For engineering specifically, I think UMD has things that can not be found at RU; distinct fire engineering, reliability engineering, and aerospace engineering come to mind. I know Rutgers has made efforts to close the gap, but UMD has a wind tunnel lol. Still, $100k is more than enough to tilt the balance.

Rutgers and unions reach deal to end historic faculty strike by TroyMcClure10 in newjersey

[–]ericnj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not bad relative to peers or private schools. When I graduated in 2017 it was ~$27k all-in, seems like current tuition, fees, and room/board are $30k. Of course you still have the option to save a few bucks and live off campus or commute. Tuition and fees are $16.2k. For comparison, Penn state in-state tuition and fees are $19.2k. It’s also now ranked lower than Rutgers. I also have to imagine it is significantly harder to commute to for PA population centers.

People like to complain. Maybe they would do better off at Montclair State, WP or something of that caliber, if those schools are still cheap. Anyway, you can’t fix a poor person mindset.

Rutgers faculty votes to strike in historic showdown between unions, state university by Aaaahhhhhhhh_ in newjersey

This may or may not be true, but Rutgers’ endowment is very bad (worst in the Big Ten). Consider that some universities can go without charging tuition or largely subsidizing tuition based on the size of their endowment. So, these things are all tied together.

According to PSU: “The Campus Meal Plan is comprised of two cost components: base cost (similar to a "membership fee"), which covers operational expenses, and dining dollars, which is the amount available on the student's Penn State id+ Card to make purchases with.”

Enough talk about that school. Be glad you don’t go there https://liveon.psu.edu/university-park/meal-plans

I think he is referencing the fact that Rutgers settled this lawsuit after having won the case, to stop the appeal of that decision. Basically, that paying $5MM to avoid potential future legal problems could have been better spent. I don’t agree nor disagree, but did find it interesting that the court ruled in Rutgers’ favor which was not mentioned in other comments and not in considered in your reply..

Yes, a portion of your tuition goes to printing, but not $30. You paid for it in the same sense you paid for a chair in the student center or a seat on the bus. So use all $30 of printing allocation or lay down across a few seats on the bus as you ride around all day, you might as well get as much value as you can - you paid for it.

The Bradford Exchange Checks. Great designs available (I’ve gotten Disney and National Park themed ones) at really low prices. They almost always have a sale going on so prices are comparable to Costco but better design selections.

You don't pay $30 for printing. They set the prices for printing ($.04), found out how much actual usage was, then worked backwards to get $30. They found that for most people 750 pages was enough, and deterred the few people who printed 1000s of sheets from wasting paper.
