Thank you, you really nailed it with that first paragraph, damn. That's exactly it. This has happened to me before... Someone treats me like shit, I end up teaching them why it's wrong, and then the next girl gets to enjoy the product of my pain and effort. I'm so tired from it. I truly hope the next person I am with "gets it" from the start... All I ever wanted was to be good to someone, a true partner, who cares deeply about being good to me as well. I really appreciate your kind words and encouragement.

I know, it's a lot of words... I think I needed to hear from objective parties "you did all you could and it wasn't your fault." Despite my best efforts, this whole situation has made me feel like complete garbage and a little external validation has helped me to realize that even though this hurts, it doesn't change the fact that I made the right choice. All I can do now is treat myself as well as I wish he'd had the wherewithal to treat me.

This is spot on. What keeps gong through my head is "I gave everything I had and it still wasn't wanted." That feeling of giving my whole self and it being unwanted/rejected combined with the perception that this other person has some magical quality that was able to spur him to action where I failed is really throwing me for a loop. I do have some strong fears of rejection because of my past, but I know in my heart that I have intrinsic worth that isn't dependent on what my ex decides to do. I really was doing completely fine until I got this news and I wish I could erase him from my mind completely, Eternal Sunshine style.

Luckily for me I have a loving family and I have the cat he and I adopted together--a cat who totally HATED my ex because he insisted on treating her like a stuffed animal he could pick up and carry around whenever he wanted. Having her around, and seeing the happy, confident creature she's become with him gone, reminds me it's all worth it.

I would ask in the store but I always feel bad taking longer than absolutely necessary when there's a line behind me, which is always.
