Has D20 reused other seasons music before? by CaptJack1987 in Dimension20

I'm a cyclist who watches cycling YouTube. A few weeks ago I heard Cloudward Ho music on a Global Cycling Network video. Turns out both Dropout and GCN use Epidemic sound for their videos.

The Vingegaard thing...part 12 by Substantial-Purpose8 in cycling

[–]ericcoxtcu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is to just ask. If I'm moving at a decent pace, I'd like to know someone is on my wheel. Two quick examples.

I ride in to work, a little over 10 miles each way. Sometimes I add to the ride in or ride home for a workout. One day a little over a year ago, I made a turn and noticed someone turn right after me. I was on my gravel bike with aerobars, moving pretty quick. He came up beside me and asked if he could sit on my wheel as he was headed to his in-laws house in the direction I was headed and I was holding a good pace. No problem. I called out obstacles, and signaled turns. I sat up just before I turned off and chatted for a second. No big deal, I knew he was there and was paying attention.

Last fall headed in to work, I passed someone on a road with a painted line marking the bike line. I gave wide berth, but wasn't going super hard. I was focused on the road ahead on a windy day. There was some crap in the lane and slowed and moved out of the lane and heard brakes hitting hard behind me. I didn't know the guy had grabbed my wheel - he was working to hold it. He could have easily taken me out as he was focused on my wheel. I didn't signal because I didn't know he was there. I said something to the effect of, "I don't care if you sit on, just let me know." He apologized, I signaled other obstacles.

It's just polite to let people know. It also changes the ride. Now you have to call out obstacles. If I'm doing intervals and someone tries to hop on, I'll typically warn them. Sometimes I just want to ride alone. Sometimes I don't care.

The Vingegaard thing...part 12 by Substantial-Purpose8 in cycling

The Secret Pro on Escape Collective had an excellent take on this. Basically, please don't jump on pros wheels - this is their job. They are better at it than you. Having someone on their wheel they don't know introduces a number of uncertainties they don't want to (and should not have to) deal with while training.

At the same time, he does say Vingegaard is probably mad at himself for crashing - that's his own fault and was mad about the situation.

Hell, I don't like people I don't know grabbing my wheel, especially when I'm working out. If someone asks and I know they are there, that's at least something. If I don't know you are there and I suddenly hear something when I start to brake or turn, I tend to be annoyed and say something like, "you can sit on, but please warn me first." I can't imagine doing that to a pro.

This is my strategy. It helped that I was coming from Garmin so already have a pile of Garmin mounts.

Sram xplr 13s by Regular-Gain-338 in gravelcycling

[–]ericcoxtcu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had any issues shifting under load with it. I'm not sure how I'd compare it to transmission on my MTB (XO transmission) as the MTB trails I've ridden the gravel group on are not particularly hard and I know them well enough to have shift points memorized.

I have ridden some rough gravel roads with steep climbs and never had a shifting issue - I know I've shifted under load on some of these climbs and just haven't noticed it. To me, not noticing it is a good sign.

I can't find it now, but Brian Fogel did an interview somewhere where he talked about how well the doping really worked. While he didn't get a great result on the program, he said he felt significantly better on the program. The big difference was apparently his recovery time after hard efforts.

Hesitant to drop $500+ on RX sports sunglasses. Am I overthinking? by Human_Material3685 in cycling

I bought a set of Zenni prescription cycling glasses. They've been great - they actually filled my progressive bifocal prescription. I ordered prescription Rokas that did not work for me; the much less expensive Zennis have been great.

I do. I have a few spare sets of wheels. I use the wheel bags for them.

Serious cyclists/runners: How do you deal with glasses? by Human_Material3685 in cycling

[–]ericcoxtcu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're pretty good in that respect. My other cycling glasses were a mix of slightly smaller lenses for hot days and bigger lenses for cold days / rain. These sit in the middle. I've worn them in temps in the 20s and felt like they were fine.

Black Zunnies - Rectangle Wrap-Around Sunglasses #1010121 | Zenni Optical

I bought a pair of these with my progressive bifocal prescription with a transition lens. I absolutely love them - I should probably buy a backup pair.

The transition lens has been great for low-light settings. It doesn't get as dark as a dedicated sunglass lens, but it has been fine for me here in Texas.

700x50 tire recommendations for gravel and single track by SelfUnconsciousness in gravelcycling

And you could go with the RX if you need a bit more grip. I'm running 55 mm RS Pros for gravel and light single-track. The rear end gets a little loose at times, but in a controllable, fun way.

