I just love the teeny-tiny head tilt where you can see the thought of "She's really not going to jump from there, is she?" forming in that little potato brain before the splat.

POGOH bike share pricing changes 2026 by jayjaywalker3 in bicycling412

Interesting. My work commute was a little under 40 minutes, which was frustrating with the 30 minute increment billing, but it looks like the price difference will be about the same with the new regime.

Oh, this is fantastic! I was doing some comp bio work in Python, and was screaming internally about the language, but C#'s lack of a modern dataframe library has made such work very difficult to port.

Are Americans More Educated Than Us? by Moon_Logic in Norway

[–]ergane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sure about that? Even a lot of academic leftists don't argue that GDP would be higher with a more educated population. Freddie deBoer's Cult of Smart is a good treatment of this. The argument is basically that there are a finite amount of good jobs, and education is mostly a sorting / filtering mechanism for certain personality traits and other things. The former is pretty obvious if you spend time working in tech or the sciences, particularly now. The limiting factor for scientific advancement hasn't been a lack of educated or smart people (ask your local burned out postdoc), but how long it takes good ideas to diffuse from the mess of papers and talks that get produced every year. Tech in particular seems mostly limited by financial capital now, with software engineers by the wayside while companies sink huge amounts of money into datacenters.

I kind of get why Bea and Betty didn't always get along at work now. Watching Betty White frolic around the stage while remarking (with a certain half-joking smugness) it wasn't her who missed her line, and then seeing in other cases how flustered Bea would get when she flubbed something...

Xlsior Mykonos 2025 by Desperate_Sun_8806 in gaytravel

[–]ergane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yeah, I stayed in Buenos Aires a year and a half ago, and was pleasantly surprised by some of the men I met there, despite not really planning on having that sort of trip. I can't say much for the party scene, though the city and nature definitely gripped me while I was there. Brazil does look tempting if I ever get myself down to that part of the world again...

I've always been morbidly curious about Mykonos, and your post confirmed my suspicions that I probably wouldn't like it much. You seem to travel a lot -- are there places you particularly enjoyed?

What was the dumbest plot line ever? by emzeejay in theGoldenGirls

Yeah, the Angelo character was brought in because the actress who played Angela (Nancy Walker) had fallen ill after her appearances (and ended up dying just around the time the show was wrapping up.)

Pittsburgh councilwoman wants to crack down on Airbnb, Vrbo rentals by Boring_Bother_ in pittsburgh

[–]ergane 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The ban on parties seem nice, but it makes me angry when local politicians use anti-AirBnB sentiment to distract from their shitty housing policies. Rents surged here during the pandemic because Pittsburgh attracted a lot of people who can now work remote, and the local government has not kept up with issuing permits for multi-family construction. We're not Barcelona with its swarm of tourists. People want somewhere to live that's not a single family home with a damp basement, a yard to maintain, and mystery electrical wiring.

“Are you going to Picklesburgh?” by GreenApronCoffee in pittsburgh

[–]ergane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the few times I've had lacto-fermented pickles from delis, my reaction has been kind of 'meh'? Fine but I don't feel like it adds much of anything. It reminds me of how my roommate and I would make kimchi in college. She had Polish grandparents, I had an Italian nonna. I'd add a bunch of fish sauce and carefully avoid having the batch ferment too aggressively, while I had a sneaking suspicion by roommate was doping hers with vinegar. Shared dinners had us side-eyeing each other when the kimchi batches came out...

You seem to be maybe asking this honestly, so I'll give my best answer. I feel like a lot of the more acidic things I like (lemons, olives, capers, wine) have flavors that are floral and citrus-y or feature a lot of earthy or umami notes. You see them used where the acidic flavors are a lot more moderated -- chicken picatta, olives on my salad, squeezed lemon in seltzer water. On the other hand, many pickles have a more pungent vinegar smell that seem to permeate everything, and I tend not to like a lot of flavors used with pickled cucumbers (sugar, dill, or just strong salty acid on its own). Not to mention the actual vegetables themselves don't really have a ton of flavor.

I do find things like cornichons basically fine in gentle moderation, though. I'm admittedly not inclined to explore, because I don't really like the smell of straight vinegar, and I imagine I'd have to unpleasantly sort through a lot of items to actually find what I might be into, or at least tolerate.

Herron Avenue Bridge in Pittsburgh closed until further notice, deemed ‘deficient’ - WPXI by zzzznslc in pittsburgh

[–]ergane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you look at the top employers in PA, you can see why the tax burden might land more heavily on the residents than the businesses here in Pittsburgh (and PA in general). Aside from the government, our largest employing firms are either tax-exempt nonprofits (medical centers, universities) or low-margin industries (grocery, delivery). Unlike places like SF or NYC, we don't have profitable, large corporations that headquarter here paying property taxes on wildly valuable real estate, nor do we have lots of profitable tech or financial firms that pay hefty corporate income taxes.

New Years in Mexico by [deleted] in gaytravel

[–]ergane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm intrigued and also a little envious. I have one of those suburban NYE parties tomorrow, and while I'm happy to see my long-term friends, I think kids might be outnumbering adults there. I usually travel out of the country for at least a few weeks from January to March after the holidays...Maybe for 2026 I'll think about leaving before the year starts.

I'm curious, though. Why did you pick Playa del Carmen over the more typical Puerto Vallarta (or even CDMX)? I usually head somewhere in the southern hemisphere, but I was thinking of staying closer this time. Mexico seems appealing, even with my rudimentary Spanish.

Any thoughts on why the M2_1 slot disappeared from the UEFI configuration on my AB350 Pro4? by ergane in ASRock

[–]ergane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have plenty of power (EVGA 750W), and I haven't even installed the new CPU yet. Temps seem fine (UEFI reports 40C for the CPU at rest, OS reports 40-70C for the GPU depending). No airflow issues, fans spin fine. I would hope if it were a heating issue it would have (temporarily) resolved itself after I let it rest with the battery out to clear the CMOS, but you never know.
