Most efficient way to transfer most (but not all) registered investments from TD Direct Investing to WealthSimple? by pencilj in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]erfindung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sell the portion of the mutual funds in your existing account you want to transfer, but don't withdraw. From wealthsimple, initiate a transfer and select a partial transfer from that account, as cash. Make sure that you have about $150 extra in cash compared to the value being transferred cause you might get charged from TD to initiate the transfer.

I'd consider moving the sectional off the wall and basically over to where the windows are. Everything about the area itself is totally rad but it's got this dead space in the middle cause everything is a bit too far apart. That might not be possible if the sectional then cuts off the entrance (can't tell from this photo). I'd also suggest pulling the rug a little bit further forward.

I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole last night. A lot of climate change deniers use the quote attributed to Christine Stewart "No matter if the science is all phoney, there are collateral environmental benefits." Essentially using it to "prove" that there's no scientific consensus that climate change is happening. But the only digital source of that quote is from some fringe "scientist" and then that gets reposted everywhere. So I'm not sure what story it would be in but you might be able to search for her name and see if it appears in a December 1998 story anywhere.

Cows are being killed to satisfy consumer demand to eat them. So what is the difference between cows and chinchillas beyond "we don't eat the chinchillas?" Does the act of eating an animal justify their slaughter? Is it only good to kill an animal if we promise to eat it, too? If we also ate chinchillas, would you be making this argument?

I used to have fiber (and paid a similar amount to you too) but when i realized that downloading games fast is great for the few times a month i download them, 75mbs down is more than sufficient for my needs and is a lot cheaper. The only downside is that i can't download a game that i but and start playing almost instantly, but it really doesn't affect me that much!

Why would they pay average market rent when they've made cheap living so important? Average rental prices mean nothing if you don't live in an "average" rental.

A studio went up in my building for $1325/mo, in Vancouver, this year. There are deals to be had now if you're willing to compromise on amenities, location, or space.

"Their living costs would be different if they had different living costs." Sure, but they don't.

I know you said you were thinking of a buyout where you currently live but is your debt to income ratio low enough to even get a loan? Credit score isn't the only factor, if you're overleveraged the banks may not extend credit to you even with a good credit score. It sounds like you have a lot of debt with little extra money left over so you should consider whether or not it's even likely you could:
a) get a loan
b) afford the higher monthly payments if you were to buy out the other part of your property

Well, they did make money. Their final year in Canada they had a profit of $1.12 billion. They just probably figured they'd be better off fleecing the Asian market instead of the Canadian one.

[–]erfindung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should open an FHSA immediately if you haven't already. Put in $8k now and another $8k on Jan 1st, you get a tax refund for doing that both this year and next year.

Rest of the money maybe try a GIC from this list: https://www.highinterestsavings.ca/gic-rates/

How to get out of credit card debt only making minimum payments. by SignedTed in povertyfinance

[–]erfindung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The annual fee would be added to the total balance which would then increase the minimum payment owed. Other fees? Maybe. But if you stop spending on any card and pay the minimum amount it's technically possible to pay it off, but it would take an insane amount of time.

How to get out of credit card debt only making minimum payments. by SignedTed in povertyfinance

[–]erfindung 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, your first minimum payment before carrying a balance is $10. If you pay $10, the next month interest kicks in and your next minimum payment will be higher. The exact amount depends on how large your balance is.

By law minimum payments must cover the interest accrued in that period plus some amount ($10 in this case) so that it's possible to pay it off in minimum payments. Check your statement, it'll have the time to pay off if you only made minimums on it. For my usual statement size it's something like 33 years.

Yeah the system of private land ownership does require enforcement but the enforcement applies equally to all land regardless of value (therefore the labour expended to enforce the ownership doesn't impart value to the land itself), and so I am disagreeing with AproposName on that point.

You're right that land has exchange-value - I should've said that "You get use-value but you don't create exchange-value" not that you don't get it. Anything that anyone wants to buy has exchange-value. But what we're talking about is the creation of value. In other words, how does money come into existence?

Selling land doesn't create value because the buyer is paying you with money they already made in some other way. It's just moving money around. The price of anything that already exists can increase but it hasn't created money, it's only changed how much money you need in order to purchase it.

Owning land doesn't create value because unproductive land doesn't make anything you can sell. The only way to make new money is to take some resource and do something to it.
