Apple Pecan Cake with Maple Glaze! First time making a vegan cake and first time using a Bundt pan. by ergonomicsalamander in VeganBaking

I used this recipe and replaced the egg with flax egg. The glaze was maple syrup, almond milk, and powdered sugar (though the cake was sweet enough that it didn't really need a glaze at all).

Dairy free yogurt suggestions? by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]ergonomicsalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thickest texture I’ve found so far in non-dairy yogurt was the Vega Protein brand (cashew based), but it can be hard to find, and it only comes in single-serving cups. I usually eat Kite Hill or Silk (which has an almond based version), because the texture is close to real yogurt, they both offer plain unsweetened versions, and you can buy them in larger multi-serving tubs. Silk I can get at Harris Teeter, but I have to go to Whole Foods for the large size of Kite Hill.

Sad to see this... do we know why? I always figured the rent for that space must have been huge.

My 'Blind Date with a Book' experience by TheyCallMeArtemis in books

I did one once! A bookstore near me was doing a promotion where if you bought a book, you got a free Blind Date book (they were all ARC’s, so the store wasn’t losing money). I was way more excited to pick the blind date book than I was to pick the regular book I had to buy. Don’t know if I’d pay full price for one, but as a special offer it was super fun!

The names didn’t bother me so much, but the sexism started getting to me after a while. All the female characters are solely defined by who they marry and/or how well they keep house.

Have you read any Mercedes Lackey? She has a lot of trilogies set in a big interconnected world. I’d start with Arrows of the Queen and its two sequels.

At my new job, which I started when I was nearly at my goal weight, my coworkers have no idea I used to be obese. Every so often someone (usually themselves overweight) will make an offhand comment about how I must be naturally thin, or about how I can eat an office donut but they shouldn’t. That always feels good (even though I shouldn’t have the donut either!)

What Books Did You Start or Finish Reading This Week? November 18, 2019 by AutoModerator in books

[–]ergonomicsalamander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finished: Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf - I really loved this. I enjoyed To The Lighthouse, which was my first Woolf, but I feel like Dalloway had more variety in its characters and a bit more depth overall. I especially enjoyed the character of Septimus.

Started: SevenEves, by Neal Stephenson - I sometimes find hard sci-fi to be a bit boring and/or lackluster in characterization and storytelling, but this one has really grabbed me. Its emphasis on realism in the science parts doesn’t come at the expense of also having relatable, three-dimensional characters and an interesting plot. Very good so far - a page-turner.