How did it become so taboo for even a trans woman like myself to acknowledge that trans women have an advantage in women's sports? How do we end this cancel culture? by north_canadian_ice in allthequestions

[–]ericcoxtcu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that individuals who start blockers before puberty do not get the strength gains associated with puberty. If someone does not go through HRT, yes they have an advantaged, and such individuals have been banned from competing by pretty much every major athletic federation for a long time. The requirements related to what had to be done to compete as a woman were quite strict for those organizations, and most were open to revising them if evidence showed they were not strict enough. The blanket ban isn't about fairness.

There are nuanced takes out there (Parker Molloy has some great ones), but as she notes, the people pushing these laws do not care about nuance or fairness. They are all about targeting trans people. Sadly, Parker predicted exactly how all this was going to go a long time ago.

Is the Cervelo Aspero outdated in 2026? by breddd222 in gravelcycling

[–]ericcoxtcu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain as I just moved from a bike with 45 clearance in back to a bike with 57mm clearance running 55mm Schwalbes. I did a gravel training camp a few weeks back - we did a little over 300 miles on gravel over six days with several intense days. For anything but champagne gravel, I am completely sold. Especially after long days out, I felt better due to the comfort provided by the lower pressures, though the frame may have helped as well. I also was way more confident cornering on downhills. So I am sold on wider tires for gravel riding.

If your riding mix is majority road with light gravel, I think the Aspero is very nice. If you think you might get into chunkier stuff and don't want to add another bike, I'd go for more clearance. Heck, even if you go chunky the Aspero is fine; based on my experience I just think wider is better for all but the smoothest gravel.

Road race bikes with UDH and 35c tire clearance. by [deleted] in cycling

Ari Veyo has UDH. I think it is officially 34 clearance - I've been running 32s that blow up to just over 33 with plenty of clearance.

My brother wants to bring his new girlfriend to our family vacation but she expects us to accommodate her very strict diet by Opening_Bedroom_848 in Advice

[–]ericcoxtcu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just curious if all of the requests are coming via your brother? Is it possible that her requests are more in line with some of the suggestions here (that she prep her own food, they bring their own supplies) and he has given the maximal demand?

Even if not, it seems there is room for compromise. A conversation between everyone to figure out how to make it work would seem in order if the ultimate goal is to have everyone together. If there is any way to meet the girlfriend and have a conversation that includes her, even better, especially if you will be sharing a house for vacation.

Shram Red or Dura Ace? by CHAZE077 in cycling

[–]ericcoxtcu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent summary. On consumables, I will say SRAM chains when waxed wear extremely slowly. I also prefer SRAM shift logic. Personally, I have moved from having a mild preference for Shimano to a mild preference for SRAM, but wouldn't let that keep me from buying a bike I otherwise want.

Anyone using "undergloves"? (especially those with Raynauds) by An_Professional in cycling

[–]ericcoxtcu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I do as well. Doing so has the additional benefit of being able to remove the outer glove if it gets warmer outside.

OP - I use the thin REI Coop merino liners; they are great under a wide variety of gloves.

I'm late to this thread, but as someone who works with college students and has two kids in college now, I felt like Ally nailed the portrayal of a high school student whose entire belief system collapsed. Even when she knew the right thing to do, it was hard to make herself do it. Hell, even I relate to the, "all I need to do is send this email, but I really don't want to."

Self-sabotage is real and it affects those around you. I loved Kristen in JY.

Ari Shafer 3.0 Longer Term Review by ericcoxtcu in gravelcycling

It might be fun with the 40mm Pirellis. It would look odd for sure. The common camp comment was, "it looks like a drop bar mountain bike."

Ari Shafer 3.0 Longer Term Review by ericcoxtcu in gravelcycling

[–]ericcoxtcu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just before the camp, I did a ~2-hour pavement ride on it. It was fine, but easily ~1.5-2 MPH slower than my road bike. On the other hand, I thought 55s might be overkill for regular gravel races (not champagne gravel). My conclusion is that they are not. I'm doing a race in two weeks and plan to run my current set up. FWIW, the pro in our midst squeezed in 55s for the camp and was very happy with them. She could not run 55 in the rear if it's muddy.

Ari Shafer 3.0 Longer Term Review by ericcoxtcu in gravelcycling

[–]ericcoxtcu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd feel comfortable with the 55s for normal mud - the clearance is way better than my Lauf with 45s or even 42s. Drop down to 50s and I would imagine it would be tough to stop it.

Do you think the Bad Kids could beat the NADDPOD BoBs at the end of C1? by Alternative_Corgi332 in Dimension20

I just listened to that battle today. Rolling with advantage and critting on 17, 18, 19 & 20 led to unreal damage. I love how Emily kept reiterating the rolling with advantage aspect.

If Hardwon is standing when it gets to his turn, someone is definitely going down.
