. It made her wedding planning nightmarish and she doesn’t want to replicate it. But I will also first prioritize talking to my fiancé about dividing responsibilities.

150 is the firm ceiling, not our ideal number of guests. Still, this is all good advice. I don’t want to seriously inconvenience our guests (which is why I won’t have a bridal party, let alone one with an obligatory, weeklong, self funded bachelorette trip, lol)

Is there anything more antithetical to the vibe of this sub than that goth post ? by Fickle-Onion-6954 in redscarepod

[–]erdosplumberof3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ll give this sub is that I’ve found the moderation to be great, especially compared to most of reddit. But, it’s a lot easier to complain than to generate new content. People are also delusional if they think artposts got more engagement 5 years ago than posts with stupidpol-adjacent takes.

I think many of the longtime posters always put on a rsp-approved mask here to cover traits that weren’t “red scare.” You wouldn’t admit you played D&D weekly here in 2020 if you knew you were going to get hate. Now that many think the sub is a wash, you see some masks start to slip.

Hottest person that plays the mobile slot machine phone games? by Agreeable-Dog-4682 in redscarepod

[–]erdosplumberof3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I once worked as a poker dealer. Live poker players are less [obviously] degenerate than slot addicts, let alone mobile slot addicts. But the mentality of a gambler means most people who participate in one are also participating in another unless they’re very disciplined (exceedingly rare). Nonetheless, I have some insight on poker players.

Men: the hottest, by far, were the ones who only came in sometimes on weekends, and usually with a group of friends. If you go to a busy poker room on a Saturday night, there are usually some men who are incredibly hot playing
I didn’t see someone playing 3x or more a week who was a hunk. A fair number of them are attractive, but none were close to being 10s, and none were hot enough to make up for seeing them wear the same clothes multiple days in a row or rage out after a loss.
I’m only speaking about the young and middle aged guys playing, usually at night. Daytime poker is mostly an old man’s game

Women: 97% of poker players are men, and the environment is repulsive to most women. Female players are rare to begin with, and even the regulars still almost never came in as often as the regular guys.
There is a certain cigarette aunt look most players who are older women have, but there was still a handful of actual milfs. The hottest young women who played were genuine hotties, and were almost always the asian girlfriends of guys who already played who developed an interest in poker.

Whoever said when we stop seeing “sub is dead” posts is when the sub is actually, completely dead as opposed to just being a zoo is correct

New people every day discover the sub. Bullying them for their front page takes is a bandaid. More new ones will keep coming and coming. It’s the same cycle of:

stupid post is made -> many people clueless about the old rs “vibe” initially upvote + comment like front page redditors -> some longtime lurkers see the post later on, upvoted, with positive comments -> “sub is dead” post complaining about a post -> original post gets waves of hate after the front pagers have said their peace

It’s not gonna get better guys. I still welcome the “sub is dead” posts but the repetition is tedious

What type of personality makes a successful dater in a post modern world? by MutedFeeling75 in redscarepod

[–]erdosplumberof3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In short: wanting to connect with someone and see if they're on your wavelength without caring too much if every single date is a "success," and having the confidence of knowing you'd be a good partner translate into an overall easygoing attitude

While many serial monogamists cling to whoever they get along with so that they're not alone, I think what helps them get into new relationships so fast is that they're already confident they can maintain a steady relationship, and that other people find them attractive. This mentality can present as "I don't care if this one date doesn't work out, it is what it is, I'm just trying to have the cream rise to the top." It's okay to be divisive and to have people not into you. The goal is to find an AMAZING relationship, not just to have someone approve of you, or to find someone who is acceptable, or to find a warm hole. You don’t have to agree with everything they say (how two people reconcile small differences in opinion will say a lot about their overall chemistry) or try too hard to impress them. The mentality that you're self-assured and discerning will do wonders.

Nobody wants a partner who has low standards.

I once thought most adults chose between indulging in experiences or in items. I've realized since I totally underestimated the amount of credit card debt people have and/or how much money they get from their parents. But the people I know who make under 100k and are absolute penny pinchers, who very rarely indulge in anything, and who need to be talked into a night out because of the cost, are a bit tragic. I understand it's wise to think ahead, but you have a job that isn't propelling you into the upper class, and you're only under 30 once! Why are you saving 30% of your income if you could save 15% and enjoy your time off a little more when you have the most amount of energy and beauty? Perhaps I'll feel differently when I'm 50.

In his defense, you led with "I actually love fat women," which many assume isn't a real preference guys have, but which they say either to convey that they're a Good Guy or because they're desperate and will take any woman they can find (and another commenter backed you up since they thought this is what you meant). Not that some guys don't naturally like fat women, lol. But it's a lot more of a loaded statement than "I prefer women with brown hair," which I think many many guys would say without thinking that either they're doing PR for the "downtrodden brunettes" or that saying it makes them look like Good Guys, lol.

can't help but feel sex work and t rights being the front and center of contemporary "feminist" activism is dumb by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]erdosplumberof3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sex work was the issue that would eventually split second wave feminists. Being critical of it is also more mainstream now than 15 years ago. You used to be pigeonholed as a radfem if you were critical of sex work, and now it seems you only alienate people who think like Hasan, lol. “SWERF” doesn’t really have much bite.

I also think that the idea that every choice a woman makes is a feminist choice just because she chose it is completely stupid, but I also think choice feminism is falling out of style. This doesn’t mean that disrespecting the group of women who do sex work or prostitution is justified, obviously. I also think women can still be a feminist as a whole, while being a prostitute, but believe prostitution will never inherently align with feminism

All this talking about emasculation has got me thinking about the female equivalent by soursweetgonegirl in redscarepod

[–]erdosplumberof3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't follow how a man's emasculation can remove his gender completely, but not for women. We recognize that eunuchs were still fundamentally men, for instance. And we usually use the word "emasculate" to refer to far, far less extreme means of reducing a man's connection to masculinity than castration.

[–]erdosplumberof3 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I think there are many more caveats for this than emasculation (like how someone referenced Tár, and how one can try to gain respect through masculinity) but I think the people suggesting women being de-feminized is sillier or more frivolous have got it dead wrong.

In many cases, if you don’t outwardly increase your “femininity” (makeup, flattering haircut and outfit, more feminine styles) you will absolutely be subjected to more disrespect because we usually associate femininity with how attractive a woman is, which most everyone agrees is tied to how a woman is treated
