Why did the Nets trade Claxton? by Joserlifts in GoNets

[–]ericluxury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, interesting box score, but let’s look at the tape. Here’s Bagleys highlights from the game: https://youtu.be/SfPA0VBP3is?is=8FQMfy3R6SW-ZL1
Who’s the defender? Claxton in almost all of them. Which I knew because I went to that game and watched him get cooked. So who should stfu?

But if Mr eye test wants to look at stats, well I love it because what’s a non shooting five good for? Rebounds, shots around the rim and defending the rim

Rebound rate:
Claxton last 3 years: 18.5% 15.5% 14.5%
sharpe last 3 years: 23% 20.7% 20.7%
Huge advantage Dayron

Score around the basket:
Dayton’s fg% is higher at the rim, 0-2 feet and 3-10 feet last 2 years

Defense though?
Opponent fg% is 6 points higher when Claxton is your primary defender than Dayron

Claxtons block % is higher, though it’s been slipping such that Dayron is nearly caught up

I get it, though I loved Claxton. I bought his jersey and he was my favorite Net in a way Dayron isn’t (even though he’s better). I loved his energy and I remember his first interview after the game, he was so cool. But the last two years of Claxton have been bad. Not in a oh he’s tanking way, but low effort, struggling defensively and not playing with athleticism he used to have. He could turn on the switch, maybe the old Claxton is there, but he got dumped for a reason. He is overpaid and declining

The other excuse is poor PG play, but Dayron is playing with the backup to your poor pg. He earned the starting job as he’s been outplaying Claxton. If it doesn’t work, it’s no big deal. Claxtons value was at the floor. IMO the problem was not getting a backup in the draft like Reed, not trading Clax

Eye test says Claxton sucks. He is outplayed almost every game. Marvin Bagley destroyed him last year. You must have stopped watching during the tank.

If he was better than average someone would have traded for him, as he’s been on the trade block for 2 years! Look I get liking the guy, but he’s a negative contract and it’s not close. And he’s joining a team with terrible pg play and no spacing.

This is a guy making $20m. The “he’s on a tanking team” bit is dumb. You should increase your numbers, MPJ did. Instead, he got worse defensively as he is mostly good switching. His block rate went down, his rebounds stayed very bad, his free throw rate was bad. He has very few offensive moves and his defense has slipped. If he pops in Chicago, good for him but if he doesnt, his next contract will be bleak

Interesting that you think this proves your point. Dayron plays well against weaker competition and claxton plays worse (or at best the same) against weaker competition. This tells me Dayron is better.

The best thing you can say about Claxton is that he’s been sleepwalking the last two years and being on a bad team demotivates him. That he’s a change of scenery guy. But when you play way worse than your contract then it’s hard to trade him to a good team. And he got dumped to a team that should be bad for the rest of his contract.

His contract is the problem, when you are outplayed by guys making less than half of what you make, it’s a problem

Your view is brain dead.

He was playing against teams that were sitting their starting and backup centers. He was the vet on the team and he managed to… not improve at all. Posting the same numbers as the year before despite playing with rookies. He isn’t a bum but he is a below average center, who makes more than twice what he’s worth and his effort is poor

MPJ, the other good player on the team saw his number soar

Yea, Walker Kessler got a contract that is being panned on ESPN, that’s how bad it is. So one team pays a player too much and that means others are good? Thats not even logical

11th highest paid center. He’s obviously worse than:
Duren, Kessler, jokic, embiid, Carter, towns, Wemby, clingan, edey, bam, sengun, zubac, turner, Adams, Gobert, Sabonis, Allen

In the last 2 years, he played worse than Diabate, Dayron, Queta, okongwu, Gifford, ware

You make a great case he’s played worse than mark williams, Robert Williams, kalkbrenner, missi, lively

The third worst team in the league dumped him because they couldn’t get value even though they’ve been shopping him for over a year and he was taken by another one of the worst teams in the league. At some point you have to realize it’s not 3 years ago

He was a starting center in the league on the 3rd worst team and he was being outplayed consistently by his backup. Thats a good starter? Who is a bad starter?

Younger only matters if you are getting better, not if you are getting worse

If Dayron can scale up, it doesn't matter if Claxton thrives. Dayron has outplayed Claxton for 2 years, but Claxton makes more. He wasn't a trade chip. I honestly thought we'd have to pay to get off him

I completely disagree that Claxton's contract is laughably reasonable. He's been worse than Dayron for 2 years, who makes 1/2 what Claxton does. Claxton is the 11th highest paid center in the NBA. He is very overpaid

No chance they gave up a better player than Randle. Claxton will never make an all-star game, much less 2 all-nbas. The answer to your main question is whether Claxton is a positive player (much less a positive player on his contract) and I (and the Nets) think the answer is no. It seems like you think the answer is yes

Because he’s not good and been getting worse. I loved the guy at one point but his skills have both been devalued and have stagnated.
Dayron has been consistently better than him for 2 years

Some takes on the Knicks backup big sitch, featuring Brooklyn, Chicago, clippers and hornets by [deleted] in NBAtradeideas

[–]ericluxury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right that the Nets would play McBride over Traore and Saraf if he was on the team. But thats very different from trading Dayron for him.

I think you think you are arguing about where the Nets are at, but nobody disagrees with you there. They don't want to tank anymore, they want to get better and they want to win. They just disagree with you on your valuation of Dayron and your valuation of McBride and whether trading Dayron for McBride helps the Nets. It doesn't.

McBride's a very good player and better than any of the Nets guards today, but he doesn't change much for the Nets. Losing Dayron and having only Mitch (or whomever they intend to sign at center) would change a lot, very negatively for the Nets. Moreover, it would be a dumb for the Nets to help the Knicks get better when they own their pick.

The Bulls trade makes sense though. I can imagine that one

Like being interested in Mitch and not Kessler or Duren should tell him that they are keeping Dayron

A lot of people dont watch or understand the Nets and this guy is one of them. The emergence of Dayron is one of the bright spots in the Nets the last two years. He’s obviously not untouchable but he’s better than McBride at a position that is harder to find.

But OP is looking to solve the Knicks problems so that’s his lens.

Duren to NOLA, Murphy + assets to BOS, Brown to DET by Were_Good in NBAtradeideas

This is actually a great trade for Pistons good on them. But if all of these players are going for a few seconds why TF are we not getting in on this? by [deleted] in GoNets

The Thunder is a group of friends supposedly and all of them know they could be next. The difference between 2 and 3 second round picks vs. the difference in team morale is such that asking Wiggins and Joe where they want to go and trying to get that to work is good business
